Former Great Britain captain Ellery Hanley on Friday savaged the quality of domestic rugby league in England and said until it was up to scratch the national team would continue to fail against Australia.

Ellery had just realized something the rest of us have known for years. Maybe he is still feeling the effects of that Terry Lamb forearm.

Next thing we'll read that NZ rugby is of a higher standard than the Australian variety. Who would have thought it?

Yes, or that teams go out to try and win every week. Massive news.

It's going to be interesting in a few years time many of the European clubs will be going the Leeds and Wigan route (home grown, with bare minimum imports)

Hull FC from next season is an example.

What Ellery has stated is probably the reason why so many clubs send there academy side here to Aus. and a few players get selected to stay here

Leeds do have a good juniors system in place.

they can be our sister club

they give us their best juniors. we give them a tan 🙂

The original story (which this was lifted from) was Hanley explaining that England as a national side would not surpass the Australian national side in his lifetime (say, 50 years). His reason for that was the low quality of the Super League. I don't think it's just suddenly dawned on him that the Super League is inferior to the NRL!!

While there is some good Yorkshire boys coming through its the Lancashire boys in Saints or Wigan that'd toughen our juniors up.
