Silver Lining

Too many errors in the first half trying to play footy without Tommy, but it was very pleasing see the shift the in gameplan in the 2nd half, and grind our way to a tough win.

I haven't checked the stats, but it felt like an almost error free in the 2nd 40 as well playing a grinding style.

Well coached imo to pivot at halftime.
That's it! 60% completions in the first half and 2nd half must have been up around 90%. I didn't like Chez's intercept with 1 minutes to go and Funa should have just taken the tackle after his pass from Taupau which led to his break, they had NO defenders and we would have scored the next tackle. Final bad mistake was Schuster lying all over the player with 10 seconds to go. This is such a stupid idea and needs to stop! The opposition get a penalty, you go to sin bin and they get a shot at a 2 point field goal, I'd imagine Cleary or Reynolds nail that field goal and we would have lost. Apart from that the 2nd hf was outstanding but some things to learn for the semis.

No Tom and clawed back from 12 - 0 down, gritty and resilient and showed desire the side really wants to have a crack and these ugly wins can help shape the season.
Had a few dud calls and lets be honest, made it hard on ourselves with some poor ball control at times.
Garrick was good at the back and I'm gunna give this kid credit for his attitude, lets face it - he is a far better winger than fullback but last night he got smashed on a few occasions returning the ball...but guess who had his hand up to make the 3rd carry out of ugly field position - Garrick....and he did it with full heart and commitment - wins my admiration all day.
Also Jake T - some of the best tackles seen in 2021 and a few creating turnovers - 1 a try...Jake is the heartbeat of the side - make no mistake about that...
Big Guoc terrorised them on that right edge scoring 2 tries (1 dudded by officials), but generally steamrolled that edge all night and Wighton and friends will have nightmares for the next week - great controlled aggression also - becoming a serious X factor player....
Suli who copped plenty of flak, some deserved, made some absolutely blockbusting runs and the time he lost the ball was a blatent late strip that again...should have been a Manly penalty...anyways great power game and gave Manly a heartbeat when struggling with lack of attacking flair - he decided to run "straight thru em"...credit where due - done well and THAT Canberra try on his edge was on Funa, Suli had his centre covered - so well played to him.
The halves leadership was no great surprise, but DCE was pretty level headed throughout and as usual, stopped many Canberra raids with big defensive plays.
His partner in crime Foz was Super, many direct slicing runs and looked dangerous ball in hand and really stood up when it counted....
Theres plenty more Positives also - so what were the thoughts ??

86/91 tackle efficiency too for Jake and Croker combined which is a great effort in the middle against a big Canberra pack.

I’m actually glad that we won a game with such a flat performance. Beating the Eels who were down and out with touch footy was great but it’s not championship quality stuff.

to turn up flat and play a desperate Raiders who had all the momentum and play that scrappy style that we hate, was truly memorable. I’m ecstatic after that win. We lose that game every other day of the week.

we learned to win ugly tonight..to roll the sleeves up and win off the back of desire and rugged defence...to play with patience and not try to chase points through stupid shifts...

that’s one of our best wins of the year IMO.
Great post snake and totally agree. Again tho just highlights the difference in quality to us and the other good sides v the 7,8 and lower. We still had 4 of our top 17 out including our best player, best front rower, best defensive Centre. Very happy to get the win and knock those faders out!

They’ll learn a lot more from this game and the Melbourne game than they did v the Eels.

100% agree, our game is based on getting a roll on and getting the momentum going, and the referee completely negated that with an extremely skinny 10 and the slowest ruck of the year. We had to find a different way to get it done, and we did. It suited Canberra perfectly as they were just there for 1 outs and a kick, the most dour footy I’ve seen all year

I’ll give that win to Taupau, when he came back on he created that roll for us and onto the front foot and Canberra couldn’t hang with it
I actually think it was more Aloiai. He took the hard hit ups to get us out of trouble when our backs were struggling to make any ground. Not to discount Marty’s effort though.

Coming back from 12 nil down after a frustrating first half, full of errors and questionable refereeing decisions, is a massive silver lining for me. At no stage of the game did I feel that Manly didn't have the capacity to come back and win the game though. We demonstrated resilience, guts and heart to win. Arguably the Raiders wanted this game much more then us. We are two games out from securing 4th spot. South's will definitely beat the Roosters. Bennett will be stuck into them this week about their fade out against the Panthers. If we can finally put our best team on the park, I am quietly confident we will compete very strongly against the Storm. With a bit of luck and 50/50 refereeing decisions we might even win that game. Last night was the ugly win we needed. More positives than negatives for me. Go Manly.

I think last night should of silenced the last of the JakeT doubters. His defence and leadership was immense

Team cut out the errors in the 2nd 1/2 and got on top
Need to cut out the basic errors for the full 80
Can win without Tom , but not by big margins if they don't make the errors and complete there sets

We got away with a game we had to win. Somehow. Like Warriors round 5.
With Tom, a threat to anyone. Without Tom, midtable mediocre.

Canberra beat us last time without tom, i kind of expected a loss. The fact we won shows manly has improved.
Also without Jake, DCE and Josh, and the faders missed Jack and Pap, our possesion and completions were terrible last game just like last nights 1st half.
