I don't think NZ is all pure and magnificent in terms of a new horizon. They have their own issues over there with culture and unemployment. If it was so damned wonderful, there wouldn't be more NZer's living here than there.
I live in Auckland. It’s like most cities. There is gang life and the like. But (unless you sadly grow up as a child in that scene), we all have a choice who we associate with. I hope AFB and his family make wise decisions (and changes if needed) over here.

For everyone saying how bad a decision it was to let Api go.....

No one, and I do mean NO ONE knew what was going to subsequently happen with Fainu that would keep him off the field. We let Api go in good faith that we would be well covered at hooker with Manase Fainu. No one knew that he would be caught up in a stabbing. No one knew that it would be him who was charged with that stabbing and that he would be subsequently stood down indefinitely by the NRL. And no one knew that his shoulder would get infected after surgery that would physically rule him out for the season anyway.

Would have it been better had we kept Api? Of course it would. But at the back end of 2019 no one knew what would happen over the next 12 months. And I certainly don't know of any Soothsayer's who could have known.

Nostradamus didn't pick this happening.

I guess hindsight is a perfect thing isn't it. And its always perfect ... after the fact.

I would have thought the club would have learnt its lesson that you need at least two specialist hookers in your top 36. Api and Blade Runner combined brilliantly and to have them both in the 17 was I given.
Or so I thought!

That's the one thing we did wrong. We didn't have a cover in case something happened with Fainu. We were wrong there because we didn't think we'd need a cover.

Always have a Plan B to back up Plan A.

As such we ended up with Danny Levi and Lachlan Croker as our dummy halves. And I don't need to tell anyone here how that worked out.....

I can tell you he is a genuine bloke, signed my sons jersey at a footy clinic was was so good with all the kids. Now to get my son Will playing for the Mona vale raiders junior rugby league club and coached by the turbos! :D

Good luck mate

my boy showed plenty of desire until about 3 and a half, sang songs, knew the players but then fully nerded up.its great he is walking his own path , but it would have been nice to have someone to watch the footy with. Nearly 16 now and only watches it if we eat dinner while its on , then zoom, gaming, studying, streaming, building pooters, watch paint dry. Anything but

But we always crap on about game day and he always wants to know if i need something before kick off, snacks help. Its still cute
He still sings the garden shed song to me on game day , and chants 40 nil

But we have weekends free mostly. Loved scouts , now he is a venturer. Each to there own

Do you think that a rookie half winning in 2011 maybe had something to do with the fact that we had a team stacked with finals experience and a a title 3 years earlier under their belt... ?
Of course mate. And we were able to assemble a great squad due to the fact they all took understand to stay together.

Question for you @hozza .....

What were you smoking before posting the OP last night mate?
Mate what are you smoking to constantly defend a captain who can’t lead, can’t manage a football game, and divides fellow players and fans alike...

I mean would anyone say anything like this about our past captains Holden? J Lyon, Toovey, Vautin all were captains who the players would follow anywhere. Just the other day Carroll was on nrl360 with Toovey and still called Toovey his captain, 23yrs on. I somehow doubt 23 yrs on that many from this current squad will refer to Daly as there captain..

Is that true? That is ludicrous business from the Tigers.... madness
Apparently it is $500k for wing with incentives that will get him up to $800k if he plays more than 12 games at fullback and makes the position his own (was on 360 the other week).

Oh look, another 'educated' post.

So let me get this straight, you want to get rid of DCE who is:
  • Our captain
  • Current Qld Captain
  • Australian Halfback
  • the only premiership winning player in our 17 week in week out
  • 2nd for try assists and equal 3rd for line break assists in the 2020 season (where will all our opportunities come from if you remove DCE?)

If you compare that to what other halves in the comp are getting paid, we've got a pretty good deal for DCE.

I notice that you've failed to name a replacement for him.... Please make sure you do so I can see which player in the comp will lay on as many tries as him this season without his other 3 spine players.
Yep they never have replacements that are within our price range, are actually available and are real quality when they talk about off loading our higher paid players

Hey Hozza, out of curtesy to you I rang the great one J Lyons and asked for his opinion on your comment - his response was - hmmmm his (DCE) heart is there, he bleeds for the club, and given the injuries and "other issues" with the spine, we really need to pull our heads in. If the team was intact, not injured or otherwise excluded, then your argument would be more real.

He said we would have upset a few teams in the finals given injury free.

BTW he has a look at this site occasionally and has giggle. He reckons we are funny?

So Hozza thanks for prompting me to give him a tingle - it was great, actually prompted me to ring the Wombat straight afterwards to see how his going, struggling a bit but active again.

