Re Saab

As always there are far better judges on here but one thing we seem to be missing is the ability to get a set off to a great start

Garrick seems to get rag dolled around and Jorge, as strong as his runs can be, does not tend to get a quick play the ball going.

Yes it would be good to have some height out wide but i think it needs to be balanced against other needs

RE: Saab .... keep telling you numbnuts .... unless he can cover for Tom at fullback without our win % dropping off the scale, he is not what we desperately need .... A Johnson type player would have to be the 1st, 2nd and third priority

This is not a criticism of Saab ....

Tyfuna has proven he is an adequate fill-in fullback, and Hoppa Jnr was a specialist fullback in the junior teams.

Johnson staying at Souths.

Yes Saab has potential, lots of potential and would be a good pickup. He is young and has only played a few games for the Dragons but has not been able to get a spot ahead of Ravalawa and Pereira. He is tall and fast which are handy attributes for a winger but we have seen this year with the likes of Nofoaluma, Pereira, Thompson that you do not have to be tall to be a good winger; strength, smarts, speed off the mark, quick play the balls and good agility are very important.

Defensively he needs to improve, knowing when to come in or stay out on his man and trusting his inside man. Strength is another that needs to improve as he can get manhandled carting the ball up. Also he needs to play smarter - have seen a few ordinary decisions from him. But hopefully these things will all come from good coaching and regular exposure to first grade.
So no different to Garrick?? At least Garrick can kick goals!

You mark a more generous report card than me ... I won't be picky and say that Funa hasn't improved our win % ... but he certainly hasn't (as yet) shown an ability to chime into the back line and set up the outside backs, or seemed to have taken control of organising the defence ....

But Funa and Hoppa may ... repeat may be the answer, but on what they have shown so far I wouldn't be gambling our 2021 season on them at fullback if needed for a lengthy period ...

You are talking about a 'back-up fullback', and in a roster it is unlikely you'd have more than two specialist fullbacks. Tyfuna is a centre that has been doing quite well as a fullback. He's just learning the trade, and hopefully Turbo won't miss many matches next season.
I'd imagine Hoppa Jnr will be more likely to play as a fill-in fullback next season because that is the position he played in the juniors.

Yep ... all true ... but you're still hanging your hat on possibilities and potential. and I am not convinced on either .... would rather a proven back-up rather than someone who is adequate... and Hoppa hasn't shown me enough for me to want to gamble 2021 on him replicating his junior form in the 1st grade ...

In the modern game it has been shown that the fullback is now every bit as important as a good hooker or half back ... both in defence and try assists ... and any team that goes into the season with only one of either is headed for a world of pain ...

Given the ruckus over Hoppa's call up to first grade, would he be content with simply playing wing & acting as back up fullback for $250k when he's a specialist fullback?

I just have a feeling he's not only going to follow the money but will also go somewhere he can be a fulltime fullback.
