"Sam Burgess left for America this week armed with specialist’s advice and a decision to make.
There is every chance by this time next week, South Sydney’s captain will have announced his retirement due to a shoulder injury that has eaten away at the bone and his effectiveness.

News Corp understands Burgess held talks with medical specialists and Souths officials in recent days over his future and even those who have spent years waxing lyrical about his toughness are now questioning whether he can go on.

Burgess has been a warrior for Souths, and before that Bradford in Super League. Yet the longer the story of his shoulder has dragged on, the more likely it has become that he has played his last game of rugby league. Remarkably, at the age of 30 — he turns 31 next month — Burgess’s stellar career may be over.

His retirement will leave a huge hole at Souths, although Burgess will remain involved at the club in some capacity.

There are some at the Rabbitohs who believe he could eventually become a coach, following the same path that is expected to be travelled by his great mate James Graham.

In the interim, he is likely to perform a similar role to recently retired Greg Inglis and John Sutton. They will be auxiliary coaches next season, as well as mentors to the club’s emerging leaders.

Replacing Burgess on the field may be easier than it would appear, at least the version that played for Souths in 2019. Burgess had one of his most difficult seasons — he clashed with officialdom off the field and struggled to be the same force on it.

He appeared distracted and unsettled, his shoulder woes no doubt playing a part. Nevertheless, he remained a talismanic figure at one of the game’s most powerful clubs.

He has four years remaining on a deal that is due to pay him upwards of $4 million and provided Souths get some salary cap dispensation for his departure, they will be armed with a war chest and ready to swoop.

That contract, and the medical Burgess underwent prior to its signing, is expected to play a part in any application for cap dispensation. Rabbitohs head of football Shane Richardson is a sage operator, having already mounted a successful argument to have Inglis removed from their cap.
Burgess has carried a bad shoulder for several years now.
Burgess would free up further funds and plenty of them. Fellow Englishman Luke Thompson, a star at St Helens this year, is on their wishlist but he won’t be available until 2021. Regardless, Souths are an attractive club and Wayne Bennett still has the capacity to weave his recruiting magic when needed."

What an absolute joke this game is turning into. Its like the NRL are bending over backwards to make up for the vermin being kicked out of the comp years ago, but yet Manly still wont stick it to the NRL for screwing us with snake and Mattai

I actually agree that a player who sustains any sort of career ending injury should be paid out no matter when he signed or when it first occurred AND it shouldn't count against a team's cap. Also a player should choose to sign for unders anywhere irrespective of some notional value. It's pretty simple. So why the fuk does the nrl i.e Greensnot make all this so complicated. The guy is an incompetent goof. FFSake someone off this bald headed gimp.

Mickqld, all players get a full contract payout in cases like this, however if the injury is not a sudden catastrophic one just like the one Jharal Yow Yeh had, then that payout to the player HAS to be included in the salary cap.
However, Greenberg should be sacked for getting close to players, especially Inglis and Burgess, it then becomes a conflict of interest.
Players should only be allowed to play for "unders' in the final year of the game, not contract year, I have no problem that Marshall just wants to have one more year that the club didn't budget for.

'his shoulder woes no doubt playing a part" he has a history of shoulder problems no doubt brought on by all the grub shots he has pulled off over the years like on DCE
Anyway its been an ongoing issue hence there s/b no cap relief and souffs will just have to suck it up like what Manly had to with real champions Steve Matai and Brett Stewart
The RL world is watching Greenburg you sneakily got Ingliss thru the cap(has anyone seen the disclosure on that ?) and thru his drunk driving but I think there will be total outrage if you try the same dirty tricks with this grub who derserves nothing more than some new teeth and a head transplant
#getridofgreenburg
Go Manly

Except that outrage has gone out of fashion these days, in politics around the world and certainly in the NRL.
One more outrage? One more case of Greenberg's "consistency-is-overrated" ... yawn.
Outrage is being replaced by apathy and disenchantment. For NRL, whose roots and ongoing health are closely tied to tribal passions, that is a slow-tolling death knell.

For a few clubs rolling in cash, if you want to keep an ageing star such as Gasnier Inglis or Burgess, just sign them to a huge multi-year deal, so other clubs can't lure them away (or in the case of Watmough, in order to lure them away).
Never any realistic expectation they will play out all those years - yet they will be paid in full (wink wink) and the club can get around the salary cap by claiming a 'brand-new career-ending injury' (lol).
If the club is a bit more cash-strapped (or tight-arsed) then the player just retires in the old-fashioned way, doesn't fulfill the contract and so doesn't get paid (Lawrence, Elgey) or else gets paid but it counts on the cap (Matai, Snake).

Smells of outright corruption doesn’t it??

Put it this way, grey areas provide an opportunity for manipulation. And then we have to ask, so why does it always seem to be certain clubs who benefit?!! Souths lose Inglis but are allowed to get Roberts, now they may lose Burgess so they'll be allowed to pick up some other star? Seriously?
Manly lost Matai and Snake and had to settle for Brayden Williame and Matthew Wright!

For heavens sake, how hard can it be to set up a transparent process that fans can have a little faith in? The process should not only be fair, it should be plainly seen to be fair by any casual observer. It's not rocket science.

So if souffs can pull off another scam, maybe we should then sign Thompson for another 5yrs, for around $2.5m, pay him $150k for the first 2yrs, then he has some mysterious career ending injury and we pay him out, all salary cap exempt - how do you fancy our chances - not even slim, I would say

Shouldn't wack your wife. Guys, take note.

If you are referring to the AVO, wasn't that for an incident with the father in law?
My understanding is there was no suggestion at all he had assaulted the wife.
Unless you are talking about something else?

Pictures of young Sam partying in Mexico with girls on his arm and sitting on his shoulders published in the Tele today are .... how will I put this ..... dumb?

I would guess that any hope of a dignified reasonable divorce settlement just went Souff .....

Wow the media can beat up a story, and people continue to believe it !!!!

Sam wasn't partying and going wild lifting some bikini clad hottie on his shoulders, pictures are deceiving, we all know he went to America for specialist advice for his shoulder.

That poor Young woman happens to be his boner specialist, doing pre corrective measure test on his shoulder to make sure he was up for bone enhancement penetration. o_O

Give the guy a break he's had a "hard" year @;)
