Red Zone Defence

Fainu was terrible defensively in his time on the field and in our red zone, looked sluggish and tired along with arm tackling----needs to work on his defense and game hardened fitness big time---Cronulla are trying to spot him.

He probably has a hangova 😀

But seriously, this is why he cannot be the starting 9 each week as he cannot maintain that intensity at the moment week in week out.

Defence wins comps.
Defense gives you the platform to win games it doesn't win you the game for the most part, unless the contest is close.

You can defend all you want but if you don't score more points you wont get the rewards.

What good defense shows is that the team has a good hard working ethic and you need that to have a consistent competing season.

@mave didn’t say that defence solely wins comps. But it is absolutely correct that great defence is essential to win a comp

Love it . Bagging his defence after a team wins with less ball in a half of football than you will see for the next 10 seasons. At one point 20 percent in 15 or 20 minutes..The same rubbish was bandied around after the bulldogs game and it was simply wrong.

I supposed you missed the tackle when he buried that shark and drove him into the turf with a great shoulder hit in our red zone .Cronulla were trying to spot him ! How did that work out for them ? They scored one try in the middle off a dodgy tap with all that ball in the second half and he plays middle where Fifita and co went all night.

What actually happened is only Jake and Marty made more tackles than him for us today and his minutes would have been the same or less than most out there, and guess what , those minutes coincided exactly with the run of penalties so of course he was tired like everyone else..But why let the facts get in the way of a good story.

What occurred out there today which was quite frankly amazing , simply can’t and doesn’t happen happen if one of your four middle forwards is falling off tackles and arm grabbing like a schoolgirl 10 metres out from your line .They got 11 f....ing penalties in a row and people are having a crack at a young middle forward responsible for defending our line ..... and succeeding. The defence of the whole team was astonishing .Was one of our greatest wins. Enjoy it.

Get on board. Kids 19 or 20 or something and learning. Know many middle forwards at his age who are tough as teak and never miss or blow a bit after 11 straight penalties.? I haven’t seen many .... mainly because I have not seen 11 penalties in a row in 30 years

.FMD this is a tough school.Even the most cursory of examinations of the last three games shows we have been totally and utterly starved of the ball in the second half (when he does and will play most of his minutes ) of all those games and is tackling himself into the ground. Look at his stats in those games. It’s not rocket science. The kids defence is fine.Watch the Dogs game under extreme fatigue in the second half. It was absolutely outstanding. 30 odd tackles and no misses. You don’t forget how to tackle in a week.

He’s a star and will be for a long time.

What Red zone defence actually does is break down the opposition who usually drop heads and concede points down the other end ....I would call it a little important...

Agree with all that. The kid is probably on the top of every ops team tip sheet now. The Api & Fainu show, the best in the NRL.
On another note if I ever need a defence lawyer, I’m ringing you @Sue .@;)

Mentioned the comment at half time, has zero to do with the end result of a great team defensive effort when it mattered.(The spotting i was referring to was that end part of the first half when he just came onto the field, he was targeted when possible)

Cronulla were poor and flat but at the same time only played as well as we allowed, so not taking anything away from the performance----it was purely a judgment call on "his"performance(not the team as a whole) in the last 10mins of the first half, he was already showing signs of fatigue and hand grabbing when he was barely on the field.

Second half there are times he is walking back or hands on hips switched off in the middle when the play is not nearby.(or not far enough away to give him the benefit of the doubt of being able to rest up or switch off for a moment)

I saw the tackle your are referring to, i want to see that when a player is running hard at him, not the surprise under the ribcage hit.(yes he is young and still developing and there are attacking parts to his game i love but if i see an issue i am not going to sugar coat it)

Once again read my post, has zero to do with the end result and made at half time, i wasn't happy with his energy levels after only being on the field for 10mins.

I wouldn't be hiring a defence lawyer who twists the facts of what i typed to reflect a teams performance when it was aimed at an individuals lack of energy after only being on the field for 10mins.

The comment you are replying to is defense attitude in general and how it reflects a good team work ethic, not referencing redzone defense in that reply.

Redzone defense is easier than general play defense when the speed of the play the ball has the defense potentially gassing and going backwards.

In general i would take a team with the 4th best defense stats and the best attack over a team with the best defense and the 4th best attack.(talking about in the top 8 if i had a choice----if i am a bottom 8 side i want the reverse to remain competitive) Des concentrated on defense in the off season with better structures and reading of play as we were a bottom 8 side, you can tell the team had video session after video session of last years woeful defensive displays.

What usually happens though is teams who have the best attack usually have good defenses also, the opposition gets into a rut of high risk plays, frustration, drop balls or giving away too many penalties that leads to bad possession flow/ momentum swings and field position.

To be fair on you the time stamp on the replies is wrong by a few hours, i sent that message at half time but it shows 8pm, seems to always be this way here.

No - it is 100% about turning away the opposition after multiple attacking opportunities in the Red Zone.
More often than not - the side with this ability will score points down the other end.
Also great defence will beat great offence....you don’t score points- the opposition will find a way....may get ugly but the best defensive sides find a way.

Agree to disagree.

Most professional sporting outfits that win comps consistently having an attacking mentality or try to increase the teams overall skill set, even the defense is used with an attacking positive mindset behind their structures.

In the old days of professional sport (all sports) defense was seen as just a way to repel an attack with no other thought behind it, these days it is all about pressing and limiting time, forcing mistakes regain possession in attacking positions or attacking straight after in the most efficient manner.

What fans of the round ball game fail to appreciate in Leicester City's Premier League winning season is how they evolved defense to have an attacking reasoning behind it, their counter attack was so efficient in it's output given for the most part in games Leicester only had between 30-40 percent of the ball---if their attack had no thought behind it all that defense would of been pointless.
