What side would Des select.....?

Smokin Joe

Bencher
I have been a fan of Barrett(no time or interest in debating that, but poor decision making etc... blah/blah have changed that). However,I support the coach of the Sea Eagles until confirmed that they have left for whatever reasons.....(Des has my unquestioned support,as all have since Cranky Franky)One thing that has interested me since hearing that the King might be returning is how he might be structuring the team.A couple of things that people have been discussing is who might be out of favour...for me it might be more interesting about who he could be favouring and how people might feel about those guys...I get the feeling that he might be looking at Jake as a prop(loves long minutes at prop like Tolman) and moving Marty to lock and this has a dramatic impact on how he structures and uses the bench. He is a big fan of Hodko(brought him to Manly and Bulldogs and only lost him to a big contract to Knights) and could be looking at him at 7 with DCE at 6.Probs doesn't like big lazy wingers eg Jorge/Suli and might like guys more like Garrick/Elliot/Funa(who resemble Robo/Wolfman).Doesn't seem to like creative/independant hookers (might be looking at Fainu at 9,but Lichaa was like that a few years ago and has been stunted(his career)since.Hope he doesn't look to promote a centre like Stanley to 5/8 at anytime in the future as we all know how Silvertails like those those sort of dud decisions......For me at this early times and if he is is named coach...the team might be...
1.Turbo
2.Garrick
3.Kelly
4.Walker
5.Elliott
6.Evans
7Hodkinson
8.AFB
9.Fainu
10.Trbojevic
11.Thompson
12.Amone
13.Taupau
14.Tanginoa
15.Sironen
16.Sipley
17.Paseka

What are peoples feelings on ow Des might structure the side?Remembering Klemmer was a 13 at Dogs...

I think most of the starting 13 is pretty much a given bar the wings. And 5/8 depending on if the coach thinks Life's Good or it needs some Hodko.

Personally.....

FB - T. Trbojevic
WG - TBC
CE - Walker
CE - Kelly
WG - TBC
FE - Elgey
HB - Cherry-Evans (c)
PR - Fonua-Blake
HK - Koroisau
PR - Taupau
SR - Sironen
SR - Thompson
LK - J. Trbojevic

BE - Hodkinson
BE - Paseka
BE - Tanginoa
BE - Sipley

Not a lot of personnel changes due to the salary cap (getting new players may change). And I'm still not fully convinced that the new coach will see Jorge and Suli as certainties for the flanks.

No worrries,bt depending on who is prop or lock is massive,so .............................................that is point of post,.........................................................................................

Maybe another forward signing could change the dynamics yet ??
I reckon Jake is a top lock forward, but his ball playing under Des will have him at prop....though we did have a ball playing lock in Stewart successfully last time Des ran the show.
Really think API is a certainty at 9, with the talented Fainu a good show for a bench spot to light up some flair late in halves.
Can see new wingers in 2019 outside Kelly and Walker....Garrick, Elliott or Anderson, but feel Des will give Taufua a chance to regain form - love this bloke but looked busted and out of date in 2018.
Elgey will get first shot at 5/8 and his fate will be in his own hands.

Des loves his big blokes so let's see how that pans out.
Still interested in what part of Baz's coaching you're a fan of though...

What do you see as the main differences between lock and prop if they are both middle forwards ?? Is it just minutes played ?? or is it workrate on hitups ?? Defensively I imagine there would be no difference. I'm interested if there is a subtle difference between those two spots.

Prozhenko suggesting in today’s paper that Barrett will be kept on in some capacity until his contract runs out.

Presumably they hope that under Des he will tire quickly of the whole mess and depart early.

Good post @Smokin Joe just 2 comments .... I think that Jake's ball playing role may be expanded and I think this will work off the back of Kapow hit-ups better than the other way around .... stay at lock for mine ...

..also with Fainu as hooker you face the same problem Baz had last year .... until he becomes a proven 80 min player you may need to have coverage on the bench ...

* Love to throw Anderson on the wing if true he is like Josh Ado-Carr.

* Probably prefer Garrick on the other wing.

* Taufua, Kelly, Parker are wingers / centres of yesteryear. They don't have a place in today's game anymore. You'll note EVERY top 6 team has explosive fast wingers.

* Aside from that, the only other two points of contention are our 14, and 17. I'd say Fainu for the 14, but have been extremely disappointed in his partying offseason mentality with Suli.

* Probably Corey Waddell for the 17 right now, with Perrett, Sipley, Amone, Gosweiski, Winterstein as backup.

* Starting speedsters on the wing, you can still fall back to those.other wingers I noted.

* Consider Suli for the forwards I guess. My assumption is he's going to come back to the team very, very unfit, and unhealthy. In Manase's live feed on Insta, the poor guy could hardly talk he was so out of it, which is every 19 year olds perogative I guess.

I understand what you are saying in relation to Jake playing prop Smokin.

Theory Being it allows us to break up the impact of losing Taupau and blake at the same time to the bench?

I think it’s a bit self defeating though as it simply requires Marty to play longer minutes and jake would probably move back to lock while he is off anyway.

It just complicates our side unnecessarily just leave Jake at lock where he is one of the most influential players in the game.

I agree in regards to hodkinson. I don’t think he was really ever given an opportunity by the rookie to play that Blake Green role and steer the side around.

I think this is what Desmond will run with

Tom Trbojevic
Reuben Garrick
Moses Suli
Dylan Walker
Brian Kelly
DCE
Hodko
AFB
Api
Marty
Thommo
Siro
Jake

Tanga
Amone
Paseka
Waddell

I dont see how changing the numbers on Jake and Martys backs changes the way they play....they are both middle forwards

I dont think Des will make wholesale changes

Elgey and DCE in the halves

Api at Hooker

And I think Taufua will get first shot under Hasler

Hodgkinson’s knees are shot. Let go by Dogs, Newcastle and Sharks for a reason. Bloody good bloke but body has had enough. We really need Elgey to be a success.

Don’t share the love for Hasler. Left us in really bad shape, left the Dogs in bad shape - and he is the messiah? Game plan usually stodgy and boring and devoid of innovation. He is likely to play Hodko for these reasons.

Your props are usually stationed on either side of the ruck (left/right) and as a ball player, will usually be first receiver, or pounding it up in tight....also defend the middle.
The lock will often take the ball wider at the edges and though there is a favoured side like Gift had, will also roam around with the ability to attack both sides of the ruck.
The lock will usually be close to if not the best defender in the team.....old school they had great cover defence, but not as prominent in the modern game due to the dance/wrestle stopping the flow.

Des has always seen the importance in quality wingers who are safe. Hopoate, Robertson, Hicks, Wolfman (before he lost it), Corey Thompson, Sam Perrett, Curtis Rona. Not necessarily flashy, but all very safe.
Compared to the dross we have put up with over the last 4-5 years from our wingers - Williame, Parker, Uate (apart from a few months in 2017, Taufua (who has never been safe under the high ball).

Don't really see an issue with doing this i the off season. Cliffy had a dart at halftime!
Anyway, i am very comfortable that between Donny and Des our fitness won't be an issue come game one of 2019.
Yeah cliffy crossed my mind, but I doubt he could cram 200 smokes into an hour.

It must take a huge toll on lungs.
