The Daly Cherrygraph

Just my opinion and not an attack but it’s been stated many times on the forum that DCE’s contract has inhibited balance across the squad and I just don’t see how. Almost every club in the NRL have 2-3 players up around a million bucks. It’s not always a halfback but it’s par for the course in the game. Even a side like the Titans have Tino and Fafita on big deals.

we can also infer that 750k was set aside for a half back next year. Even if we land a guy like Fogerty for best case scenario (500k), that’s 250k spare. That’s not revolutionising our roster.

We’ve got guys on decent money that aren’t returning the investment. That’s the problem, not DCE’s contract.
It's not just DCE's contract though, it's the other factors I stated in my post too IMO.

We've been hamstrung by DCE's contract, Turbo's injuries, Manase's court case dragging on, Schuster's inability to get fit, & the ripple effects of all of them.

Its Funny at Manly
We always come up with Excuses for our circumstances
But we Never have the Capacity Come up with solutions
Solutions is what Brings Success

The moral of the story
Any Tom Dick and Harry can Identify problems
Smart and Successful People find Solutions

Mention of the bulldogs & how well they're doing - they basically got rid of their whole top 30 squad in a 3 year period once Gus took control.

That's a massive clean out that would not have been possible here at Manly, with the Tartak-Fulton alliance embedding 10-11 players in our top 30 that were used to leverage upgrades & extensions for each of them because we'd committed to the western pathways program.

A subset of that was the Manase legal situation & us letting Api go to throw all our eggs in that basket.

Then you have the DCE, Turbo & Jurbo contracts that we would have had to break & pay out.

We were pretty much entangled in a wicked web of player managers & recruitment officers & big longterm contracts for our top 3.

This is why I like what Mestrov has done since he got here - he basically took out the (Tartak & (with respect) Fulton) trash & now we're finally seeing light at the end of the DCE ratchet clause tunnel. I'm sure there's more good news to come.

Its not necessrily his cost but what you need to surround him with for him to be effective . He is a great number 2 , but a very costly number 1 has to be added to supplement for the game he doesn't bring or manly dont play with it, which is largely what we have seen play out this last decade , with a few glimpses when we jagged a bargain like green

Id days gone by if your halves spending had a budget of around 1.8 or 2 mill , he all in
7 is the most important position on the field. If ever there was a position that demands 1mil and up, it's 7. Fair enough, you don't think he has earned the money and don't rate his contribution; I can live with that but it's not really what this discussion is about. The discussion is about the money he is taking up in the cap and personally, I don't think it has any bearing on our success and/or lack of. Putting a mil up for a halfback that is the incumbent QLD Origin Captain and former Australian halfback sounds about market value to me.

It's completely plausible to have a million dollar half and have enough money to spend elsewhere to build a quality roster around them. He hasn't stopped us being able to do that...we just haven't been able to because we upgrade on potential and pay overs to keep players that are not quite elite because we cannot compete in the market with the big guns.

To free up his funds and go and buy a guy like Fogerty for not much less is just further confirmation that DCE's contract has not been an issue.

Yesterday was just one example. They have had a bunch of Neville's playing in the forwards for the last two years after Ciraldo got rid of some forwards that did not buy into "the gameplan"

What has Spoony done? Got rid of Keppie and replaced with Waddell and Brown - give me a break.
Our forwards have gone backwards since Seibold has taken over.
I wouldn't say they have gone backwards but I agree they haven't gone forwards as much as I would like. That's why I'm not sad to see the back of DCE. We can't compete with the top sides with a Temu forward pack.

Seems many fans have a set on DCE because of the huge contract he signed back in 2015. Again DCE's only part in this was after a Management bungle by having him break a million a year contract with another club. So how is he accountable?

1. Manly offered DCE a contract significantly less in 2015 and he baulked. Manly then withdrew the offer after giving an imposed dead line and DCE had no option but to look elsewhere
2. Foran was given a similar offer but Manly seemed to procrastinate with him trying to outbid Parramatta. By that time DCE had gone. Then Foran signed with Parra on a million dollar contract primarily over loyalty to Arthur. Manly had lost both halves.
3. Enter Fulton. He managed to entice DCE back with the 1.2 million a year contract. It meant DCE had to deal with heavy criticism from all quarters. What's not talked about is Fulton also tried to entice Foran back with a similar deal and reportedly almost succeeded (there were contract issues between Parra and Foran that also almost broke the deal). Foran's loyalty to Arthur seems to have decided the issue.
So if Foran had accepted the deal to return he would have been on the same terms as DCE.
All comes back to the retention committee of that time, the same one that let Gutherson go while our champion backline Jamie Lyon, Matai and Brett Stewart were near retiring. So who is at fault?

that's true, but ancient history.
I've been a fan and defender of DCE but don't understand his media assault at all. Like... "as soon as my contracts over I'm finished with Manly (I won't say why). But Queensland? That's a team I love to play for!"
Sheesh, thanks a bunch Daly.

Probably not too far off the mark but in terms of the initial stages , 100 % sure that the initial offer to both D C E and Foz was 750 K ; [ ironically what Manly have offered D C E now ] and D C E was more then prepared to accept that initial offer in late 2015 .
But Foz apparently didn 't and Manly delayed any finalization for D C E for some time then while Foz was being a bit equivocal behind the scenes.
Then some sort of a deadline for D C E which he was not pleased about and after he was probably aware what increased offers the Foz was receiving elsewhere and some indicated preference for Foz by the club .
Anyway totally unrelated to the recent circus revolving around D C E and the club and hindsight is again a fascinating aspect but the tradeoff between Dylan Walker and Gutho back in late 2016 was regarded in a much more favorable light at the time
