What side would Des select.....?

In regards to Jake/Marty swapping it is more of a way to change the use of the bench and its' structure and impact.Marty plays 20-25 minutes and interchanges with Tanginoa and then later back in the second half swap again.Jake can play 60 at prop and switch out with Sipley.AFB and Paseka switch at 20 minute mark and again in the second half.If Jake plays lock,I think he ends up playing the full 80 and for me I am not a great fan of his ball playing ability. Most of his ball playing ability seems to be more like a link just passing it out the back to the backline, would rather just see him mucking it out doing the grunt work, and can still offload if it warrants it.I also would prefer to see him not play the full 80(just my opinion)

I dont see how changing the numbers on Jake and Martys backs changes the way they play....they are both middle forwards

I dont think Des will make wholesale changes

Elgey and DCE in the halves

Api at Hooker

And I think Taufua will get first shot under Hasler

Personnel wise, Des probably won't make wholesale changes in the first year because we're hamstrung by the salary cap penalty. But he'll definitely make wholesale changes to the way we play. Whether that's for the better remains to be seen, though past history suggests it will be for the better.

LG and DCE should be the halves and Api the hooker. As to who gets the bench utility role (if he uses one), that's down to Fainu and Hodko. Trent's goal kicking might give him an edge considering that we still lack a top kicker. DCE did OK this year, but still iffy at times.

I do agree that Jorge will probably get first shot on the wing, but I'm not convinced Des will definitely go that way. Other than his early tackle hit ups, lets face it.....as a winger Jorge is more a liability than an asset these days. And I am also not convinced that Suli and Parker are the type of players that Des likes and I think they'll end up spending most of their time at Blacktown.

Good post @Smokin Joe just 2 comments .... I think that Jake's ball playing role may be expanded and I think this will work off the back of Kapow hit-ups better than the other way around .... stay at lock for mine ...

..also with Fainu as hooker you face the same problem Baz had last year .... until he becomes a proven 80 min player you may need to have coverage on the bench ...
Yeah,I have my views on who I would select, just putting it out there as to Des' past and how he seems to like structuring his side and what he might do,he played Klemmer at 13 and for me was not enough of an athlete to be there,Marty has the athletic ability and I like the way it potentially gives our bench more impact. If Jake plays 80 it means you might need to have a second rower doing more hit ups(Thompson) and then interchange with a hard running second rower(this means more disruption to the defensive line on the edge replaced as you have someone different defending there),otherwise we just have 2 hard running middle men on the bench and the bench seems a bit useless to me having an edge guy who makes little impact coming on for no reason. For me,I would not like to bank on Sironen as a full year option and having him on the bench means he can play edge backrow,5/8 if injuries occur and play hooker in a pinch. For me I would play Api,but I don't know if either Api or Fainu fit his view of a dummy half(Ballin with us,Lichaa as a defender, passer at Dogs and Woolford/Garvey were his backups and both similar to Ballin as players).Just throwing it out there, but maybe the favourite whipping boy Lewis Brown might get a new offer to stay hahahahahahahah(jokes, just jokes,us Lions love jokes)I don't recall Des liking to have a dummy half on the bench, from memory he likes his number 9 to play the full 80 and have 4 forwards on the bench and roll the dice as to injuries in a game. For me there are some cheap options out there who might be interesting to him if possible(Jamil/Zac Woolford/Craig Garvey/Eastwood/Luke Yates/Milne/Frawley),not saying I would sign them but we still have some room and space....

Pretty good side - I noted the sneaky addition of Buhrer....really liked him a few years back but if Des can snare a Mariner type impact would be sweet

Hodkinson isn't first grade standard anymore. The key areas which used to be his biggest strengths ie defence, kicking, passing are now some of the worst in the league.

Heard Gutherson is being shopped around and Buhrer could be cheap.

Just because they were originally at manly does not mean they are good buys. I hate this line of thought that we must get anyone who has been here back again. Buhrer and gutho have at least 6 knee reco's between them and buhrer has lost all agility and gutho is a victim of his own versatility and still hasn't cemented 1 position in first grade

No to these too.

Fair enough. Was just thinking Brhrer and Gutherson give 100% effort every game and may bring back some of the old Manly spirit we love.

Its Taufua, Perrett and Elgy I don't see making the grade under Des. There will be in and outs yet. This is not what I think will be the team. It's the type of player DES likes in those spots balancing experience and youth starting and on the bench.

He has a very bright future at Manly. we have talked about him several times. A big yes from me.

Good to know, just strange to see everyone have him in their sides without even hearing of him myself. Looks the goods visually, could be a workhorse strong guy.

I’m not a racist person, barely at all, and nor do I intend to be by this, although why are we beginning to look like the New Zealand Sea Eagles. Let’s develop some of our own players rather then bring them from NZ or the West. Amone may in fact be a local, although there’s no way that all our juniors/current players which are majority islander, being locally developed. That’s something that’s gone wrong since the club started going downhill, their care of locals.

Hopefully if Tooves does get that junior assistant or whatever role he brings the manly back to manly in that department as well. Sometimes buying the biggest and strongest isn’t as good as developing quality playing fans into players. They will stay loyal, and they will know the basics of manly

Croker in front of Api??????? really???

* Love to throw Anderson on the wing if true he is like Josh Ado-Carr.

* Probably prefer Garrick on the other wing.

* Taufua, Kelly, Parker are wingers / centres of yesteryear. They don't have a place in today's game anymore. You'll note EVERY top 6 team has explosive fast wingers.

* Aside from that, the only other two points of contention are our 14, and 17. I'd say Fainu for the 14, but have been extremely disappointed in his partying offseason mentality with Suli.

* Probably Corey Waddell for the 17 right now, with Perrett, Sipley, Amone, Gosweiski, Winterstein as backup.

* Starting speedsters on the wing, you can still fall back to those.other wingers I noted.

* Consider Suli for the forwards I guess. My assumption is he's going to come back to the team very, very unfit, and unhealthy. In Manase's live feed on Insta, the poor guy could hardly talk he was so out of it, which is every 19 year olds perogative I guess.
Let’s see what Donny can do for young suli. He might have a break out year

Has Siro been officially re signed yet ? Guess that the complexion of the forward line up will be dependent on him being part of the mix and should still have plenty to offer with his effective line running and his mobility if he is is injury free and on his game . Jake to me [ and as one of the most durable players in the N R L ,] best contribution is to be on the paddock as long as possible and can not see any real gain with a prop option role for him . Pretty sure that Marty played most of his pre Manly days in the back row and of the bench but his lateral defence continues to be an issue and his go forward and off loads as a prop really put Manly on the front foot when he just focuses on more direct running . Just do not seem to have the prop depth at present to warrant him being used as a back rower . Tanga seems much more damaging as a back rower also and not just slogging it up the middle , that is where Pasaka and hopefully Sipley can step up quite a bit as good impact rotation props . Fainu " s present tackling technique is to go a little higher to wrap up the ball and unavoidable for him then to concede some meters , where A P I tends to have that high work rate , lower tackling style which reduces meters gained . Both have that element of versatility and can be a natural bench combination and no reason why their dummy half service can not improve . Now with Lane gone , need the best possible defensive type forwards spending most time on the field and again that should definitely include Jake .
