The Daly Cherrygraph

Andrew Webster a journo who I respect said this morning that when he asked for the release for season 2024 it was for family reasons? So next season appears the roosters but last season it had nothing to do with them.
Unless he wanted to go back to Qld, what other family reasons would it be? He's more than comfortably set up in Sydney financially and his kids are settled in school, so we hear.
Only other reason/excuse is he's received a better offer elsewhere!

Hmm i think all journos are as trustworthy as our captain. Interesting that Chad Townshend was signed in July for just the one season.

If you're a journo trying to promote a new podcast without the backing a major media organisation, you can bet your life you'll be making things up to appear relevant. And what would be easier than confidential family reasons?

Perspective is a wonderful thing

1. State of Origin series is widely considered the highest-rated event in NRL

2.The State of Origin is regularly described as the pinnacle of rugby league, even surpassing international competitions
Maybe by the media ..... to me it is a made up concept to sell advertising and hype. It is over rated. I hate with a passion how it interrupts the premiership. I'd prefer a Manly win vs a SOO win any day of the week. Each to their own.

What? a new podcast? it was on sen live and fox sports live to suggest he made it up is ridiculous. You do know he works for The Aistralian now?

Hey guys. First post on here, have been following the forum for years. Thought I would jump on and give my two bobs worth.

The idea that Manly hasn’t won a comp purely because of his big contract doesn’t hold up. There are too many factors at play, different rosters, injuries, and recruitment decisions so blaming just his salary is oversimplified. What’s clear is that since 2021, DCE has consistently been a top-three halfback based on key stats like kick meters, try assists, and line-break assists. Whether people love or hate him, his on-field impact has been undeniable. Anyone vowing to boycott the game because DCE is playing needs to take a deep breath and unclench it’s not that deep, fellas.

As for the way he’s handled this, it’s smart. By controlling when and how this news came out, he’s shaped the media narrative to his advantage. And let’s be honest, if the Roosters threw an extra $500k at most players, they’d at least consider it. It’s a business move, and he’s played it well.

Looking ahead, Manly’s long-term future is strong. Next year might be a bit of a grind with some young players still developing, but the club has most key pieces locked in. The priority should be securing Galvin, letting Brooks steer the ship for a few seasons, and by the time he moves on, someone like Joey Walsh could be ready to step up. If things go to plan, Manly could be setting up another DCE/Foz-style halves pairing for the future.
Great first post , welcome ( and don’t let it be your last ) 👏👏👏👏

The media gig will be largely Sydney based , he’s not coming home

With due respect this isn't the 70's or 80's anymore we are not getting a Galvin or a Haas we are not a destination club we do not have the financial power of the bigger clubs and we need to understand that.
We do not get big fish anymore it doesn't mean we can't be competitive but we should be real we are not signing a player that a big club wants that's a fact.
I agree 100% with this. When you look at our actual and quite successful recruiting pattern over the last handful of years it's been: promising young guys who might be NRL about 2027 with any luck; players who are good or at least promising but badly need a second or third chance; and warhorses who we think still have a bit to give. But our next acquisition is the game's next biggest name? I don't think so: if young Galvin has brains he will sign at a glamour club for $1 million per year (which is highly likely what DCE has done).

Putting aside whether that sudden offer of 750k per year (was that it?) to DCE was proper or smart or not, why was it that amount? I suggest: because that is the absolute maximum we could afford. Andrew Johns made an interesting point in the SMH last few days: that a club can afford to have 3 $million players on the books but not 4. We've got our three, in Tom Jake and Haumole (or close enough that it makes no difference). No way we can afford a true headliner.

You clearly have never looked at the storm team then as all of papi, Hughes, Munster and grant are a 4 million dollar spine. They have stefano on 700-750k and Nelson on 800k

First post back on here for a few years. I wanted to check what the consensus was with DCE...
In my opinion, its a decision that works in our favour. We desperately need another prop, backrower and a hooker. Our squad is still off balance. It's harsh but I'd also be moving on from Croker in some kind of a reset to our squad. DCE at 37 next year with our current squad would not win a premiership, and without Paseka this year, I feel the ship has sailed this year.
Fogarty and Reynolds could both plug a hole for a year or 2 until Walsh and Large are ready but we won't win a comp unless we address the shortage of forwards and a quality #9.
Against popular opinion, I'd be getting Lodge back in our squad asap to replace Paseka. Without both of them, we just don't have enough punch up front to compete at the business end of the season.

Walsh looks a gun and so does Large, although I'm not sure Large is a playmaker (as yet) he has a way to go as a half. He looks a wealth of talent but I'm not sure as a half. Walsh looks like he could be anything in the future and I'd be doing all we can to ensure his progress into NRL in the next couple years and should be a 10 year Manly half.
Good to have you back

Whilst I agree with your assertions around what we need, the issue is DCE’s departure is not necessarily freeing up cap space. He’s currently on a reduced deal by comparison with his previous 8 year deal and we offered him 750k a season for the next two years, due to cap constraints. A player like Fogerty is reportedly on 650k at Canberra. That would free up 100k for a prop, an edge forward and a hooker!

I know it’s not that black and white and obviously Croker is not currently playing for free, so factor in his contract if he were to be shown the door. But still, we aren’t talking a war chest now that Daly’s gone, is my point. We upgraded Hoppa and there’s considerably money going into Olakau’atu, etc.

The only way we’ll strengthen other areas of the squad is if he we use our untried rookie halves. That’s what so disappointing about exploring external replacement options, I.e. they’re not going to come much cheaper than what we banked on DCE taking to stay, but you can bet they’ll be fair bit cheaper in terms of value added to our football team 😞

I agree, very smart if his motivation was to punish the fans and tarnish a 15 year legacy. Masterstroke 🙄
