I don’t blame players for wanting to play rep footy…..as a player it’s the highest honour, why wouldn’t they want to play…..

I can't remember the last team that played or won a Grand final with NO rep players in the team ... might have been one ... but I can't remember it ... I hope we get 10 players selected.

You’re probably right about reaching the pinnacle of our sport without rep players…….but seriously we will be lucky if any of our current squad earn a call up this year…..Tom and Daly may get selected, but having earned it is a different matter.

Who’s paying his $1m salary? NSWRL or Manly. After the amount of time he’s spent on the sidelines surely Manly becomes a priority? Of course it’s an honour to play reps but FMD how many games has Trbo missed for Manly thru injury & having to stand down. Maybe the NRL should allow clubs to not pay players salaries for the period if selected for reps? NRL or NSWRL can pay. Howz it fair on Manly that they pay him for not playing during that time plus he gets paid for representing! I remember the time players played for state & country out of pride & ambition not dollars! Sorry but Trbo owes Manly not the opposite!
You have a good point re who’s paying the rep players salary, thing is that applies to all clubs supplying players.

Maybe it’s time for the NRL to address that issue, how who knows, haven’t thought that deeply, but if a rep player suffers a season ending injury surely the balance of his cap should be granted back to the club to look at replacing him, similarly maybe some kind of offset to the clubs that have players in rep sides as they are playing the player as well, maybe a cap credit to be applied at the clubs discretion, have to think about that a little more, but the current situation definitely seems unfair and a distinct disadvantage to the clubs that provide the players.

There is an argument that they have earned it by past and recent performances in the arena ...

I couldn't find a current update to this ..

The NRL will allow clubs to sign replacement players for stars injured in representative games as soon as this year's State of Origin series in the latest salary cap shake-up.

In a move that would have allowed the Raiders to draft in cover for England star Josh Hodgson, who was hurt in last year's World Cup, clubs will now be compensated for long-term injuries suffered by their marquee men while on Test, Origin or All-Stars duty.

Compensation: Clubs could get salary cap relief for players injured during representative matches.

League Central will offer salary cap exemption on a dollar-for-dollar basis to players who will be sidelined for 12 weeks or more up to a value of $350,000 from next month when the Origin series begins in Melbourne.

Amidst a wave of lobbying from some clubs fearful of losing their biggest assets while they earn higher honours with little return, the NRL has tried to break down some of that resistance with its latest proposal.

The plan was presented to club bosses at Tuesday's chief executives conference in Sydney and will need to be signed off at the next Australian Rugby League Commission meeting on June 7.

It will be retrospectively applied for any long-term injuries suffered in Origin I the night before.

It seems a mere formality that the game's independent commissioners will tick off the move, which could have in theory provided the Cowboys with a replacement for Johnathan Thurston on their unlikely march to the NRL grand final last year.

The NRL will impose strict conditions on what injuries qualify for salary cap relief and will require medical evidence that a player didn't carry a pre-existing condition into a representative game before suffering a long-term injury.

But the Raiders could have had last summer to find a $350,000 hooking alternative to Hodgson, who ruptured his ACL playing for England in the World Cup, under the new scheme.

Maybe and that has always seemed to be a factor, but I don’t necessarily agree with that, if you won’t to win you need to pick the best side and that means the side should be predominantly selected on form, it’s a 3 game hit out, you can’t carry players on past performance, you’ve probably heard the caveat, past performance is not indicative of future performances, blah blah anyway.

Take the NSW side, last years edge forwards, Martin and Crichton, do you pick and stick? Or do you say Young is the form second rower and should be selected, (he probably will be in any case, even if it’s from the bench, although there’s a strong case to start him) Martin will be that player that gets the benefit of prior performances, for me Young has to come in on form, but he hasn’t exactly excelled there before, where as Angus has stepped up and done the job, so I guess it stands to reason that players have and will continue to be selected as you described, whether or not that applies to Tom and Daly we’ll see.

I’m Blue and sure about Loz’s appointment as coach, be interestING to see the make up our side this year, think we might see a few surprise selections.

I do recall after reading it, but those measure don’t really seem adequate and should be revised, any injury should be considered and match compensation should be looked at.

Having a 12 week requisite to an injury seems a little outrageous, given SOO is basically in the middle of the season, they may as well have said season ending, lot of grey area in all of this.

QLD made a pretty good case for sticking solid to players that perform at SOO level .. club form be buggered ..

Yes .. but my point is they do recognise the issue ..

Who’s paying his $1m salary? NSWRL or Manly
Neither - the NRL pays it.
Although he's a Manly employee.
Except when he's contracted to play for Qld.
(NSWRL probably pay NSW players, but again that money probably comes from NRL anyway)

They did, but they also had a golden run, with a pretty good group and not a lot of attractive alternatives, still going to say form should be a priority…..