I'm thinking us Silvertails should do something special post corona at Brookie for the great one!
That will do me - if J Lyon says that it is tough for the team to compete with 3/4 ers of the spine gone for the year I am a believer. Funny I have been saying that for weeks. We certainly need to rearrange some of the deck chairs though with the supporting cast - there needs to be some significant turnover there. I certainly don't mind the thought of Cust to hooker - tough player, good defender, should get out of dummy half quick, good ball skills and is energetic and plays with passion - we need at least another 6 with those qualities including some rangy pacy tough backrowers and some fast tall wingers. We would be worst in the comp for tries from bombs I would gather.

Thanks for that but I think the Wombat needs more help! I would really love to be part of providing some help to things that are important to him. For an example Wombat was trying to put together an after school football skills program in Northern NSW. I think rather than sitting back we all should provide a legacy that the Wombat would be proud of. But that just me? Just saying
Hey SL - There needs to be a Not For Profit entity set up if one hasn't already been set up. While I am a Lobbyist by trade being a forrmer senior public servant, the business I own and run operates across Australia and we now mainly focus on writing grants and tenders for NFP's and businesses and also chasing sponsorship. I would be happy to offer some free help if an entity is set up and we would help to chase some grant funding. Just let me know.

I never said he was a good captain, but he's the best we have right now. Who else is there, Jake? He showed in the Newcastle loss that he's still way too emotional when dealing with the refs. We need a captain capable of talking to the refs, not one being sin-binned or even sent off because they've lost their $hit over what they see was a poor decision. Marty Taupau might be a candidate, but has he ever shown the leadership qualities on the field? Besides, he's only out there for half a game anyway. Like it or not, with the squad we have now and what we are likely to have in 2021, DCE is the best choice we've got.

He's not perfect, but he's what we have.

Oh, and don't try to say he should lead by example. If everyone of our players busted their guts week in and week out for this team to the same level Cherry does we'd hardly ever lose.

Until our roster is managed properly we are going to struggle year in year out. We have 3 players on 3mil +, which is just ridiculous!
We have a 1.3 mil halfback dud
1 mil fullback who can’t finish a season
And a 800k lock who is full of heart but not a game breaker. It’s just way too unbalanced.

We 100% need to shift Dce. He is not a leader, struggles to manage a game and is quite simply a player who divides opinion. Just look at this forum, you are either in the for Dce camp or against Dce camp. I’m guessing the playing group is no different. And that is the exact opposite of what a captain should be.

Think of our last premiership captain J Lyon. I’m pretty sure the players in that side ALL loved him and were willing to bleed for him. Toovey, If you said a bad word about him around M Carrol he’d fuk you up, and that’s 20yrs on. That’s a captain..

Absolutely zero point in purging players that aren’t even first graders, to only bring in players that aren’t first graders.. get rid of Dce and we open up 1.3 mil per season! That’s huge, it brings balance. We could sign 3 quality players for that..

Angus Crighton $500k
Addo Carr $400k
Decent hooker 400k or a young half. These players are just an example..

Or insert players here.

Crichton on 500K and JAC 400K.

I needed a laugh this evening cheers.

DCE isn't a dud. Bit harsh, he is the current qld HB.

I think DCE needs to lose the captaincy but take over the goalkicking. That's the responsibility he needs to take on.

He isn't perfect - makes mistakes and I sometimes think he is poor at leading the team around but he is far far better than anyone else on the market that is for sure - even at his inflated salary. Get him a good spine who aren't missing for the year and have big Marty leading the forwards in making yards and you will see a better half.

When you say bust a gut I’m guessing you mean running around in circles like a headless chook? Then putting in a bog average kick?

As for a captain I’d actually look at C Sironen..

Hozza, Crichton signed a three year deal worth close to 1m per year according to all media reports at the time, so not sure what you're disagreeing with.

Siro.....uh huh. Like Marty he's never shown any sort of leadership skills. If anyone, the best candidate behind DCE would be Tom. He's level headed, a lot less emotional than his brother, and as the fullback directing the line etc, captain would suit him. The problem is, keeping him on the park. No point having a captain who is constantly out injured.

And I've said it before and will gladly say it again. Its hard to soar like an eagle when you work with turkeys. By busting their gut I mean putting in the effort. Right now, in the words of Mr Strickland from Back to the Future ... we have a few slackers in this squad. But DCE is certainly not one of them. He may run around like a headless chook at times, but at least he's trying to get things happening. I'd rather him be having a go than sit back and do nothing.
