Turbo back.. at centre

From Nico at the SMH:

It’s been a rollercoaster’: After 10 seasons, Tommy Turbo prepares for a hard-won milestone

Tom Trbojevic is the first to admit he’s taken the long road to 150 NRL games.

“It’s certainly been a rollercoaster getting there,” the Manly ace said ahead of his milestone against the Bulldogs on Friday evening. “It’s not as important as 100 or 200 NRL games, but it’s still nice. I still remember my 100th against the Warriors in 2021 before the [COVID] bubble.

“You don’t think about milestones or anything like that when you’re going through those low points in your career, but I’ll be excited for this occasion.”

Trbojevic is in his 10th season in the NRL and developed tremendous mental strength to cope with the countless injury setbacks he has had in recent years.

He won the Dally M Medal after playing just 18 NRL games in 2021, but was limited to just 11 and seven games in the following two seasons.

Since returning from his latest hamstring injury at the start of last month, Trbojevic has been nothing short of phenomenal. He scored three tries and was close to man of the match in a losing Manly side on Thursday night against Wests Tigers. He somehow wrestled Tigers halfback Aidan Sezer under the posts to deny him a try, and posed a constant threat out wide, especially in the second half.

Trbojevic, 27, is disappointed he has only played four finals games in a decade in the NRL. It is in complete contrast to some of his peers at the Panthers, Roosters and Storm, who have been finals constants in that time. He wants Manly to become September regulars, like the Sea Eagles sides of old.

“We haven’t achieved much success the past 10 years, and we want to get back to being that club that is consistently there,” Trbojevic said.

“Thursday night was a good lesson for us. We need to be at our best every week if we want to win. When we play our best footy, we know we can compete with any side. We need to learn to be consistent.

“I played one finals game in 2017, did my pec the week before the finals in 2019, and made the prelim in 2021. I’m happy with my own game at the moment.

“I’m not comparing myself to how I was playing in 2021, I’m just trying to be in the now. I’m going out and enjoying my footy, and with fullback being such an important position, I’m trying to influence the game as much as possible.”

Apart from the lean record in finals games, Trbojevic also wants to end his international drought, with his last Test for Australia way back in 2018.

One decent selection debate in the next month will be whether coach Mal Meninga sticks with incumbent and captain James Tedesco or gives Trbojevic a shot in the No.1 jersey.

“We’ll get to the end of the year and work it out, but I would love another opportunity to play for Australia,” Trbojevic said.

Manly coach Anthony Seibold said after Thursday’s 34-26 loss to the Tigers that Trbojevic was one of the few positives and had collected four successive players’ player awards.

The Sea Eagles face the Bulldogs on Friday and then host Cronulla at a packed 4 Pines Park in the final round.

So this isn't allowed... But Stefano and co are allowed to take massive cuts to go to different teams. Ridiculous.

The Centre perspective ....
Turbo is always the Centre of attention
and at his Best he is the Best Fullback in the comp

Not only has he been putting in he wants to give back, what a champion bloke!!

Trbojevic wanted to give his club back $750,000. But the NRL said no

The NRL has rejected a request by Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic to take a $750,000 pay cut in the salary cap over the next two years as a gesture of good faith.

The Sea Eagles fullback, who has been plagued by injuries over the past five years, applied to reduce his $1.15 million salary by almost a quarter after he was sidelined for two months following a hamstring injury against the Dolphins back in round 10.

Burdened by the knowledge that he had played just 28 games in three seasons for the club to that point, Trbojevic approached Manly powerbrokers about taking a significant pay cut – a gesture of goodwill he believed would alleviate some pressure at the club and rid him of the guilt he was feeling for missing so many games.

However, the NRL salary cap auditor rejected the proposal on the grounds allowing a player to take a voluntary pay cut would set a dangerous precedent, and might encourage rival clubs to pressure their players to do likewise to create salary cap space.

Trbojevic wanted to repay the club for keeping faith in him through several injury setbacks and requested the money to be used to either sign external talent, reward internal players who were underpaid or help players secure contract extensions.

Manly officials applied to the NRL on behalf of Trbojevic, who told both the club and his management he wanted to relinquish a significant portion of his salary.

A Manly official, who declined to comment citing respect for Trbojevic, confirmed the fullback had approached the club seeking a pay cut.

Included in the proposal was Trbojevic’s intention to move from fullback to centre as a bid to alleviate the stress on his body that may have contributed to his injuries.

The average salary for a top-five centre in 2024 is $855,000, significantly less than the $1.15 million a season Trbojevic stands to earn until his contract expires at the end of 2026.

The average salary of a top-five fullback in 2024 is around $1.15 million, but Trbojevic felt uneasy at pocketing fullback money if he wasn’t playing the role.

When the NSW and Australian representative returned from injury in round 18, it was in the centres, although his positional switch was short-lived after fullback Tolu Koula suffered an injury that forced Trbojevic back to the No.1 jersey the following week. He has been in sublime form since.

Under NRL rules, players are not prohibited from taking a pay cut, but it does not reduce their value under the salary cap.

In the situation involving Trbojevic, the NRL would not have allowed the Sea Eagles to reduce his value in the salary cap, making his gesture pointless.

In rare situations, players can agree to take a pay cut on the proviso they are granted a contract extension, which can alleviate cap pressure on a football club by spreading out the salary of a player over a number of years.

Well if it was a top player asking to reduce their salary at most other clubs then I think supporters would be crying foul, that something dodgy is going on. I can understand why the nrl says no plus they won't reduce his value anyway.

Wonder how much the NRL value each & every Roosters player? If going on what they value Fullbacks & Centres then Roosters are millions over the cap. What a crock of $hit!

I wonder if it is acceptable per NRL rules for Tom to sign an extension at a lower amount per year. Ie, reducing the value per year of his current contract is not permissible, but if we signed a new 4 year deal from 2025 at $800k a year then that might work. Tom gets the certainty of an extra 2 years but has to take a cut for it. Both Tom and Manly take risk, so should be acceptable

Whyyyyyyyy?????? Why in a thread title Tom back at centre??????? Are new threads completely banned?? Stop this absolute rubbish. New news should be new threads each and every time.
1 of the reasons he listed to get the pay cut was he was going to play centre to keep his career going

Must admit I thought this would have its own thread.

I think this was a great move and I think it’s a respectable thing for Tom to ask for and be thinking about the players around him and the club BUT he’s not a centre and him and whoever’s around him need to accept that, unless he has a drastically different performance at centre and a few at that compared to last time then I’ll reconsider it.

Only way around this is a Tommy 2 year contract extension on unders.
Looks like the club is trying to land a solid buy next year so this needs to happen quickly.
