Sirengate....

Who cares. Garrick had time to stop his kick and start again, but he didn't.

If we did it at Brookie, we would all think it was hilarious.

Move on guys, it's a nothing story.

I still maintain that had the game been played at Brookie with any opposition kicker being 'distracted' by the siren going off ... the NRL would be fining Manly for it. No results would change because they can't actually do that, but you can bet good money that we'd cop a decent fine for it happening.

But do not ever expect anything to happen against a team based in western Sydney right now.

In saying all of that I do think this is much ado about nothing though. I actually agree with @XV-1 above me here. Reubs had plenty of time to pull out of it and re-set for the kick. It was disgraceful that the siren went off during his kick, but its not as if it went off as he was striking the ball. He was still in his run up with time to stop.

Sorta.....
I don't know the rules. Are you allowed to stop once you start and / or can the opposition run up and block the kick?

I'm guessing you can stop because times when it's windy and the ball falls over the ref blows the ole whistle and the process starts over (ref could have done that here I guess).

But it's harder to pull out than you think (perverts). You're so focused and you've practised so many times that it's almost muscle memory.

Ever played tennis.. gone to serve, throw the ball up and it's not perfect but you go through with the serve anyway? It's a fault and you think 'why did I hit that?'

No? Well get outside , nerds!

As we've said, it's today's fish 'n chip paper and most importantly - screw you parra.

The opposition need to behind the goal line until after the ball is kicked, or it is a penalty from in front of the posts.

Thank you! I guess the rule of running and trying to charge down the kick (after the kicker starts to move in) changed in the 1990's or earlier. lol...wah

AFAIK that is still the rule if it is a penalty goal attempt, but never for a conversion attempt. Defending team were to hold 10M until the ball is struck. Or was that in the 5M days?

I don't recall defenders being allowed to be offside until the ball was kicked. My memory ain't as good as it once was.

there's more than one type of kick at goal? sheesh what is this game??

You're right of course. I think I should stop here before I fall down that rabbit hole.

A couple of weeks ago when Garrick was lining up another conversion I saw the opposition's water guy / trainer... someone that's allowed to run on the field... walk right up by him in his line of sight and for a second I thought he was going to walk between garrick and the ball!

It's childish and annoying and a 5k fine for clubs when it happens is appropriate.

You can stop and re-start your run up (e.g. if the ball falls off the tee, an object is thrown from the crowd etc).

Unlike union where players can rush the kicker during a conversion, that isn't allowed in league for any set goal kick. Also, opposition players must either stand behind the try line for a try conversion (and not break that line until the kick has taken place) or be at least 10 metres back for penalty kicks. Players can not make a deliberate moving physical distraction, but they can stand still in front of the kicker (10 metres back of course) with their arms up like someone standing the mark in Aussie rules, or looking at the posts like Ray Price used to do in-case the ball hit the post and bounced back into play.

Having been a goal kicker when I played back in the 90s, I can assure you its easier to stop your run up once you've started it than you think. As much as I think it was disgraceful what happened at halftime on Sunday, I still think Reubs had time to stop and re-set for the kick. Ultimately it didn't matter in the win-loss stakes because we won. But its 2 points we didn't get in the for and against, and 2 personal points he didn't score.. And, pardon the pun, a lower kicking percentage ... to boot.

I didn't kick much, but we had a coach who would make noise and even play music as we practiced so we could learn to shut everything out and focus on the ball/trajectory.
It didn't help me as I was never a sharp shooter.

I think that is only a rugby union thing. In league you have to stay behind the goal line, not under the posts. For penalty goals I think you have to stay 10 m away.

Theoretically if the opposition put the kicker off, the ref can let the kicker have another go.

I would think the official timing and siren would be run by the NRL .. not the home team ..

Still in the rules that you can drop kick a penalty goal. No one has even attempted it since the 1970s, possibly died out earlier when field goals went out of fashion when they went from 2 points to 1. I was surprised someone like Jamie Soward never used this option, as he always seemed better at drops than place kicks.

Next time we get one in front dce should just do it quickly.

The moral of the this Thread ...

Hickory, dickory, dock.
The Eels tried to screw around with the clock.
The Eagles struck once,
The Eels came crashing down,
Hickory, dickory, dock.

Brings back memories of Ridgey’s place kicks for touch. Had never seen it before and have never seen it again.
