AFB shots fired!

Suggestion .... If your culture is that sensitive .. that someone having a joke about pronouncing your name horrifies your deceased ancestors and provokes outraged anger in you .....perhaps you would be better off staying on your island and not interacting with other cultures ... because most of the world loves to take the piss and have a laugh ... even at themselves ....

I am of European decent and I listened to a replay what EM said and I consider it absolutely disrespectful and unacceptable. An apology is insufficient she should be banned. I can understand the outrage. That's something I would have heard int he 60's and we have moved away from that rubbish a long long time ago.

Big difference between private and public expressions of insensitivity and disrespect .and Molan should have been well aware of this reality . A F B does wear his heart on his sleeve with his strong on field efforts and seems to sometimes unhelpfully reflect this mindset with some off field reactions but he was not the one who instigated the controversy in this instance . Molan ,s mentality is not that much different from some bogan shockjocks with their sense of self righteousness and entitlement to belittle others for whatever questionable motivation .

I know I am going to regret this but...Really?

I suspect you haven't heard what was said and how it was said. It was a shocker and it wasn't an attempt to pronounce any particular name it was mockery - twice. I'm not a pacific islander but it cut me to the quick. I didn't expect that in 2020 I'd be reading on this site the suggestion that somebody should have stayed in their own country because they can't tolerate somebody making fun of their names. The people that take the piss and laugh in these circumstances are IMO bigots. I put up with that sort of **** most of my childhood and it was not funny for me!

Yes seriously ... i also grew up with people mocking my accent and saying I was from a race of people that wore skirts and were tight fisted ..... my poor Highland warrior ancesters rolling in their graves at their proud Clan kILT BEING CALLED A WOMAN'S SKIRT .

fair dinkum people need to get over themselves ....

And yes ... if people having a joke about pronouncing your name enrages you .... then you probably shouldn't mix with other people ...

@Woodsie, Dont forget its all somewhat generational.
It doesnt take much to hurt feelings these days .
Back in the day ,one's sibling dying an undeserved death generates as much anger ,pain and suffering as today asking a milleniall "is that bloke gay"

Just because we used to do something does not make it right.

It is lazy and disrespectful (which is similar to someone saying I do not find "x" offensive which means it must not be offensive)

I had heard every Irish joke by the end of kindergarten!

Why don't we have a commentator of Pasifika origin?
NB: What is this made up word 'Pasifika'? What does it stand for? Pacificisland.....
Are we being racially insensitive using descriptors such as 'Polynesian', 'Islander' ?
I need to know before I end up being called a racist when really I'm just ignorant.
Graham Connors has a song “ Pacifica “ which goes back to the original pacific island workers who were brought into Queensland as cane cutters ( terrible job and no Aussies would do it).

It’s a great song and tells the story , someone smarter than me @Moondog could find that song and insert it in and you could listen to the story.

I think they were originally called Kannaka’s ( spelling is probably wrong).

If everyone promises to behave can you agree not to play us the song?

Coincidence that you mention that ... I had the conversation with two of my Indian mates this morning and they said that the 12th man was compulsory listening .. they used to get a laugh out of it ..

One of the funniest things I have ever heard is Robin Williams putting on a pissed Scottish accent and bagging golf and Scotsmen ...

Whole world is getting too precious ..
Anything from Robin Williams mouth was funny. Such a loss.

Not having a go at you Mark and a bit off topic with this current discussion but in regard to the historical context and knackers and cane cutting , that is not quite how it occurred Most northern pacific islanders were bought to the cane fields against their will [ black birding ] and just for pure profit and exploitation [ essentially slavery ] When it was outlawed in the 1920 's quite a few islanders returned to their home islands but quite a few stayed as well . Also before but mainly after that time, many thousands of overseas immigrants [ from all parts of Europe and even the U k and even some Australian born men were engaged in hand cane cutting until mechanical harvesting in the mid 60 's early 70 's , Had to be very well paid to do it but that was the deal . No doubt quite a bit of underlying and even overt bigotry and maybe racist inclined attitude to islanders back then , would have to think that it has improved markedly since then but still elements of it existing in contemporary times if Molan's example is any indication .

Yes I certainly wasn’t condoning the actions but as I said I think the song talks about the name and how if all started , YouTube it and have a goodlisten , Graham does a good job of telling the story
