GIBBS WALKS AFTER REQUEST IGNORED

AUSTRALIA’s most experienced sports doctor has quit Manly in a huge off-season blow.

We revealed this year Nathan Gibbs had been at odds with Manly’s head of high performance Don Singe and coach Des Hasler over the workload and treatment of players. At the time Sea Eagles stars Jake Trbojevic (hip), Josh Schuster (calf), Curtis Sironen (knee) and Cade Cust (hamstring) had all succumbed to injuries at training.

Gibbs has been involved in sports medicine for more than 35 years with NRL clubs, the Kangaroos, NSW Blues and Sydney Swans. He could not be contacted for comment.

Manly’s highly regarded head physio James Rahme has also quit the club to join GWS Giants in the AFL. Rahme had played a crucial role in helping superstar fullback Tom Trbojevic recover from his hamstring issues and the weekly management of the injury.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Gibbs recently asked Hasler to make staff changes on his high performance unit. The request was ignored … and so he quit.

As the kids today say,Meh.The club has won premierships without Gibbs and Rahme and most clubs have a change of doctor and physio every few years anyway.No doubt the NewsCorp crew will make a bigger deal out of it than it really is.Not sure the Rahme rap for TomT’s recovery has any reverence given he was there the last couple of years when he got injured.I suspect the main reason for the story is for Rothfield to puff his minimal chest out for getting a story right

Agreed. Not saying they aren’t a loss, particularly Gibbs, however Tom’s recovery was less to do with Rahme and more to do with the specialists from ACU in Victoria whom put together his program.
 
Nathan Gibbs has been at manly on and off for about 20 years I think. We had Dr Cross and others like luke Inman for a while over the period. Pity, but there will be another sports doctor out there.

Nathan Gibbs was on Bob Fulton’s staff through the 90’s.I could be wrong but I’m not sure Gibbs came up to QLD when they all moved up

On the surface of it, this seems like an extremely dumb move by the club. Losing Gibbs particularly. It was clearly a power struggle between Gibbs and Singe, over player workload and treatment as mentioned in the article. Unfortunately, the wrong person (Singe) has won that battle. It may well cost us next season.

Really?? Gibbs is more important to our success than Donny Singe? You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Gibbs is a doctor and quite an old doctor at that, Singe is a multiple premiership winning strength and conditioning coach. I know who I would rather have.
 
Its not the end of the world, I think the media are creating a conspiracy where there are none. Des would not lose people he wanted to keep, he has always been a master at assembling the best backroom team and I am sure he will already have the best replacements shortlisted. Remember Rahme has presided over our last couple of seasons where players were injured more often than when they played, He may have been as much a part of the problem with Toms ham string issues as much as he was part of the solution, the club looked elswhere to solve the problem which says a lot. I am not convinced Rahme is as good as some would like to believe. As for Nathan Gibbs very sorry to see him go after such a ling association with the club, but having a doctor who is at loggerheads with the coach and high performance staff is not a good situation, so there would be no harm in bringing in a younger doctor who is on top of the current sports science. I wish them both well.

Singe is a strength and conditioning coach. Gibbs has a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery. He is also a Sports Medicine Specialist. Gibbs specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries associated with physical activity.

It is the appropriate prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries that potentially worries me for next season with Gibbs gone. Yes we will get another Sports Doctor for 2022. It will be interesting to see how strong their influence will be on the above. It will definitely be less then Gibbs had this season. It bothers me that we had so many injuries to key players at training this year. Just remember that Gibbs has been recognised as the best in this field.

Singe is a strength and conditioning coach. Only an idiot would try and compare them, and then claim one is more important than the other. Essentially they perform two completely different functions. Hope this helps.

Exactly. I’ve been with my GP for 20 years. I was one of his first patients. The thing that has always impressed me is he is a machine.….as in he never stops learning and staying on the cutting edge of science. As he has said to me many times, it’s a 12 month cycle with medicine….sometimes shorter. And you have to keep going to conferences, lectures, to keep up with science.
I don’t think Dessie would let Dr Gibbs walk if he didn’t have some young medical machine in mind.

Don't get me wrong I think very highly of Gibbs, I took issue with the fact you said the wrong person was kept & that Des should have punted Donny Singe to keep Gibbs happy. Maybe I read your sentiment wrong but I think that a proven premiership winning Strength and Conditioning coach is harder to replace in a club than a Doctor, albeit a very respected and talented Rugby League Doctor. My point was that medical staff are extremely important to stability of a roster but Strength and Conditioning trainers are more of an impact on winning and losing week to week, therfore I would pick Donny. Besides I don't believe that this scenario took place at all, I think Gibbs is far too professional to demand a colleagues sacking. Sounds like a Rothfield special, which i reckon was probably fed to him by a certain person that loves to make out they are best mates with all the new young players and thinks they are somehow have inside knowledge, but are actually nobody's. Apologies if I took you up wrong mate.
