There’s a serious concern that the new retrospective sin bin rule could be exploited by clubs, late in games.

Hypothetically speaking, it’s a tight contest with anything from 15-25 minutes remaining and an interchange forward is clipped taking a hit up. It’s close to the end of his final stint anyway…why not just fail him and enjoy a one man advantage that supersedes having the extra player on the pine?! The independent doctor looks at footage, but they don’t tell clubs they aren’t allow to fail a player’s HIA. I understand the timing needs to sync up but is not implausible that this could happen.

The NRL love spoiling the fan experience with unexpected twists…this new rule is just another example. Sit comfortable in the belief that everything is under control, before the rug is ripped out from under you, as a player is suddenly binned 15 minutes after the fact 😡

I thought it was a thought bubble by a few coaches, put up as a potential idea, at this stage anyway.

But yes, your fears are definitely founded if it was to be introduced. Last thing the NRL needs is more grey areas to be exploited.

It’s a rule now. A player was binned in the Charity Shield, under it. Interestingly, majority of coaches were opposed to the idea.

Dodd was binned under an experimental rule being trialled during the pre-season challenge, which allows the Bunker to revisit any actions within 15 minutes of their occurrence, and discipline accordingly.

I was absolutely flabbergasted when I saw this happen yesterday.

I’ll cross my fingers that it’s never introduced to the competition proper.

Yeah, as already pointed out, this was only for the trials. But now that they've tried it and everybody hates it, the NRL is almost certain to introduce it at some stage…
