2019 State of Origin Chat. DECIDER!

Wighton to the centre's ahead of Mitchell......remembering that the last time Wighton actually started any game in the centres was for Country Origin....in 2016.

Three back rowers on the bench.....

A rookie prop in what could be a series deciding game.....

Did Freddie, Buderus and Johns go on a Saturday night bender before picking their team?

In all honesty, this is the NSW team I would have chosen given who's available and who isn't:

James Tedesco
Josh Addo-Carr
Latrell Mitchell
Josh Morris
Tom Trbojevic
James Maloney
Nathan Cleary
Reagan Campbell-Gillard
Damien Cook
Paul Vaughan
Boyd Cordner
Tyson Frizell
Jake Trbojevic

Jack Wighton
Dale Finucane
Cameron Murray
Tariq Sims

This looks like a much better team. Let's hope we are wrong! A lesson for Blues players is to learn the words to the National Anthem!

I’ll be in Winton for the SOO, no not chasing fish ( too ****ing dry up here) chasing Dinosaurs ( or at least their remains) instead.

I’ll be wearing my Blues gear into enemy territory, hope I get out alive!!

There is only one good thing about Winton (even if you mean the town in Qld and not the one in Victoria).....and that is a 3 KM piece of road known as Winton Motor Raceway @;)

I've heard a lot of people (not Manly fans) complaining that Tom isn't a centre. And that's true, he's a fullback. But, what a lot don't seem to realise is that Tom is like a modern day version Dale Shearer or Andrew Ettingshausen. A player who can play just about anywhere in the backline and make it look relatively easy.

Would NSW have been better off having two specialist centres such as Morris or Mitchell or Roberts or even Dylan Walker? If a player like Turbo is talented enough, it really wouldn't make any difference.

I mean, personally I would have left Morris in the side (given't that Mitchell probably wouldn't have been selected anyway) and had Turbo on the wing instead of Ferguson. But that is only because Tom's running game is probably better used on the wing where he can be roving like he did last year whereas in the centres he is generally restricted to one side of the field. But otherwise I see no problems with him at centre for NSW or even Australia. Sure I personally would prefer him to be the fullback, but since they have Tedesco there that won't happen until Teddy either retires or is injured, so it is what it is.

Elite players such as Turbo (& Wighton?) should be able to adept well to various positions. Tim Brasher began his career as centre & evolved into one of NSW's best ever SOO fullbacks. Graeme Langlands, played equally as well at fullback or centre. Initially, both Ken Thornett & Les Johns were ahead of him for fullback position.

It is likely Freddy's thinking was that Turbo, if available, would have been selected as centre in Game One, meaning Morris was only ever filling in for him. Thus, Ferguson is a replacement for the injured Cotric with Mitchell being the only three quarter dropped. I rewatched Game One - it is noticeable that Mitchell's attitude was lackadaisical for a SOO game. In comparison, Wighton in his limited minutes tried his best (including
one very bad error, of course).

BREAKING: Origin bombshell. Qld utility Moses Mbye has almost died after going into anaphylactic shock at the team hotel. Maroons doc Matt Hislop saved his life. Mbye had minutes to live. Incredibly he will play in Origin II. @cmail_sport
FFS. Cant we have just one series without these yokels having to drag somone from their deathbed , out of hospital, playing with life threating injury or serious illness. They must think we care or something.

Tim Brasher began his career as centre & evolved into one of NSW's best ever SOO fullbacks.

IIRC, Brasher only started his first grade career in the centre's because Warren Ryan wanted him in the team somewhere, but already had a well established fullback in Garry Jack while he had James Grant and Steve O'Brien on the wings. Centre was the only spot in the backline where Balmain had an opening. And it wasn't until Jack left the club at the end of 1992 that Brasher actually got the chance to play fullback for the Tigers (he actually spent 1992 on the wing). Brasher actually played most of his junior career as a fullback and was even named in the #1 in the Australian Schoolboys Team of the Century in the 2008 celebrations.

A lot of people think that Tim Brasher was a centre who got moved to fullback, but the reality is that he was a fullback who got moved to the centre's because there were already established players at fullback when he started (Jack for Balmain and NSW, Ettingshausen for NSW). It literally took him 4 years to actually play his junior position in the seniors full time.

In representative football, Tom will be the same, of sorts. He's a fullback who out of necessity will play in the three-quarters. The thing is that Tedesco, as good as he is, is a fullback specialist. He's not a winger and he's not a centre. Turbo can play all 3 and make it look easy and he's one of those players who is simply too good to leave out of the side just because they can't play him in his usual club position.

Im concerned with Wightons defencive reads. I watched him come through Raiders as a centre and was poor in his defencive reads. Its why Stewart moved him to 5.8 then fullback and back to 5.8. He has all the talent but it seems he doesn't really have a natural position. Here's hoping he's done alot of work with his defence.

Thank you for this info. I remember his entry into first grade in 1989 as a centre & had assumed that was his original position. The players in the Australian Schoolboys Team of the Century would match any Australian team from any era

1. Tim Brasher (Grantham High, NSWCHS)
2. Andrew Ettinghausen (De La Salle Cronulla, NSWCCC)
3. Mark Gasnier (Peakhurst High, NSWCHS)
4. Justin Hodges (Cairns State High, QSSRL)
5. Greg Inglis (Wavell State High, QSSRL)
6. Brad Fittler (McCarthy Senior High, NSWCCC)
7. Greg Alexander (Patrician Brothers' Fairfield, NSWCCC)
8. Craig Young (Corrimal High School)
9. Danny Buderus (St Francis Xavier Newcastle, NSWCCC)
10. Les Boyd (Nyngan High School)
11. Steve Menzies (Narrabeen High, NSWCHS)
12. Paul Sironen (Holy Cross Ryde, NSWCCC)
13. Brad Clyde (Hawker College, ACT)

I have a feeling Freddy picked his best available 17 to win Game Two, without worrying too much about positions

You have to wonder how good that team is if ET and 1nglis are pushed out to the wings. Although personally I would have them as my centre's over Gasnier and Hodges any day.

Here's my take...

I think Latrell has had an indiscretion in camp to the extent that Freddy would jeopardise their chances by dropping him rather than pick him. Any alternative is dumbfounding to me as Wighton was even worse than Latrell in game one.

Walker should be paired with Maloney, as Cleary is just not representative level. The Chad is worth considering. Waddell would be a better selection than Saifiti.

Tom will be excellent in the centres, as he will anywhere in the backline.

You going to Lark Quarry? Only about 100k's outside of Winton and it has the dinosaur footprints! Apparently that is what inspired Spielberg's dino stampede in the first Jurassic park movie.

Don't eat the coprolite!

Go the Blues.

Yep out to Lark Quarry tomorrow, Age of Dinosaurs museum on the way in, now set up behind the Tatts Hotel and enjoying a Schoey and a pie for lunch.

Preparing to venture into enemy territory about 5.30pm.

Jake to start at prop, Finucane to start at lock, Vaughan to bench Triple M saying.

Go Maroons
