Api

In some ways it is but they made it to a Prelim Final this season and the lack of a more dynamic dummy half was not the reason for their loss.Korisau isn’t off contract til end of 2022 so Fainu’s situation should be sorted by then.
I feel I disagree. It wasn't the one reason we lost the preliminary and Croker has defended awesome all year.

To make it to the big dance, I feel we need a hooker who can occasionally get manly on the front foot with some x-factor, rather than depend on shovelling the ball to forwards all game, a hooked with some attacking prowess.

I don’t disagree the team needs a dynamic dummy half and my choice would be a fit and not under police observation Fainu, but Api or Manase would not have changed that particular result. The team is still yet to overcome adversity and seem to drop their bundle any time they drop the ball. This is what an experienced, hard nosed forward brings to the team, a la Watmough or Kennedy

Api's playing stocks have risen since he left Manly 2 years ago, and we couldn't afford him back then. On the flip side, his dickhead status has also gone to another level and the Panthers may prefer to cut him loose. But I agree he wouldn't be cheap so we can't afford him, which is probably for the best.

Why don’t you think he’d cost much?Given he’s an Origin player, two time premiership winner and the very fact the only reason he’d leave Penrith is finances
Penrith may decide to cut him loose, and without another club to pick him up, just sayin Nordburg. Maybe the Dolphins, but that might be it. And Bennet may have someone else in mind, Api could be forced to take a pay cut just to play on.

Why would Penrith decide to cut him loose?Only reason would be that he’s asking for too much money and given the Panthers have lost a few players plus cutting May,cap space wouldn’t be a problem. So if Penrith can’t afford him,no chance Manly have space, especially with Croker,Lawton,Cust and depending on his situation,Fainu,in the squad

Agree, basically my comment was Api could be a value pick up to another club, not just us.

Considering the lack of 9 options there is no way he would be a value pick up unless he signed for big money in 23 and the panthers decide to let him go early to an interim club

Seems to be a tricky matter sometimes when a player seeks an upgrade during their existing contract phase . Some times it seems to be done behind the scenes quitely with some type of mutual agreement. Pretty sure that A F B was upgraded by Manly during his [ previous] or then existing contract, possibly by quite a significant amount . Sure that there would be quite a few other instances as well with clubs responding accordingly if they think a player is worth it and warranted during their existing contract phase . Losing A F B still grates with me , Marty and Alioia on something like 1. 45 mil next season , and question marks if Manly can get full value from them on that type of money A F B had some issues but were surely on the minor scale and still wish he was in Manly colors and leading the charge . Hope that the prospect of Marty and Alioia stepping up next season is just not wishful thinking , have good expectations for Keppie and Paseka but losing A F B was a setback and will be until the remaining props can get to a consistent and good competitive level

AFB was our most intimidating and dominant forward by far

He was our consistent go forward man

His impact in the forwards was the impact that Tom is in our back line

Agree with the bulk of what you're saying MA, have you noticed when we lose players to other clubs, they don't play as well as before. Some get injuries, but mostly it's a drop of in form. Just a few off the top of my head,..T-rex, AFB, Whatmough, Terry Hill and Foran who is back to playing his best footy with us again. The only exception would be Clint Gutherson. No doubt you and other members on here can add to this list.

Guess in Gutho 's case , he played only very limited games for Manly . Can only remember some games on the wing and was chosen as a centre at the start of one season , then had a season ending injury . Could have been a capable 6 at Manly in hindsight but no doubt he does prefer full back . Manly generally seem to get good value out of most higher profile players who tend to have reasonably long careers there . Probably varies a little bit with players who have continued their careers away from Manly but more tending towards the end of their playing stints .Whare and API went well after leaving , will be interesting with Suli and not aware how many times the Dragons play Manly next season Only basing my outlook on AFB on the type of footy he was playing in his stint with Manly and just did not see a lot of him since leaving , lucky that he was unavailable on the two occasions that the Warriors played Manly last season .
