Stripping the ball and the ref

It seems that stripping the ball isn't going to be called this year.

So let's study Beau Scott's technique instead of whinging about his obviously deceptive play.

In his first strip on Marty he was holding the ball away from Marty's body. He was also looking away from the ball (very important). He knew full well where the ball was and that it would come free ...

We need to stop playing clean football and learn from grubs like Scott.

We also need to look at how our captain can put more pressure on the ref like a Cam Smith. The first mistake the ref made should have been jumped on hard to make sure he doesn't make any more.

It was almost like Parra had 18 players but it's not the ref's fault! He was rubbish yes and should not ref first grade again but he needed guidance.

DCE should spend time off the paddock listening to audio of how Smith puts referees in their place. The bonus for him is that he is untouchable NRL royalty like GI and Thurston. But DCE can learn! More time on footy shows and hopefully a Qld jersey ??

Has nothing to do with the Ref being son of a former Parra Legend either. He should not ref Parra again.

Unfortunately, it's not something DCE can 'learn'. There are, as you alluded to, certain players and teams who are untouchable. Look at the way Thurston speaks to officials when he's frustrated - no sanction, when other players would be marched ten, sin binned and suspended. Smith consistently approaches referees during the game, at times when he's supposedly not 'allowed' to, and gets away with it - other captains are told "go away, you can't talk to me".

Killer was a very good captain, savvy at picking up on referee errors and bias, but he was repeatedly disrespected and shouted down by them. He wasn't one of the 'chosen few', nor is DCE - and because of the club he plays for and the character assassination that's already taken place, he won't ever be.

How was that penalty that he blew then apologized for it. I think gutho scored In the ensuing set might be wrong tho. That's amateur hour at it's best.

The thing I've noticed is what the refs call, often depends on where the ball is. We carried the ball up high, often at shoulder height / keeping the offload an option. When it is carried high and you have three working in unison in the tackle, as parra did all day, the ball is alot easier to "come free", and in the ref's mind it looks like a loose carry so they get away with stripping it more times than not. At the same time when you get three in the tackle, you can force the ball up higher making it look like player is trying to offload.

Very much a tactic to take advantage of the rules where it is a very gray area and where ref has to make a split second decision. I think this is something where Captains challenge can help. You don't want to go to the video for everything, but a player will know pretty well when it is worth using a challenge on calls like this.

Carry the ball low and tight, you close the offload door more often than not, but in the refs mind you aren't looking to get the ball away so chances of earning a penalty are higher. Something coaches need to identify players like Scott who are great at getting away with it and not give them the chance.

Agree and that would address half of the drops but the other obvious indicator that was missed 3 times was when a parra arm flings out of the ruck and the ball follows at speed after first collision its a strip 99 times out of 100.

Agreed, but as you said, a number of times it was the tacklers actually forcing the ball-carrying arm upwards that made it appear as if the player was looking for an offload when Scott stripped it.

There was a really obvious one (I think on Brenton Lawrence) where he was actually fighting to keep his arm down, lo and behold they got it up high and Scott raked his arm down over the ball as they were falling to the ground and forced it loose.

Obviously that's the new trick the cheats have been practicing this pre-season.

There is no way a Parramatta person should be allowed to referee them. The ref did not cost us the game yesterday I make that clear but the NRL really need to be careful about this.
