When I look across the park at the team we now have, I see a great team in development.
Defensive issues have been cited in the backline especially aimed at young Kelly. Too many mistakes are being made by Tom T.. The wingers have dropsy. Walker is inconsistent and gets emotionally affected. Green is getting older. DCE needs a ball playing 5/8. Yet this backline, despite the limitations of some of our forward power and consistency, has been one of, if not the most potent attacking backlines in the competition. The Bronks, the Storm have hot backlines but the Storm are there because of their forward power. The backline we have is potentially outstanding. The problems mentioned regarding the full back and centres will be rectified. They are young and developing. Uate and Taufua when on song are devastating, but they need catching practice over and over again. We have two young outstanding backline stars in Tom Wright and Jade Anderson who could cover brilliantly on the wings and full back. Parker could be our next Brown, only more effective covering backline and forwards. We have one of the best two or three halves in the game. Only 5/8 needs to be looked at for the long term, but for now he is an ideal link.
The forwards have a couple of test rating players in Jake T, Taupau, Api. There are two rising stars in Sironen and AFB and Perrett may join those two in time. Winterstein is a solid worker. Sipley and one or two rising juniors may strengthen our stocks. The basic structure is there. Just needs enhancing. When this team was on the boil this year, they could beat anyone.
All we really need is a couple of talented established forward stars and this team will be ready to make a move for the premiership. Top 4 next year if we hold onto our backline and add a bit more starch to the forwards. We dont have to cull much at all. Just get some good extra forward power and quality backups in reserves for those obvious injury periods that affect every team. Cullen, Hastings and the other Wright add to our depth. And who knows. Young Jamil Hopoate may have finally done his home work and earn a look at first grade as a backup finally...we can only hope there.
