Why not Tooves?

Just a Reminder for those that have short memories ...

Geoff Toovey sacked: Manly coach’s winning record ranks among best of post-Super League era

“THE results speak for themselves over the last four years.”

With a grand final appearance, two more finals runs, a 2015 campaign that still isn’t dead in the water and a winning percentage of 57.6 per cent, the results weren’t enough to save Geoff Toovey from the Manly chopping block this week.

But they are enough to put his record among the best of coaches to be given the punt in the NRL era.

According to the FoxSports Lab, since 1998 only six coaches have better winning records at a club they’ve since departed than Toovey does holding the maroon and white clipboard — Wayne Bennett at the Broncos and Dragons (65.2 per cent and 64.6 per cent respectively), Jason Taylor at Parramatta (62.5 per cent), Jim Dymock at the Bulldogs (62.5 per cent), Ricky Stuart at the Roosters (60 per cent), Chris Anderson at Melbourne (59.6 per cent) and his predecessor Des Hasler at the Sea Eagles (59.2 per cent).

Except, the fact Jason Taylor and Jim Dymock rate higher than Tooves sort of undercuts the value of this stat!
There is no comparison to the aura that Toovey would bring in the coaching sheds in comparison to seibold
Just the Toovey aura alone would be uplifting and Inspirational
Or...why not save money by not hiring a head coach at all?
Just have a statue of Bozo or Tooves on display for the players to see each day, and the aura will inspire the players to great premiership winning heights. Might just work.

As i said - i am not advocating that he is the best coach.

Just annoys me that other people with no experience get pushed forward because of their media profile

SOO is NOT about being a tactical coach. It is about (or SHOULD be about) fire and brimstone, passion, togetherness etc.

Thats the essence of the competition that makes it so good. The BEST players going hammer and tonge with passion etc

I like Tooves for the background, the fire up etc

You make an interesting point about fire and brimstone. I guess coaches like Cleary, or Bennett, or even Slater, might employ that method, but it's hard to imagine, somehow.
I suspect cold calculations are more important at the higher levels. Could be totally wrong though. And I agree Tooves would be a great person to have around Origin camp, if he wanted such a role.

I saw Twents name pop up, he's either got friends in not quite high enough places or grainy photos that are not quite clear enough.

We all love him because of who he is and what he stands for
I would like to see him get another opportunity
He deserves the benefit of the doubt
How many roles have been up since 2015? Including ours

Also there is something to be said about someone who has not coached and stayed up to date with what is going on (basically being "coach fit")

My strong point is
If Seibold can get another coaching opportunity after the Broncos one and only Mediocre Wooden spoon effort
Toovey should get another opportunity as well
But life is not always fair
We all know that

A stone cold lifeless statue of a person and the status and the aura of the character in a coach are two different things feathered friend
A Characters status and aura is one of the inspirational elements that can make an impact interacting with the playing group .

Doesn't have to be cold and lifeless. You could paint it in lifelike colours.
A statue of Kevvie could possibly have made the difference for the Broncs last year?
Especially if you use AI. Must be possible now to make one that is more inspiring than the original?
Like, which of these guys looks more inspiring? I'd say not the real one.

Met Toovey once, was a complete flog. Who knows, maybe it was a bad day, but I've carried that with me for 20+ yrs. Just because he could play footy doesn't mean he can coach, manage people.

What defines Tooveys coaching career for me is his ability to get Manly playing finals footy and nearly Winning the Grand final in 2013 . Manly were super competitive and led that Grand final until the last dying minutes but ti was not to be

The main reason his coaching career ended at Manly was because he was not politically correct and wore his passionate heart on his sleeve as always and was politically assassinated for not backing the Penn faction .

State of origin is all about the passion and resilience and the coach that inspires these winning qualities in his players come up trumps
Toovey has these qualities in spades and he would be my pick for NSW head coach
You call it political correctness, I call it lacking class and nous. In saying that I would not say Geoff Toovey has no class or nous.

As a former member for the NRMA board of directors he really had a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Even though he spoke primarily articulately for the vast majority of the time, his bad 'takes' and timing were so bad it was almost comedic.

Love ya Tooves.

You make a very interesting point.

A feeling he inherited the team by some also

I understand what you are saying however the time out of the game is just something that he will struggle to overcome

It is not as if Tovey has been vanished to Siberia and has lost track of how the game has evolved
He has been a Media analyst until present

Thank you for your opinion but your opinion does not define the type of flog that Toovey is who can not manage people

What defines Toovey is that he has proven to have managed the Manly players to play in grand final and finals footy .

This is what defines Toovey .

The point that The 47s made was that Toovety the Flog could not manage people
People that can not manage people can not manage to take them into a Grand final
It does not matter what players a coach has
He still has to manage them

Yes I agree that Toovey is Primarily Articulate for the vast Majority of the time and it is our actions for the Majority of our time that shapes our Character

I am sure that this does not define Seibold for the majority of the time
Being found out cold sleeping in venues
We all have bad takes that is almost comedic

Toovey was all class when they had the press conference to announce his sacking.

Even shook Scott Penn’s and Peters’ hands, after they had shafted him.

It was what it was
and It is what it is
No ego is bigger than our Legendary club
If we love our club we put our club first and not let past issues destabilize its future
We all shake hands and move on
And Toovey will always Remain a Manly Premiership winning Legend and a Manly finals and Grand final coach
