The thing about the Superbowl ...

The thing that sticks out for me with the superbowl is that it was played in Miami ..... so supporters of San Francisco and Kansas that have supported their team all year ... have to travel to Miami .. or watch the game on tele ....

How would Rugby League fans handle that ....?

How do out of Sydney teams deal with that now .. ?

Is it a bad thing ... ?

Initially, my instinctive reaction is outrage at the suggestion of moving a Manly Grandfinal .. to say Adelaide ... but then that would make at least one Manly fan I know happy ... but then I thought that if each year the host city and ground were put out for tender ... state tourist boards and ground owners would be offering up a far amount of needed cash to the game of Rugby League and it would be taking the game to a far wider audience ...

There is probably only 6 cities that would be in a position to host and bid .... Sydney, Melb, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Auckland .... but competition between those cities should be brisk ....

Doesn't seem to hurt the NFL ......

I understand that the cheapest tickets were around $A5,000....

One of the things that irks me about gridiron is that the guy with the ball is allowed to run over the sideline and not lose possession. Can you imagine if a rugby player did this, rather than take the tackle like a man?

I did it all the time ... the sideline was my best friend ......

I think it would make that Manly fan EXTREMELY happy 😎

Would roving the Grand Final around the country work like it does for the NFL and the Super Bowl? Until the competition becomes truly national and league gets established outside of the east coast I don't think it would work. Oh sure they would probably fill the Adelaide Oval or Optus Stadium, maybe even the MCG. But the problem would be convincing two teams fans to travel.

What for argument sake would be the situation if the game was set for Perth and one of the teams was the Warriors?

Lets put things in perspective ....

IMO These two babies made the Super Bowl Super

J.Lo and Shakira shook the Stadium and the tv ratings hit 10 on the rectascale

Absolutely phenomenal , breathtaking , astonishing , mind blowing performance .

They outdid all the NFL the players hands down and legs up .

Sit back and enjoy the replay of the real Super Bowl highlights ....

But the problem would be convincing two teams fans to travel.

Why is that a problem .... if the ground is full ... it is full .... and the fans at home add to the TV audience .... of the 65.000 fans in Miami ,how many were fans of the 2 teams playing and how many were fans of the event .... does it matter .... what matters is the game is showcased and successful .... how many of the fans at the big bash are cricket fans ?

What is the difference between Warriors playing in Perth or Sydney ? ....

@Woodsie ask the same question once we have a population of 270 million, and there are 30 one city teams...then it would be easy to fill a 70,000 seat stadium in any city.

as for Australia now? It wouldn’t work.

Not sure you are right .... Sydney, Melb, Brisbane and Auckland I see no problem .... Adelaide and Perth .. don't know .... didn't we take a SOO to Perth ?

Out of the 65000 people in the stadium, 30000 were the 49ers team, reserves and coaches, 30,000 were the chiefs team, reserves and coaches, 4000 media, 998 dancers + jlo and shakira.

there was no room for any footy fans at all.

@HoldenV8 ... just on that ... a mate recently took his family to the Big Bash in Coff's Harbour ... bloke has never watched a cricket game in his life ... and the ground was packed by other people who wouldn't know who Bradman was .... a sellout .... but the event was a huge success and the game was the winner ......

... and there is now 1000 kids with Sixers Jerseys and merchandise at home .....

To have a GF in another state would cause a turmoil amongst fans .It came up the end of last year with the stadiums in Sydney being rebuilt and the call from Brisbane about playing the GF up there so now the GF will stay in Sydney to a smaller crowd
I don’t have a problem with it being in another state you make a good weekend away out of it
The difference with the NFL to ARL is huge by millions , more money , more people and the game is played Nationally
Those facts won’t stop Toddy coming back and claiming our game is just as big and we need to expand these ideas and move forward then do nothing

I'd like to see what they did with the week leading in if they took it away.
I remember times when they have got it right but mostly they completely waste a weeks promotional, celebration opportunity.
Have it all in one spot, non stop stuff for the kids, bars and music for the adults, GF teams appearances and all clubs with stalls and players etc.
As I said they have done this but the turd seems to have deemed it unnecessary.
I wouldn't have an objection but they need to arrive in these places like Apollo Creed entering the ring and maintain it all the way through.
Albeit the NFL have 2 weeks but 1 should be enough to make a lasting impression done right.
Which is where my confidence is down.
And that the refs don't f*ck it up...

They do it in the cfl (canadian footy league) as well.

Smaller population, only about 6-7 cities (like aust) but fans travel and the hosting city makes a big week of it.

Works fine.

27 years ago some guy said he wasn't going to wear long pants again until his team won the cfl championship. NO biggie you say until you find out it gets down to -30.

Well.... finally this year his team won and he put on the long pants. Said it felt weird .

Any idea is worth consideration....and as proven, it works well in the USA....but, I have massive doubts it would work as well here in Oz.
There is a far larger fan base in the USA who simply love the sport and are willing to get along and support the game, even if their side is not involved, which is rare in Australia.
I personally travel a couple of hours when Manly play in Qld and will be heading to Townsville in 2020 against the Cows, but would prefer to watch games Manly are not playing, on the telly.
Also the setup is different for fans in the USA from a young age, who are bought up with the Tradition the Super Bowl venue changes every year, where in Australia, we are familiar with the GF played in Sydney and it's hard to change tradition...but nice thread Woodsie, where there will be good arguments both ways.

The ticket sales alone would've come close to a billion AUD. With an event like that you'd be a fool not to sell it to the highest bidder. NRL being a 2 state sport, in a small country, could only dream of such a thing.

Maybe, but I would prefer not to play in Queensland Or Melbourne. I’d go to Perth, Auckland, Adelaide

Somehow it was deemed a Kansas home game?
But when you compare populations US-330 million to our paltry 25 million. You could play it in the Nevada desert and you’d fill the joint.
