Too many sin bins? Let's have more, say the NRL

Referees will be given discretion to sin bin players for serious instances of foul play – even if the victim is able to continue playing – under a change to the NRL Laws and Interpretations.

"Until now, the rules did not allow referees to use the sin bin for foul play unless the victim of foul play was forced to leave the field and was unlikely to take any further part of the game.

"So we have seen players commit acts of foul play, put on report but miss no game time.

"We don't think that is an adequate deterrent so, from Round 15 onwards, referees will be able to use the sin bin for foul play whether the victim has to leave the field or not."

CEO Todd Greenberg said the sin bin could be used for high tackles, dangerous throws, globaleagle, shoulder charges and crusher tackles.

"The sin bin could also be used for cheap late shots on playmakers who play such a key role in our game," he said.

Again, no mention of a five-minute sin bin.
Ten minutes is often too great a punishment, particularly for repeated penalties.

I always believed the coaches/owners/whoever never pushed for a 5 min sin bin because they felt it would be easier for the ref's to use it as opposed to the 10 minute sin bin. Refs used to be reluctant in sending a player off for that length of time.

However, under this new regime of crazy, refs aren't afraid to use the bin so I think that now, more than ever, the coaches and owners should push for a 5 min one.

Another anti manly rule. Manly dont have playmakers to take out .
Seriously i wonder how refs interpret playmaker consistently. One mans trash ........... But as the rugby league universe that seems unable to produce more than a half dozen playmakers per decade, due to poor funding at grass roots. Some teams nucleus are inspirational players as opposed to playmakers but just as important to the team and result
The globaleagle rule seems fair enough though. Need to clean that **** up. Its a blight

WTFF?
Another rule change mid season, what is this guy on?
He should get the refs to understand the rules as a priority then make changes in the off season, just like they did last off season...
and then they can clamp down on them for the first month or so and then forget about them.
He's like a kid that sees a shiny new toy that he thinks is better than the one he's got - but if he didn't f*&k up the one he had he wouldn't need a new one!

Im all for protecting players, but watch the Refs send people willy nilly.

You watch, there will be more late hit penalties now they know they can sin bin.

Time for a 5 min sin bin cause a 10 min sin bin for a desperation try saving shoulder tackle where no-one is hurt is overly harsh.

Is anyone else sick of the carry on about this ?? It's a contact sport, the deterrent for playmakers going to the line and ball playing IS the fear of getting whacked. I'm not condoning late shots or dirty play, but if a half back goes to the line turns his back and draws in the defence and offloads then occasionally the fine line between late and on time gets crossed - that's footy. Don't want to get whacked ? then don't turn your back or don't go as deep into the line.

I can see this rule being over employed and farked up by the refs to the point where halves will be like protected species dummying and running through the line because defences are afraid to commit to them in fear of mistiming their hit and getting sin binned. It'll be the new obstruction cluster.

A direct response to the late hit on thurston in the manly game. JT has a sook and toddy jumps to it to make himself look good protecting the future immortal sook. If it had been DCE hit late do you think toddy would give a ****? Of course not.

No penalty on this playmaker - no judiciary charge either !!

True that.
DCE put in a grubber though late in the game v Warriors and was tackled well after the kick and yet nothing from the ref's or commentators.
Admittedly he wasn't going to get to the ball but a penalty on the last 10m out may have been handy.

The game is becoming a sad imitation of itself. Just another brick in the wall.

More grey area rules open to interpretation. My goodness, please start making it simpler for these morons in the middle. We don’t have the referee talent of the late 90s and early 00s to be making rules like this.

I can imagine a game where we only have Taufua, Uate, and Hodkinson left out there.

Two men who can't catch and man without knees.

It would be impossible NOT to score LOL

Agreed , these clowns just don't get it. They seem to have a new rule change after one of the future immortals has a whinge.

I noticed there was no outcry when Kasiano put a much worse & cheaper shot on JT , yet when Gozzy did it , it was like he hit him with a machete.

is there anyone else who thought that Goziewski's hit on JT wasn't really late ? & he was committed to the tackle?

Let’s be honest here , Greenberg ordered the crackdown because , members of his family and the rugby league community in general had made the assumption that he was in fact , dead.
The bloke does nothing, and then pops up to make a statement about SSM or something else irrelevant and then disappears for another 6 months ,while the game dies of a thousand cuts.
