So far off the pace

Garrick is in the firing line for the baggers on here until someone comes up mate. I really cannot think of anyone that has signed for us lately that hasn’t been lambasted by some in here coaches & players alike. Not good enough, too old, too slow, another clubs discard, can’t defend, can’t tackle, useless blah blah blah. Yawn zzzzzzzzzz! All these experts probably have never held a rugby league ball in their hands. Experts who think they know the intricacies of coaching…….wonder why they’re not 1st Grade coaches?
There is more than 18 of us, so some of us have missed out.

Jeez this thread is heavy going , maybe a poll is better

Garrick is great
Garrick is ****

Or something like that , simples really
Garrick is great winger.
He's still learning playing centre.
Do we now have better options at centre (i.e. Talau and / or Hopoate)?

Guess that's the question. Is he a good player? Absolutely!

People make comments on what they observe during the season, in my opinion it’s all warranted.

Sorry to bang on about Gus again but he is very vocal talking about the stats most clubs use are a very different to what the public see / use
Each club would have those specific , player by player stats as aren’t they “ wired up “ , if so he’s probably right.

Very much so

It is the same in football (soccer) where the stats we look at are so very different from the ones that you use when you coach

Yeah I thought as much , they’d only release some to the broadcasters

Well the stats can show in soccer Liverpool 4 shots vs Man Utd 16 shots and Liverpool Win the game 3 - 1 ..... same as Rugby League where a team can have 55% possession and makes 7 linebreaks to 4 and loses 26 - 10 .....
Stats refleft specific factors, but have nothing to do with the energy, contact, work ethic, desire and determination, resilience and all the Real factors that decide the outcome of a game.
Personally I feel stats can be overrated, but an area that can still be used as a guide for area's of improvement and are still necessary.

That's why you have to broaden your stats, especially when discussing teams, because unlike players, there are many more factors involved. There are no absolutes, but stats will tend to give a clearer picture regarding how a team or player is faring. Comes down to probabilities. Your description actually gives information regarding problems one side has in utilizing their attacking options. Everything can be broken down to stats, but there is always the random element. All stats will do is assist in limiting the impact of those random elements by addressing what causes them.

Agree
But also the stats we see are often not the ones that the coaches etc care about

From what I know the stats they have are not for public consumption - I am not even sure where the stats we get come from!
Yeah I'd imagine a lot of off the ball factors are much more important to coaching staff. Things like distance travelled, average speed, line positioning, line speed, etc etc.

That's exactly my point mate - the stats don't win you games, they simply educate you on area's that can improve and showcase a story of 'how' you play the game....extra pressure ect will lead to potentially more penalties against, but cause more mistakes from the opposition and hurt their mindset.....which can't be shown on stats.
