The Actual 18th Team: Perth Bears

Just watched some of the press conference. Jeez, the press aren’t exactly the cheerleaders you want when starting up a new franchise in a league death zone. I thought the Sydney press was feral. Have to say though, on face value they are going to need big tax dollars to make this thing viable, let alone successful. The only successful NRL team outside traditional league areas is in Melbourne, and they are News funded. Big task to have a team playing an alien sport 4,000 kms from anyone that really cares. Is there a WA election between now and kick-off? The whole thing could get **** canned if the govt gets the heave ho.

Depends on how they run it really

These days the NRL covers the salary cap and even a touch more. If they get a decent deal in the TV rights then most clubs will be self funding before anything else happens

From memory one thing that killed the reds was the need to pay for the travel costs for all the teams that came over....I think this is now covered by the NRL

Wonder if the old bears supporters who came over to Manly will jump back on the Perth bears band wagon?

The Bears ....
We Married them
We screwed them
and then we left them
Now they are back again
Can they survive again ?
This is their very last chance

I guess so. Be interesting to see the economics and projected viewership etc for a theoretical breakeven over there. The WA press seem a long way from convinced it is a good use of taxpayers funds.

Horrible decision we don't have enough players now yet we are blindly adding two teams. Some crap players going to get massive money. Vlandys has lost me in the press conference talking about sharing players with the western force wow that will do me.

Part of the problem that day was ex-Bear prop Martin Bella (by then at Manly) bagging Norths credentials prior to the game. Giving the latter something to prove. Well done Marty, you ****wit. I don’t think he was too popular with his Manly teammates afterwards.

Billy Moore was about to join Manly earlier in his career, before changing his mind and joining the Bears instead. He seems to have had a chip on his shoulder (about Manly) ever since.
He was with the Bears already, Graeme Lowe signed him up to join us in '93, but he had a change of heart and decided to stay at Norths, and be a loser still.

Good luck to em, I think they'll go okay.

Good to have the Bears back.

Regarding players, always plenty to go around.

Geez, the oxygen on the plane flight over must have been compromised resulting in this, how can I say this without being rude, "novel code-sharing idea".

I am aware in the Vatican City, many Catholics are waiting to see white smoke show emerge from the Sistine Chapel chimney, however, some of that "white smoke" may also be coming out of NRL HQ after reading that article.

It has all the hallmarks of an idea concocted by Kramer and Newman, and they had some funny ideas

Just think about this for a second my beloved brothers and sisters of silvertails.
In the 26 years the bad news bears have been out of the NRL. Our mighty club has managed to win the same number of premierships the bears could win in their 101 seasons in the main competition. What **** club they were, they are and always will be.
In our shadows since 1947 bearscum.
