The No-Look News (Schuster Chronicles)

Anything but the Starfire 4 that was dumped into the original VB Commodore's.

I've never driven a more gutless engine in my life. And Holden thought it would be a big seller because it was an economical 4......
Watch at the end where he talks about engines.

Of course trannys were his favourite topic, not engines.

I will always wonder what might have been if Des had not had his short term favourite son blinkers on when he signed Foran for 2 seasons, effectively forcing Schuster into the forwards.

Foran did zero to improve our team while he was here and Schuster went backwards and the rest is history.

Are you suggesting that having to wait until age 21 to get a full time start at 5/8 derailed Josh's career?

Or that we could/would somehow have won a premiership in 2021 with Josh at #6?

just giving a different point of view - I think Des could see that Josh was a back rower and not a 5/8. Personally, I agree.

Sure, he is talented and skilful but that’s only a small part of being a good 6. The most important aspects of the role are consistency, reliability, building combinations, percentage football, and smart 5th tackle options. Josh could pull a rabbit out of a hat less often than he could throw it over the sideline without looking.

He was enigmatic, raw, injury prone and unfit during his time under Hasler. He didn’t demand the role over Foran in a footballing sense, he simply demanded it through his manager.

I wish him no ill will and hope he gets it together, but I think he is responsible for his own destiny.

Obviously I don’t expect you to agree, just sharing my perspective 👍

Sue Ransom was a very accomplished race driver from the early 70s until around the mid-80s. She raced touring cars, sports cars. She did rallying and even competed in drag racing.

Some of the testing took place at the Sandown Raceway in Melbourne.

Yes but his form was hot and cold after that and he mustn't have been training well behind the scenes.

Bit of the cart before the horse there EB. Let's go back to 2020. He was a star junior and got his first opportunity in first grade in Round 17 as 5/8. That was his first and only appearance in first grade that year. Suffered an injury and didn't play another game that year. But it was an impressive first game. In the off season Hasler brought in Foran. Said he would use him as a bench player or even hooker. Instead he brought him straight into 5/8 and shifted Schuster to second row. Schuster from that time rarely played 5/8 again until a year or so later. So the hot and cold only applies much later because he played like a second 5/8 in 2021 despite doing a second rowers tackling as well, and he performed consistently well. He wasn't hot and cold that year but that year he put on weight, partly to deal with the second row needs. So what happened was a star junior 5/8, and he was one of the very best juniors as described by critics, is thrust into a forward position requiring a more defence and weight increase. That I believe is where Schuster lost his enthusiasm.

I dont think Schus Issue is lack of Enthusiasm
I think his Issue is lack of Discipline feathered friend
Every one is Enthusiastic in getting something done but not every gets it done because they lack the Discipline of the hard word needed

The Moral of the Story
You can have the Talent
You can have the Enthusiasm
But if you dont have the Discipline to sacrifice your Doomed for failure

He should never have been used as a 6 at junior level. It was mismanagement. He was skilful playing against kids but the NRL was never going to as easy. He learned to play lazy, take easy options and throw caution to the wind. It looked good and it made our junior sides successful, but it was at the expense of Josh’s future.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and mine is that a good six needs more than a skilful passing game.

My take is that Schu was unable to put enough pressure on the coachs to pick him at 6 in first grade so they put him in second row as a way of accommodating his “potential”…

he played some good games but was generally inconsistent and his off-the-ball efforts were largely poor…
At some point it all got too hard for Josh, too hard for the coaches then too hard for his teammates and now he is in a vermin jersey…

Good bye, good luck, “next!” (but not on a ridiculous “potential value” contract please)…

I feel for Schuster as I think he suffers from depression or the likes, but if Foran starting at 5/8th for 2 years was enough to kill his motivation for fulfilling his potential then he would surely have cracked under the pressure he would have been under had he become a fulltime 5/8th in the first grade.

He had plenty of opportunities to prove himself to be a first grade footballer (whether in the 2nd row or at 5/8th) & failed to do so.

I don't think the blame can be placed on anyone or the club. It just wasn't to be.

The implication there is that anyone playing five eight must be lazy. He was put in the 5/8 spot because he was outstanding in the role, better than as a second rower. Won awards for it including State Player of the Year U16s, Ken Arthurson and Jake Trbojevic rising star awards, and was considered by certain judges of the game to be he next super star on the rise., all as five eighth.

The problem was he was a kid with amazing skills destined for Manly's five eight spot and then betrayed and thrust into the second row, which he hadn't played for years. He also didn't have the weight for second row immediately but was put into a position where he was playing second five eighth and doing twice the defence of Foran (his average was around 28 a game to 17 for Foran). He was one of only three forwards who then had to play the full 80 minutes, Jake and Croker the other two.. He was made into a work horse who also had to perform in setting up play. It was a betrayal. The death of his closest mate Titmus of course compounded the problem.

WOW ... the number of people in denial here is breathtaking ... it was Dessie's fault ... it was Sieb's fault ... it was being moved to 2nd rows fault ... it was the injuries fault ... it was the secret recipe of herbs and spices fault ...

Meanwhile the much maligned Froggy, with three knee reconstructions ... moved from 5/8th to hooker .. had Api, and Fainu ahead of him ... just said ... "hold my beer, I'll have a go"

Players, and /or their managers seemingly making demands on what position they need to play isn't working out that well, is it?

I'm sorry,

Are you seriously suggesting Shu was betrayed by Des/the Club by finding a spot for him in first grade after Foran was signed again?

I'd take that sort of betrayal every day of the week.

"Betrayed" what the... (I agree with Mave!)

He also didn't have the weight for second row immediately
can't help suspecting you have invented this one Bear :giggle:

This was Josh in 2017 - aged 16 years and one month - already looking bigger than Test forward Jake Turbo !!

Have to agree to disagree. He was still athletic enough to play 80 in 2021 but as he grew into his body and filled out, he started gassing bad at the back end of games and was a liability. I don’t see the implication either…I’m talking about Schu being a 6 in NYC and being able to throw the ball around instead of getting busy in contact.

It’s funny, in all of these discussions, we keep talking about hypotheticals and this and that, but the proof is in the pudding. The evidence is there; his career is floundering.

anyone who remembers that Schu intercept against the riff in 2023 (where he ran 30m and then kicked… wtf?)… or even the interception against the knights (where he looked like he was running in mud before he passed to Garrick)… knows that Schu is not an NRL level back… too big, too slow…

Some will say “they were great intercepts and show his skill” which is partially right… but the flip side of that argument is they are the lazy play that just depends on good hands (which he has) and a bit of luck… plenty of times he did not get the intercept and ended up in no-man’s-land which let the defence down…
