Alan Thompson mainly played 5/8. Very clever ball player and solid. Maybe 2nd or third to Cliffy's No 1 5/8. Gibbs, like Phil Blake was spectacular. Made tries out of nothing and in attack those two stand out. But they didn't have the overall game of DCE who is very good in attack and defence, and usually an excellent kicker. Not the best at guiding the team around the park but that's why we need someone like Schuster in the 5/8 spot who just creates things at will.

Its a hard call given the rules have changed so much over the years. Interchange rather than 4 reserves, introduction of the 10m over the 5m, 3 point tries have become 4 point quads, 40-20, scrums are not being contested where before a good half and hooker combination was important for possession.
That said, any Manly player with a 6 or 7 on their back (with the exception of a few like Field etc) all did their part.
Lets not forget Ox and Killer in the 2008 Record Breaking Grand Final against an illegally fielded Drizzle side

@The '47ers , So many things to do to keep you up on night shift . A suggestion is to take you lap top at work and you can you tube Manly games , Movies , get on the Silvertails etc . The best thing that keeps me up is watching porn all night . Other things are reading books , cross word puzzles , What ever your into .

Yeah, that 1997 grand final. I watched it again a few months ago and the first thing that came to my mind - Why was it only John Hopoate that showed any kind of aggression towards the jacked-up thugs? A lone hand all game... a winger!! Where were our big, tough forwards when we were getting bashed and stomped? McDougall and Harragon should have had their heads taken off. I must admit, I gained a whole new respect for Hoppa after watching it. If Manly had six hoppas out there from 8-13 we win that grand final in a canter.

good to see Hoppa is given credit for his ability as a player, not the **** AFTER he left Manly....thank you.!!
