Pell’s ashes swept under carpet, in traditional Catholic ceremony

In a tasteful ceremony at Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral this morning, former cardinal and child-abuse enabler George Pell was laid to rest, his ashes swept under a beautiful ceremonial carpet, as is tradition in the Catholic Church.

“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, swept under the carpet, in God we trust,” the priest proclaimed, quoting the traditional Catholic verse, as he solemnly brushed any remaining evidence of George Pell under the beautifully-embroided carpet.

Church scholars say the sweeping-under-the-carpet-ceremony is steeped in meaning. “It’s symbolic of our faith – we pretend something is there when it’s not, and pretend something is not there when it clearly is,” one scholar explained.

Attendees said it was poignant to bid farewell to Pell in such a manner. “He always managed to disappear at just the right moment. It was a fitting tribute,” one said.

St Mary’s Cathedral evades protesters by moving George Pell’s body to another parish

St Mary’s Cathedral has dealt with the pesky problem of protesters outside George Pell’s funeral, quietly shifting the cardinal’s body to another church district while no-one was watching.

“That’s our standard way of dealing with things. It’s not our problem now,” a Catholic Church spokesperson said. “If these protesters have an issue with the systematic abuse of children overseen by George Pell, then I’m afraid there’s nothing much we can do about it now. He’s no longer here”.

Pressed further on Pell’s legacy as the most senior Catholic within Australia, the spokesperson said, “Sorry, who? Not sure who you’re talking about. There’s no-one by that name in our parish”.

Richard Belzer, best known for playing John Munch on Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: SVU, has died at the age of 78.

Belzer died Sunday at his home in France, a friend of the actor confirms to The Hollywood Reporter, adding, “He had lots of health issues, and his last words were, ‘F–k you, motherf–er.'”

Belzer will forever be remembered for playing John Munch, a role he originated on Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1999, before relocating him to Law & Order: SVU from 1999 to 2016. Combining his run on those two shows, as well as his appearances in their various spinoffs and TV movies, Belzer played this character for nearly 25 years.

In addition to playing Munch (a role he also took to an episode of The X-Files), Belzer’s TV resume includes recurring roles and memorable appearances on shows like The Flash (the original), Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Miami Vice, Moonlighting, South Park and The Wire.

More for me (and Canadians in general) but it also shows that stars well known in one country - can be unheard of in most others.

Still...

Gordon Pinsent, the adored Canadian actor whose career hit its peak well into his 70s with an award-winning performance as the heartbroken husband in “Away From Her,” has died.

Pinsent died on Saturday evening at age 92, his friend actor Mark Critch confirmed.

Rugby league icon John Sattler has died at the age of 80.

Sattler had suffered from dementia for a number of years.

He played 195 games for South Sydney in the 1960s and 70s, and famously led the Rabbitohs to victory in the 1970 grand final despite breaking his jaw during the game.

He was a true gentleman Woodsie. Tough as nuts player. Pretty tough publican from what I heard but outside of that a true gentleman. Had the pleasure of taking him and his 2 grandsons fishing a number of times and although me being a Manly supporter, never had a bad word to say. Condolences to Scott and family
Vale John Sattler
