Announcement Upcoming Server Move

  • We had an issue with background services between march 10th and 15th or there about. This meant the payment services were not linking to automatic upgrades. Much slower for me.
are you located in Australia?
Realistically page load times should be identical if not faster because of location and latency. We run a CDN which means most of the content loads from the closest point to you and is heavily cached. The only things that may be marginally slower but not noticeable to the human eye, would be how long it takes for data to get in and out of the database, but agains that is unlikely to be noticable.

Is that more anecdotal that it's slower based on perception or is it taking many seconds to load?

it takes about 1.2 seconds for content to load and full page load on the front page takes about 3.17 seconds based on a US location. So if it is noticeably and significantly slower for you I would like to understand that better and try to troubleshoot with/for you

Hi All,

it's that time again, time for us to move servers. I was able to salvage a bunch of diskspace but with that said we still are running on fumes in terms of diskspace and whilst resizing is an option we also have the option of moving to a new server with a bit more space and grunt.

I have run all the tests and we are able to do that and I have a sample running over there.

At some point in the next 2 weeks or so we are going to have to shut down the site for a few hours whilst we move all the data (there is a lot) that process can take up to 6 hours and then we can switch over.

In doing so we kind of have a few choices.

I can pick a point in time and say right I am taking a snapshot here and we are moving to the new server, no posts after that point in time will be migrated over to the new server but you can post here until the server move is complete and the DNS switched over.

Another way we could do it is take the snapshots, put the site in maintenance mode and transition across meaning we pickup from where we left off just a few hours later. In all the downtime shouldn't be too long and I can try to do it at a time when everyone is doing other things.

Would like to hear your preferences.

Dan
ctrl + alt + delete GE and Bozo posts must create terabytes of space

Thanks for responding Dan. I am technically inept but from yesterday it takes considerably more time to loan content. I am based in Berry, NSW. The site still works fine so is not a problem to me.

Look at you Dan. Talking like I have the slightest fricking idea what any of this means.

I have found the site loads quickly on my phone & in Chrome browser on my laptop. However, in Edge browser on my laptop it is sluggish - despite clearing cache etc.

ahem **** Edge.....hahaha that is weird though my guess is it doesn't support br compression I will look into it

I've not noticed any difference in load time. I suppose the acid test will be when it gets busy but so far so good

Dan, Edge is no longer lagging and the alerts button is also now functioning properly ✅

Hi Dan, I am still having problems. I couldn't post a new thread in Edge. It was necessary to use Chrome for this. As well, there is sometimes a long lag after clicking the Reply button.

if its only Edge that is causing it on your computer that would lend to a local cacheing issue.

Are you able to clear the cache and possibly silvertails cookies for edge and see if that helps?

Yes, it is only Edge.

Before seeing your latest message, I'd reinstalled Edge, but this didn't help.

At your suggestion, I cleared all cache & cookies. Silvertails now loads faster. However, Post Thread mostly doesn't load correctly. For this to happen, I have to toggle the Discussion & Poll buttons a couple of times.

Dan, mostly the site works okay in Edge, so no need to spend too much time on this issue (unless it's also a problem for others). I can use Chrome when necessary :)

No one has reported it but if one person is having an issue then it's something I need to work on fixing
