I read today that John Sutton is about to become Souff's first 300 game player .... well done ...

... but how does a club that has been going since 1908 have only one player to reach this milestone ... when Manly has had 2 since only 1947 ....

Is it lack of loyalty .... is it mismanagement that sees them unable to hold on to them?

1908 seems irrelevant as all 300 plus players have been in the last 35 years, then only 8 clubs have had players reach that mark.......so not that crazy really

That said I think the 300 mark will become more and more common

Far less games in 1908 when you and I were basking on the Hill Woodsie.

If certain players can include super league game (different comp??) then why can't Beaver's northern eagles games (same comp/same licence)

The above totals are for playing for one club (not total rugby league games for their career).

Menzies played a total of 349 NRL games and 128 super league games!!

To go with 13 test matches, 20 origin appearances, 8 city games and 20 final series games!

your list tells the story, just not enough games in a season until recently.

You missed Beaver

I think that Souffs 200 club is sparsely populated as well - 4 or 5 members I suspect. We'd have 2 or 3 times as many 200 gamers as they would.

Souths were always a poor club and their good players were headhunted mainly by Easts and Manly ;)
Plus they were not in the comp 200-2001

The SL war saw Mario leave just before he hit the 300 games.

Surprised that the Dogs don't have a Mortimer or a Hughes in this milestone

300 will be harder to reach now that the Cap is in effect.

@Simonmyers11 my point is that the likes of lockyer played in a super league comp in Aust , might have been for the broncos but it was a different comp. just a matter of opinion but in my eyes if the powers that be won't recognise Beaver's achievements then I don't recognise lockyer's achievements

Yeah it really annoys me they don't include Beaver in that list. Its not like he left Manly and went elsewhere, the NE where just a temporary evolution (regression) of the club.

It always struck me as a bit weird with Souths as with Easts.

However the deciding factor is that in those formative years there was two World Wars which removed a large % of the male population. Even though the competition continued many many players served in the armed forces, often for many years.

The second big factor is there was often only 8 teams in the comp before Manly and Parra joined in '47, so 14 regular games a season, plus 2 finals matches. At that rate in would take 19 seasons to get 300 games or 13 seasons to play 200 games.

It was really only after Sharks and Penrith joined in '67, a 12 team comp meaning 22 home and away games and 3 finals, it became really possible to play 200 games in 9 seasons.

I would suggest ,many Souths players have played over 200 games, just not at one club. Players like McCarthy, Coote, Stevens, Branighan just to name a few.
