Trump

We seem to have crossed in the mail ... @Isz I am inclined to agree with your analysis of the intentions behind the structure of the American system; unfortunately for the Americans I think their inflamed politics have crossed over boundaries into their judicial sphere. How to re-separate them, and generally how to lower the temperature before lasting damage is done, those will be the problems they need to solve. Well, just as an outsider looking over the fence.
Not solvable I’m afraid. Seems we are inextricably heading for a one party state (elites) who control the working class (plebs) after the destruction of the middle class. Centralised control will replace personal freedom. The idea of true democracy and one person one vote will likely be discarded to the waste basket of history. Hopefully Manly can win another premiership before then.

I have a feeling that Paul Keating's famous slur about the Senate being "unrepresentative swill" is most appropriate for the US Federal judiciary.
For me, the two biggest issues that really set the US up for failure are:
  1. The politicised judicial system.
  2. The lack of an independent electoral system like we have here. The inconsistency of voting systems and the gerrymandering of electorates just blows my mind.

and a polarising and politically motivated media inflaming passions and division ... not to mention the proliferation of unrestricted fake news ...

So Yes a female captain undergoing night flying annual evaluation!!!
Nothing to do with the fact that the air traffic control was under staffed.... up to a 1/3 below staffing levels and working up to 10 hour shifts and 6 days a week !!!!
Nothing to do with the fact that because the plane and the helicopter were not on the same channel and could not hear each others transmissions!!!!
Plus a host of other systemic errors.
No of course it had to be due to DEI ????
A tragedy that should not be used for political pathetic point scoring

“Not only was the Blackhawk flying too high, its pilot failed to heed a directive from her co-pilot, an army flight instructor, to change course”. Source NYT.

I’m not a Blackhawk pilot, but it sounds to me that if she’d turned when she was instructed to, 70 people might be alive today, regardless of staffing levels in air traffic control, radio frequencies etc.

I’m not saying there may not be other factors involved, but isn't it just as reckless to automatically dismiss DEI hiring practices as a possible cause? It is also interesting that until now, the female pilot was simply being identified in mainstream press as “the third soldier involved” in the crash, not as the pilot.

I didn't know the investigation was completed?
Meanwhile clearly some of our astute rugby league fans assume the fact a pilot was female means she obviously had to be a 'DEI' hire
(Presumably because they believe, who in their right mind would let a female train to be a helicopter pilot)(or something).
These are probably the same people that tell jokes (to each other) about women drivers, no doubt they crack each other up

Turns out the Blackhawk helicopter pilot in the DC airliner crash was a female trainee who ignored directives from her male trainer to turn away to avoid the collision. I recall Trump being lambasted for linking the crash to DEI policies.
Have not read she was a trainee?

Judging by this it did not seem that way but happy to be corrected

Capt. Rebecca M. Lobach, of Durham, North Carolina, served as an aviation officer (15A) in the regular Army from July 2019 to January 2025. She has no deployments. She was assigned to the 12th Aviation Battalion, Ft Belvoir, Va. Her awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.

With more than 450 hours of flight time, she earned certification as a pilot-in-command after extensive testing by the most senior and experienced pilots in her battalion.

From the reporting I have seen it seemed like she did ignore a direction however it also seems there were other potential contributing factors.....although the sources I have seen seem sketchy at best!

It was a training mission. Hence she was a trainee.

The US Armed Forces have openly adopted DEI practices, including gender quotas. I think it is reasonable to assume a female Blackhawk pilot is a byproduct of those policies.

I am sure there are many great female pilots. No argument. But I am open minded enough to ponder whether filling quotas based on gender, skin colour and other factors might lead to those best qualified for roles being overlooked.

Any thoughts on HMNZS Manawanaui?

