Fellow Sea Eagles,

What are your thoughts on Andrew Davey?. Personally I haven’t noticed much in attack but he seems a solid defender.

What do you think is his role in the team?.

NYEagle

No nonsense, solid defender, aggressive with and without the ball, he is one in our side who always does the so-called 1 percenters.
Has a little skill with the ball too.
I didn't notice much of him last week but it was his first go since an ACL so should get better.

Tough, gritty, high work rate player. Lacks the skilful upside of Guac and Shoe. Unless he can play bench middle or Schuster get moved elsewhere I think he misses out in a full strength lineup.

I think we need to give him a few more games before accessing him, I don't think he played lots of games with the squeels, mainly off the bench so he hasn't had much game time over the last 2 seasons.

Will be better for the run and won't let you down .. how he figures in the mix of a full squad available I don't know ..

I think his future will also depend on how Bullimore progresses.

Either way, with injuries he will get good game time and is certainly not a passenger.

Probably posted elsewhere, but he's got his own thread and his first try..!

So here it be posted:

Andrew Davey had every reason to smile after scoring his first NRL try.

And as he did, his team-mates reacted with plenty of hugs and back slaps.

For 30-year-old Davey had just crossed for Manly’s first try in their 30-6 win over the Newcastle Knights in heavy conditions at McDonald Jones Stadium on Thursday night.

However, this was more than just about opening the scoring in the round five premiership match.

It was a reward for perseverance.

........................................

As for Davey himself, he is now setting himself on a new fun challenge…trying to finish in front of skillful back-rower Haumole Olakau’atu on the tryscoring list this season.

“Last week (in Mudgee), Haumole gave me a bit of stick for being 1-0 up,’’ Davey laughed.

“We were 1-all for a little bit there but then ‘Shmole’ scored another one against the Knights, so I’m going to have to back it up next week.

“It’s a bit of fun between us. I might make it serious and put some money on it. And we will make it season long”.

Really like what he's added to our team on and off the field. Davey and Aloiai have added alot to our pack, both are proper hard nosed forwards who bring tough aggression both in defence and attack. In one of the previous interviews, Davey said he loves playing with aloiai because as footballers they are "cut from the same cloth". Both are a big reason we're on the front foot and our halves are thriving.

Andrew Davey is injecting steel into our pack. Honest toilers who runs and hits hard and just the sort of player you need to compliment the flair players in the side. He is going to play a big role for us this season. All he needs is a run of games to get totally match fit. He will be especially important around origin time!

I thought he was one of our best on Thursday. He and Aloe Vera have added a bit of starch to the pack. Solid defence and does the hard work bending the line. When Shoe is back I think he can transition into the middle without a problem.

It will take 21 players to participate and play a role
Each one will be important at some time during the season

Squads with this in mind are stronger by knowing that they might drift in and out during the year

Des is quite good of ensuring the players know this and regularly talks about the game it self - the manly warringah club - the team and what we all have to do as individuals to succeed

Not rocket science but he does it monotonously

Not all get it and have individual goals stronger than team goals but eventually they move on

Davey and Bullemore will both play important roles

Back to the question

I think Andrew is tough and determined and feel confident with him next to me when defending a lead or running hard for metres

Davey's try scoring duel with Haumole is rather interesting. Putting money on it? And talking all season-long? When you've only just made it back in the team, and ostensibly keeping the spot warm for last year's star incumbent ...

Makes me wonder if Des has given Davey a quiet word about his role for this season - left second row is now his spot to lose, maybe? In which case Des also must have something quite specific in mind for Schuster.

Ah probably just random musings, reading too much into it. (There's always far more to talk about after a loss than a win!!) :)

if davey gets dropped or benched we are a weaker team. he is a specialist back rower in that he has size, mobility, grunt in everything he does. not overly damaging with the ball yet, but i reckon that will come because he will find more gaps and half breaks as this season goes on because he challenges his opposition every play

i hope he gets an extension even with tuilagi coming across.

Love this thread... as a Davey supporter because from my own career I just love players who don't have skills or speed oozing out of every pore of their body and have to rely on toughness, heart and fitness to get through. Jake is very very similar - bit more talented in that he can ball play but he is again all heart and toughness. I have said it adnauseam, Davey needs to be in this side as a starting forward every week. He brings consistency - consistency of effort and of no errors in attack or defence. His effort and I gather his story lift the side especially given the other forwards who are way more talented see this country guy with limited talents giving his all every minute of every play. He brings balance to the pack and in every successful side - a balanced pack is essential.
