When you're coming from an angle and have started "in front" of someone (Drinkwater and Holmes didn't start behind Koula), the distance you have to cover is shorter than the ball runners running distance.
Koula ran about 85 metres. From where they started Drinkwater and Holmes would have gone about 60 or 70 at most, and Koula still passed them.
