Parramatta are not premiership contenders. You cannot tell me.

Fantastic win Cowboys.

They had some big questions asked of them early but they just held their line and frustrated the Eels into submission. They had a number of big defensive plays but the one that stood out to me was the driving tackle on Perham that forced him out. It just made the Eels unsure of themselves and with their hackneyed team prevented them from playing with any speed.

Meanwhile the Cowboys kept their composure and used their forwards to lay a platform and they identified a mismatch between Feldt and Perham.

The finish was just the icing on the cake but it was well and truly deserved. The only points the Eels put on was through a trick play which with all the ball and territory they received was bound to happen.

I don't want to get too ahead of myself here because we saw similar run from the Cowboys last year before it all fell apart but there's plenty to like about them moving forward. It appears that Payten's my way or the highway mantra could be paying off.

More in need of quality centres at the moment, more options on the wings.

Wingers are getting more important that centers in a lot of ways. Cant actually wait to see how we go about countering theirs this year.

Yeah will be a key match up. More set for options on the wings though- Hammer, Oates, Coates, Feldt. A few cross over from wing and centre, Hammer, Val, Gagai.

I went back and forth on the tip ultimately going with Parramatta with the idea that they'd eventually crack the Cowboys around the middle. While the Cowboys defence deserves a ton of credit, I felt the Eels were really pedestrian in attack. They really missed having a Dylan Brown take on the line and it's an area where Moses should have covered.

I thought one of the big issues was how their forwards attacked their line. When you're closer to the line, the forwards are merely battering rams looking for quick play the balls - they're not there to ruck metres. There were a few times where Campbell-Gillard especially just made life so easy for the Cows defence.

They desperately need some more strike. Yes they're missing Sivo and they rely heavily on playing down his edge. However even in the big games it's never been enough and they've always looked lost hoping that somebody can step up and get it done. I think this is their last real crack at a premiership before they lose some quality players, I'm just not seeing a path to victory yet.

I think we defended very well and frustrated them out of the game. Executed a few times when opportunities came our way, but basically threw numbers at their attacking weapons whenever we could and developed a level of desperate scramble that I haven’t seen from us in years.

We still have no line speed and our defence looks scrappy, but if we can scramble like that for the rest of the year, we’ll do a lot better than in the last few…

The other night it appeared that the Sharks really wanted to try and play the Broncos around the edges which traditionally has been a strong suit of the Broncos. Usually it was because the Broncos could sweep, but instead they employed an up and in to shut down Talakai which put Cronulla on the back-foot. It actually took the Broncos nearly the entire half to capitilise on it, but they were able to enjoy some success by targeting Talakai and later on Nicho Hynes.

Cronulla were underdone themselves. It appears Will Kennedy is playing injured and isn't running freely at all. As well as Haas did to cover him, Kennedy should have made far more ground than he did during that period. The decision to inject Graham into the contest also backfired on them as well. Graham is a really handy player when he can play direct and feed good ball to Mulitalo. The other night, he was getting the ball running sideways from Hynes and by the time he'd shape to pass Cobbo had the space covered.

If Wilton was on his game, it would have exposed the Broncos right edge which is vulnerable. Teams are finding a lot of success targeting Riki and either breaking through or creating numbers down the blind but Cronulla tended to go one pass too many.

They remind me a lot of the Broncos in that for all their strengths, they also have plenty of weaknesses so if you can target their back three with incisive kicks or get Egan and Tevaga asking questions around the ruck before getting Aitken etc. charging at their halves. It's just about making them uncomfortable if you can do that they'll wilt.

I'll be keen to see how the Cowboys travel...they have had a dream start to the year as far as local (home/Qld/Darwin) games, only been outside Qld once and that was to Canberra. Their first game in Sydney is Round 12 in Penrith. Their draw has also been pretty soft, they've had Dogs, Raiders twice, Warriors, us, Titans, Roosters and now Eels...but you can only play who's in front of you. Should be in the 8 come the end of the year (or thereabouts) and I definitely have egg on my face after predicting them a solid bottom 4 this year.

No celebration from Coates, he used to get excited when scoring tries. Bellamy has clearly beaten that out of him and turned him into another storm bot.
