Its pretty clear that there are 3 tiers in our current competition. Penrith and Melbourne on tier 1. Cronulla and the Roosters in tier 2 and the rest on tier 3. We really were the best of the rest. I expect that all sides outside of the tier 1 are aware that they are way off the pace and need to change the way they are approaching the game particularly training, selections and retention / recruitment. We need to change and improve otherwise it will be the same outcome the next few years. Melbourne and Penrith have the best systems. The excuse that Penrith's junior league makes impossible to compete with them is countered by Melbourne's consistency and success.

That's cool as we've beaten basically all those top two tiers.

Good performances early in the season don't put you on the same level as the top two sides who play with far more intensity and consistency throughout the year especially at the pointy end of the season.. We beat them both early in the season but come the pointy end of the season we were not in the same League. Cronulla and The Roosters each put 40 points on us. Then they got flogged by the top 2.

Yes 15 of the 17 are "Off the pace", but i am only concerned with Manly and I hope the other 15 teams have a website, that has a similar thread or they are in denial.....but on Silvertails I prefer to discuss Manly being "off the pace" and have some logical discussions and opinions on why.....without ppl being offended, because it's a fact and only clearer after this weeks finals.
Ummmm - ok...........not sure how what you've said differs in essence from what I said.

No team in the competition exists in a vacuum.

Keys to success - find out the benchmarks, how did they do it, find out how your organization (in this case Manly) can be even better, find out how to sustain that success in the face of competitive teams continually improving.....

By the way - who is offended? And why are they offended?

Offended and difference of opinion live on Silvertails and that's just how it is, so there's no big issue, it's just a footy site.... I think most would fit into these categories now and then including myself and maybe even you Bob.

I did like your middle content on this last post -

We have very little 2nd phase play, we surely must be close to last in offloads
Yes we are terrible at 2nd phase play and offloads. But we were also poor again in discipline and defense. Reality is when you look back now at our season it wasn't near good enough considering the caliber of players we have. . We lost several games which should never have. We scraped into the 8 by 1 and a half wins. We threw up another horrendous defensive performance against the rorters in the final. Does anyone really think that Seibold can improve on this year. I doubt it we are still miles away from the top 4 teams.

Really would like to see a bit of imagination at 13 in the pre season preparation and trials with the likes of Navale and even Talau given some consideration there .
Really can not see much more happening there in an improved sense with Jake and Brown interchanging there again on a regular basis .
Though a bit restricted with Brown playing in any other position but in the current circumstances , can still warrant a bench spot if his form can hold up sufficiently
Hopefully a bit more agility in defence with the likes of Burbo on an edge or from a few of the other bigger framed guys in the forward line up .
Bateman could certainly add another dimension if he does eventually link up but appears no clear signals right now and who knows with the May speculation .
Obvious improvement or pickup needed in a few other critical areas ,
Have essentially got a quite talented and capable squad but just down slightly in a few key benchmark areas
.Fixable but not without some subtle changes in at least a couple of positions and on field application

Iknow ive said it before but we are a dangerous team trying to be consistent

The best teams are consistent and then they try to add danger

Our lack of investment in this style of footy and coach rotation has Manly continually trying to make the best of what we have rather than charter a course to competitive always, and grow

Seibs looks to be doing this but he is at the end of almost a decade of acceoted mediocrity in critical. RL disciplines, the movingparts we built our hopes on are clapped out and overused andi improvement and consistency still always remain on Toms shoulders despite having an electric backline. Despite its high voltage it seems only Tom can unlock there potential because our game is built around danger, as our engine goes to work on the edges and ignores the middle.

Tom should be making breaks up the middle off brooks and DCE craft in the middle., but they go to the soft options far too often. At least brooks gave himself options as a running threat but not enough

Its the only real consistency this team has . TOM TOM TOM TOM

Not miles away. In fact an average 174 metres away from Panthers, based on average run metres.

Feels miles away after Chooks put 40 on us to knock us out of the finals - but you're forgetting that was one of the most calamitous starts to a big game I can ever recall. (Probably only topped by a Test where Morley I think was sent off for the 1st tackle of the game)

In nearly all stats Manly is in the top 5-8. So yes need to improve to get top 4, but its not a quantum leap. (whatever that is, lol)

I too agree , whilst the naysayers and the like ripped into us all year in reality we aren’t far away from being top 4.

The games we lost being run down were more mental than anything , and yes I don’t look at that Chooks game as season defining , talk about a wild first 3 minutes which set up the Chooks for that win.

We just need a bit of steel & experience in the forwards so that when things get tough we don’t fall in a heap.

I also think that whilst Croker is a little champion it’s clear that he doesn’t offer too much in attack ( he defends like a champion ). Just the few games that young Simpkin played we looked better.

Seibold needs to make a hard decision , not sure he will but he does.

We are getting blown away by any half decent team through lack of pace through our middles. Our response to that?

30 year old Jazz Tevaga (next season)
33 year old Siua Taukei'aho (next season)

FMD it's the muppet show at Brooky's recruitment teams meeting - here's where they decided on Taukei'aho:

Are we really though ?

I’d consider Melbourne a half decent side, and 2 of the last 3 times we have played them, our pack has obliterated theirs

Dogs game prior to finals, they have the prototype pack of mobility that people are desiring, again they absolutely nailed them

Now I’m not saying you’re wrong mate, and we could do with 1-2 more of a different style, but there is more than 1 way to skin a cat and get results

I just really think a creative , fast dummy half #9 would unlock so much potential through the middle. We've gone 5 years since Api and Manase and we've not looked anywhere near being a true top 4 GF team. 2021 was just a Turbo aberation be we still got owned by the other top 4 teams. All the other successful teams during that period have something unexpected and creative out of the #9.

Honestly I would even take someone with good service, and nothing else. I didn't think Simpkin and Croker were too different, in most aspects, but the difference between the forwards running onto Simpkin's balls (that doesn't sound right I know) and running onto Crokers balls (guy can't catch a break) was night and day.

Overall there's been very little improvement in our style of play in both defence and attack since the demise of Tooves and I don't see much change coming in the near future either, very disappointing to say the least
