Well then the idea of a vote is truly redundant .........................as the only ones voting are "those currently in the forum and aged 40 and above". ( a hint of disdain in the way that has been worded me thinks)

Some well documented theories to implementing change for customers;

1. Ask customers if they want a change, if they say no and you still change it, it creates resentment and customer loss

2. Just change it, you get some post change complaints but most customers will accept it, even begrudgingly (unless the change is too dramatic)

Strategy 2 is probably the smarter one when you already know or have decided what you are going to do.

R&D requires asking the "customers" though this is a community and I don't see anyone as customers. The vote was very useful and the discussion even more so as it has helped me shape the idea better and to understand its effect on the audience, It has also helped to clarify the demographic that is currently here.

All very useful as it saves me a lot of wholesale work and allows me to instead shape out a new feature without having to change the old and therefore catering for a wider overall market.

Change is inevitably coming anyway. There is a new version of the software we use coming out shortly and this version will be EOL shortly after that, meaning to stay secure and fit for purpose we will have to change to that version. With that will come a refactoring of several tools and the design of the site. For the most part the design of the forums will look the same but with this general theme being about 3 years old now and the new version, some form of change will have to happen.

I would have thought the prevailing demographic was already available to you given you have access to posters personal details?

Lets be honest...............the vote was thrown out there because you probably did not expect it go overwhelmingly NO.

I look forward to the changes.............the bitching about them will at least create some new threads!!

Revisiting this as I crystalize the idea of a softer implementation of this.

It may surprise many of you to know that the structure and setup of this is already in place. If you look under the HOME menu, there is "recent activity" and "New Posts" and under the Forums menu there is "Watched Threads", "New Posts" and "Spy"

All of this works much like social media sites in surfacing information that you may be interested in.

What I am talking about doing is first Keeping the forums intact. You will still be able to post and interact with the forums exactly as you do now, that view won't go away.

Then I am planning on taking all of the above and moving them to a single page and formatting it in a way that is similar to the way you might see posts on Facebook, so that you can read the post and comment inline. I would then further enhance that page by building out specific algorithms that let you configure and personalise that page, so for instance you might choose to follow someone and therefore when that person makes a reply to a thread, a new thread etc, it will be bumped to the top of your "Feed" page.

The idea is that it make posting easier, and personalizes your experience. Overall it should enhance the experience for many without taking away the current experience for others who prefer traditional forums.

Additionally I am planning on removing the front page as it now stands in place of a feed page and encouraging people to post the link to articles as they do on Facebook and allow rapid discussion of that.

So for most of you there will be no difference, but for new users and for those who prefer that it should majorly enhance the way in which you interact with Silvertails.

I just love it when you talk dirty!!

Meaning, WTF did that mean?

Don’t worry , I’ll work it out!

No the vote was there to get a snap opinion, however it wasn't binding, the polling tool is often a good way to get a thread and conversation started.

And no I don't have access to anyone's personal information, less than 5% of members put their birthdate in there and it isn't a mandatory field. As much as I know about most of the people is their forum name and if I wanted to check, their email, which tells me absolutely nothing. I can access IP addresses but again that tells me nothing but a vague location.

You make a lot of assumptions

Indeed I do...............my bad!

Way too much time on my hands, I'll pull my head in and go back to the Taylor Swift forum!

So much for the poll...

To be fair I am sure someone could dig up a similar thread the last time the look and feel was updated.

Dan does a great job in future proofing the site by adding new features etc...I mean have you looked at other support sites? I am all for change especially if it manages to engage more supporters who have not found their way here

Well the poll has been taken note of specifically by the fact rather than moving to a purely feed based system, I have changed the idea to now keep existing format and add additional feature and functionality, so not really sure how you could read that as the poll being ignored.

Just as long as you don’t delete my stats to zero!!

I’d hate to be a newbie again.

It is how it is #Dan,if you change things then you risk alienating the solid base who pay the bills and keep things stable,if you want to change things up then you may get more people involved and maybe increase revenue depending on how you organize it.The NRL are not good at trying to upscale and attract newbies but it depends on what your own goals are.....As long as you keep the trolls out of the site(they are here no matter what, but the need to keep people out at less than a keystroke without membership is important).A facebook site option where people seem to feel a little bit more irrelevant and a bit more bold may attract more revenue but may lose the integrity and the bond that is still loosely here now....I get the point about about maybe tightening people and groups who have closer social bonds....e.g people who get to see a game in NZ or Tas. (pre season etc....)who can get together and discuss..... It could even end up strengthening and increasing membership numbers(I have suggestions but unless there are serious intentions I would not discuss the potential to increase membership numbers by many thousands...)

I’m really struggling with how my idea is being misconceived.

I need to be clear “a Facebook site” is not the idea.

The idea is in extending the current capabilities, without removing current capabilities
To enhance and personalise the experience for each user more.

Rather than take a hit and miss and random content, which you’ll still be able to do, you’ll have the ability to be presented with more targeted information that you have indicated you have a preference for.

So, say you really like 10 posts of what poster x has said, then on a page that you choose to go to, you will be presented with more content from poster X and related content around them, you can then easily communicate and contribute inline.
If you decide you don’t like their content as much or anymore you can reduce the exposure to that content.

People fear change but I can’t be more clear in saying what I’m proposing will not erase the current experience it will only add another avenue of production and consumption
