Siosiua Taukeiaho

And the side with the youngest pack in the NRL just won the spoon three times in a row.
How does that relate to us though? We comparing ourselves to The Tigers? That is the so left field, unnecessary comparison I don't know where to begin. We need to break into the top 4, and become contenders. Can we compare to Panthers, Storm or someone else please?

We need a better mix of forwards. Doesn't mean the one's we have aren't good or great. Just means the balance is off, hence the 10-11th placed finish on average for 11 years now.

@Ryan I agree with your sentiments about Taukeiaho probably not setting the world on fire, but just about every team needs that "young, bustling, leg-speed, etc" prop that just isn't out there. What just about every team has done, (including the Storm through Blore,) is try to make incremental improvements within players and the general playing group, instead of burning the house down.

We didn't make significant pack changes between 2023 and 2024, and yet we went from being ranked 12th in PCM's in 2023, to 7th. You could tell that our forward pack in general improved. Aloiai until his injury against the Roosters, was playing consistently as the good leg-speed modern prop, Paseka was playing ~50 minutes, and Bullemor, Waddell, and Brown were all effective off the bench in similar molds. The only three "plodders" regularly in first grade imo were Lodge, Jake, and Sipley.

Coaching changes, and importantly, the addition of Brown and his competitiveness to the pack, helped improve them from within. However, just as we added a good on-field influence in Brown, and off-field in Woods, we kept a toxic one in Lodge. Lodge and Woods have effectively been replaced by Taukeiaho now, and I think he will bring better overall results than either of those two. The gross misconduct he committed overseas was going to a music festival, and he seems pretty regretful about how things went over there. Compare that to Lodge doing a great imitation of the CCP & 1989 by shoving New York under the carpet.

We only have one other premiership winner, and I don't think DCE is telling the props how to become premiership standard anytime soon. Taukeiaho is more recent, and he did it in one of the best systems in the comp. He may only play well early in the season, but that's all he has to do, in order to influence the rest of the pack to improve for the rest of the season. I also see him as being a more helpful influence to the younger forwards than Woods, and I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Navale or Patolo taking his spot approaching finals. Woods was a plodder for the last five years. Taukeiaho was still playing in finals, and at a high level, just two years ago. His apparent fitness reflects his attitude. Some of the unfit younger forwards, who need to improve their fitness to take the next step, such as Laiafi and Navale, will benefit from his presence.

On Jake, he needs to be fitter. He isn't a permanent plodder, and I think the concussed Roosters game he played, has somewhat distorted recent memory of his performances. Flashback to Round 6, where he ran for 160m in a MOM performance. He looks marginally slimmer, so I suspect they're having him reduce his size to accommodate for his slowing leg speed. Sipley is on the last year of his deal, and will probably retire or something. Jake is NSW captain for a reason. We need him in the 17.

All makes sense mate. I will say there were some very high end forwards that moved clubs though. Ones that make a huge difference: Addin Fonua-Blake James Fisher Harris and many others. That guy from The Tigers joining The Storm (forget his name). From the outside looking in, whether it being that we are cap strapped (bear in mind we are paying a million bucks to Schuster over the next 3 years), Jake is on almost a mill etc, or just poor acquisitions, we keep missing out on those big name players.

I have no sympathy for the club, when people say they are strapped by the cap. It's our own fault. We've made these huge decisions on huge contracts, and the best it's landed us in recent years is 7th.

Anyways, I get what you're saying. But as a group, out forwards are old, slow, and very injury prone (or suspension prone) - think Brown, Paseka, Burbo, Aloiai and Sipley - who have all had substantial injury / suspension absences - then add Taukeiaho (10 games in 2 years and over 33 next season).

The proof will be in the pudding. We've extended Siebold now. Our contracts are mostly multi year, I have no idea why (Brown, Waddell & many others). So this may be the best of what we get for quite some time..

A replacement for Lodge /Woods , experienced , winning mentality, a Mentor , All sounds good
My opinion is that Manly would be better suited bringing along a younger forward to give more game time , experience is already there , Jake ,Josh , Brown
Manly need younger , stronger , faster forwards with what they have now

The pack doesn’t need a big overhaul to ‘young & faster’ players, 1 change at lock could make all the difference for us - let’s look at the best team for 95% of the season this year Melbourne Storm. Nelson, Josh King, Christian Welch & kamakamica are hardly mobile front rowers. They have 1 ‘fast & mobile’ front rower come of the bench in Alec Macdonald as we do with Bullemor. Blore & Katoa are also similar in mobility to our 2nd rowers this season. The big difference in my opinion is while their lock Loirero isn’t an elite player he still has good leg speed & ball skills. Navale could make a big difference to this team along with a attacking threat at hooker (Simpkin) to put us in top 4 contention

I’ve been banging on for ages

More creative , mobile 9, maybe this is a combo of Frog 1-20 minutes , Simpkin 21-60 minutes , Frog 61-80

And Jurbo to Prop rotation playing 50/60 minutes

Lock, need to find one from within

I have no sympathy for the club, when people say they are strapped by the cap. It's our own fault.
People are not strapped by any cap
They are limited by their own inabilities
and they are accountable for their own circumstances
If These people had any sympathy for the club
They would step down and give other more competent people an opportunity to make the club more competitive
This is after all a results oriented business
Famous last words .....

Happy New Year Ryan

Playing only limited footy the past couple of seasons could have two factors associated with this.
His body is just not holding up too well and a bit prone to injury or the extended time off the field has allowed for a bit of general healing and sure that he would still have some good footy and performance ability if again his general fitness can be on a more positive note.
Going to need a good work rate in the middle regardless so if again he can measure up all round , all good
If he's going well in pre season fitness and passing all the various bar levels expected of him at training, can't see why he wont succede on the field come early March.

From the reading I did about his injury troubles it sounds like the big issue was trying to play through a foot injury that really needed surgery. He got that surgery last year so hopefully he will come good.