Yes she made an error and apparently failed to listen to an instructor that was disastrous for all... my point is there were a whole lot of systemic failures and to assign the tragedy to DEI is irresponsible and demeaning to all women serving in the military and as first responders.
Consider the NSW police Inspector than ran into the Bondi Mall at risk of her own life and ended probably saving many other lives..... women don't have to be DEI hires to be capable and heroic

Trump did more in 100 days then Biden had done in 4 years feathered friend

Trump has delivered on his promises with bold action and clear results. He prioritized securing the border, reinstated strong immigration policies, and finished the wall in key areas. Trump revitalized the economy by slashing regulations and bringing jobs back to America. He defended American energy, withdrew from harmful global agreements, and put American interests first. His swift executive actions dismantled Biden-era diversity mandates and returned power to the people. Trump restored law and order, backed law enforcement, and strengthened the military. In just 100 days, he kept his word and proved that leadership rooted in patriotism can get results fast.

His Tariffs have put every Country on Notice that America is not in the hands of Sleepers any More and Trump will keep Tweaking his Tariffs Until his Nation Gets the Best Possible Deal .

I guess we will have to wait for the full report to determine exactly what happened, but based purely on what has been reported in the NY Times, pilot error appears to be the main cause. I’m not sure how “systemic failures” contributed to the pilot not changing course when instructed to.

My issue with DEI is that it is almost by definition, the antithesis of selection on merit. It forces organisations to meet quotas for certain segments of the community, rather than selecting the most able candidate, be they man, woman, black, gay whatever.

This accident itself is a case in point. The FAA in the US was already fighting a class action lawsuit alleging that it had denied 1,000 would be air traffic controllers jobs because of diversity hiring targets. The crux of the lawsuit is that the FAA, under the Obama administration, dropped a skills based system for hiring controllers, and replaced it with a “biographical assessment” in a bid to boost the number of minority applicants. One of the plaintiffs, a white male, was turned down despite receiving a 100% score on his training exam.

So it appears one of the “systemic failures”/air traffic controller shortages you referenced earlier may in fact have been caused by DEI policies that resulted in perfectly qualified candidates outside of selected demographic segments being turned away.

I’m not saying all women are selected to meet DEI targets. That would be ridiculous. It would be equally ridiculous to say women don’t excel in just about every job/role. I am saying that DEI increases the probability that people hired for roles may not be the most qualified candidate. In the case of Blackhawk helicopter pilots, I assume that the population of males who aspire to be such significantly outnumbers the population of females. If the DEI quota is 50/50, the resultant outcome is almost mathematically guaranteed to be sub-optimal, given the different population sizes.

DEI doesnt matter so much in non critical jobs like working in an office. But when you start applying it in areas where people’s lives are at stake, I think it is entirely appropriate to question its validity. I for one, will never fly in the US again knowing that the body that hires air traffic controllers has DEI quotas to fill, including for those with severe intellectual disabilities and psychological problems.

How to I delete a mistaken thumbs up as I went to write?

Governing for the good of all IS nOT a DEAL

You are not married to an American, you maybe have never lived there. You don't have family who have lost their job to an idiot, or had a dear friend have a mild stroke (fortunately) when her social security was evaporated into thin air and the person on the other end saying they had thousands cancelled in error
You don't have relations who are gay and married wondering if they have life in the US anymore.

Totally this thread needs to go.... too many are listening to the far right hateful media

Yes but it's just a footy fan site. In general I recommend to call out dangerous bs when you see it, if only for the benefit of those who may not have thought of the counter points.

Some readers are closed minded and not inclined to think.

And yet others think it's all just an excuse to wind up 'the lefties' and have a giggle. They aren't worth engaging with.

Yet the arguments are worth exposing anyway (and credit to you for doing so)!

Not engaging to take the high moral ground or because you may be bereft of an argument?
Far right hateful media as opposed to far left hateful media? “All conservatives are nazis” sounds a tad hateful to me.
Closed minded can be applied equally to both sides. Not engaging sounds pretty close minded to me.
