Bankwest stadium is aligned north to south. The ball travelled about a meter forward and five metres east or west depending on which end the Sea Eagles were attacking at the time. Add in the rotation of the earth, and assuming the ball was in the air for about a second, and the actual lateral distance travelled may have been as much as 12 metres or as little as minus 2 metres. The small deviation in the alignment of the stadium ( google maps shows it running roughly from NNE to SSW) and the tilt of the Earth’s axis probably added or subtracted a few centimetres from its forward motion. None the less, it was backward out of the hands.
