not every school needs buildings, NSBHS wouldnt have the space.  But governments should stop propping up private schools with funding support, especially those who dont need it.

The libs started it, just wish labor had have ended it already, not waited until 2013.

A builder told me today that he was not involved in the BER but he knew builders who were, and in his words they overcharged the government but it was ok because they were giving it back to the labor party anyway.

Lol, its ok to give someone government money now as long as they use it to prop up a political party, so that the circle can keep spinning. When I pointed out the fact that the money didn't come from the labor party but from tax payers he suggested it was all the same anyway.

Despite the claims of extravagant spending and debt, ours is very minor in comparison to other Western economies. However, don't let the facts spoil the rhetoric. It is ironic that the Libs have chosen the least economically literate of all their old front bench as their leader!!

Have a look at what the debts levels were of the other countries were before the GFC.  Most were between 50 and 80% of GDP before the crisis.  Ours was somewhere around 7%.  Now it is around 16% I believe which puts it at the top of most countries when calculating the percentage increase in debt level.

The fact that we had such low debt levels prior to the GFC and why we avoided a recession was largely due to the strong financial management of the country by the previous Howard government and not so much due to the reckless spending of the current government.

Maybe the current government should take notice of what the reserve bank governor is saying and cut down on their spending.  If they don't then expect interest rates to keep increasing while the reserve tried to slow the economy and inflation down.

The BER might be good for Kings and Knox but the average public school has received SFA from the BER.

Look around the public schools on the northern beaches and see what how little have received under the BER and how they compare to what the the private and catholic schools received under BER.

Most private schools have better toilet blocks than classroom buildings in state schools.  No doubt you teach in a private school and your kids attend private school as well.

The divide between the private schools and the public schools is huge and getting worse.  The government should spend money in such as away that all schools have equal facilities whether they are private or public.

By the sound of it there will be a lot of parents from private schools who will be voting for labor because of the benefits that they have received from the BER.  Probably updating their volvos at the same time
I have worked in a number of rich private schools and it has surprised me the number of parents who are swinging voters or who vote Labor. With nearly 50% of secondary students in NSW now attending private schools, that is probably not such a surprise. I work in a private school close to Mt Druitt/Rooty Hill and it is very Labor inclined.

Interestingly enough, my own kids go to a State School but with a very good and visible Labor member in a marginal seat, the schools in our local area have had significant spending.

In terms of the BER, independent schools managed the  building process themselves, in DET schools they had to do it through clumsy State planning procedures (and we probably agree on State Labor!!) I do know of lots of Northern Beaches schools that have received very good infrastructure though and if you look in NSW country, many have received their first new buildings since the 60s, all whilst keeping people employed!!

Labor has often acknowledge their dichotomy of support, that is the division of their base vote into inner city elites who support the party out of a sense of values based morality seated pseudo-socialism and the union workers who are more aspirational and support the party because of their environment, needs and the perspective that grants them.

The problem for Labor is appealing to both groups at the same time.

No the problem for Labor is how to pander to big business while paying lip service to principle and working class interests. The Liberals don’t even pretend, and for workers, the unemployed, pensioners etc  they would be a far worse option.
Future generations will look back at these times and marvel that we considered this system democratic.
