[Resurrected] Tom Wright, the enigma

Also hard for your forwards to win the battle in the middle when there defending on their line set after set because the halves can't find touch from a penalty or produce a simple kicking game at the end of a set as happened in the first half on the weekend.
That was Tom Wright. Embarrassing! Two bombs in the first half went backwards, and his kick for touch after a penalty failed. No wonder a teammate took over the kicking duties. As per my original post, the contrast between Tom's two halves was remarkable.
There is plenty of talent in the Under 20s team, but their defence is leakier than President Trump's administration. They do have an easy run home so they should finish in the top four.

nrl.com Facebook page has posted a 'meet Tom Wright' clip from the weekends games. It's just the 2 tries he scored in the second half but bejesus the kids got some pace.
second in the clip he burns both the 5 and 1 from the rooters.
he obviously still needs some work but the kids talented thats for sure.
personally think it's a little unfair to criticise a player given so much responsibility in a team. playmaker. goal kicker. general play kicking. touch kicks. You wouldn't give DCE crap so why give it to Wright. OH HANG ON. This is the silvertails and we love heaping ****e on players when they don't reach the lofty expectations of all us former rep standard league players...
Sorry forgot where I was posting for a second there.

****e at the readddyyyyyyy! Fling away my feathered friends.....

In a canter too, wow.

This is all a moot point though. I have it on good authority that an up-and-comer named Aaron Groom is a certainty for our next available halves spot.

Settle down. We'd all love to see Wright fulfil his potential but until you've seen him play a full match then relying on Facebook clips, or brag videos, tells only part of the story. He was introduced to Manly fans as "the finest schoolboy rugby player in years", so our expectations were high. He was tried at fullback, unsuccessfully, and has been moved into 5/8. He is not the team's goalkicker, and was relieved of line-kicking duties and 'bombs' last Sunday. He had an absolute shocker in the first half, but was magic in the second half. That's what this post is about.
This is Wright's last year in the Under 20's so next season he'll be playing against men. If you'll cast your mind back a few years you'll recall how Tom Turbo slaughtered opposition when he was playing Under 20s. There are many players Wright's age playing First Grade but in my opinion he has not progressed as far as I'm sure most of us had hoped.
I do think Wright has the skills to be our First Grade 5/8, possibly as early as next season. But he is going to have to reduce his mistakes dramatically.

He is NRL potential imo.....Wright has amazing attacking attributes, but lacks the solid game required to orchestrate a team around the park and from games I have seen him (5-6)......his kicking is hot and cold, can nudge a ball far, but often direct and his short kicking game tends to be for himself....I mean we have DCE as that "Instinctive" half....I therefore doubt he will be the 5/8 option as the controlling half....can he play centre/Wing - seems to have genuine speed and super footwork ??

I'd like to see him having a go at wing when he comes to first grade and let him develop for other positions.

He started at fullback, now plays five-eighth and I'm sure he could handle centre - even halfback. But in these days of bean-pole wingers I don't think that is a realistic option.

I Know! Out of fairness lets let Bellyache have him. Before we know it he will be Thurston,Cronk and DCE all rolled into one with the pace of Turbo on the side.
I strongly dislike the cheating bastards down there and their coach but one things for sure the SOB can turn any pigs ear into a silk purse at in the blink of an eye.
I really hope we can keep the kid....

Sorry Al just saw your post. Bainbridge didnt play as he is still injured. Funa has struggled to re-discover his form since returning from injury, to say his defence on Sunday was poor would be an understatement, his stats of 9 tackles made and 7 missed were the worst in a team total of 45 missed tackles.
Just noticed your response post , Smithy and thanks for the Info. Also hope that Wright can progress to a future career player for the Sea Eagles and even just based on his very impressive natural ability and talent.

He's over 6 feet tall and a fairly solid 90 kg plus.
I agree, I think wing would be an ideal initiation in first grade for him. Speed is coming back in fashion on the wings. The days of the massive unit out there like a vatuvai who had decent pace but not explosive seem to be ending. No doubt a massive unit with speed will also be popular like vunivalu although there aren't many like him. The likes of addo Carr at Melbourne, Bevan French at parramatta, Alex Johnston played most of the year at wing, Nathan Ross at Newcastle they are all super fast and all smaller than Wright at 6'2 and 90 odd kg. Jordan Rapana is about Wrights height and he goes ok too.

Big Tent on the weekend...65 minutes 18 hit ups for 149 metres.18 tackles,1 missed tackle,1 try assist,3 offloads and 1 error. This is what he is capable of,just needs to do it on a regular basis and about time too.....
Good. That's what we need.
I didn't see the match but it's remarkable that he seems to have played well and yet we got beaten by the second worst team in the comp - one who were lapped by 78-points a few weeks earlier.
