The cash-strapped NRL is just days away from securing a stunning new TV broadcast deal worth up to $2.3 billion, the richest in Australia’s sporting history.
The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Channel 9 and Fox Sports are on the verge of agreeing to a lucrative seven-year contract that will lift rugby league from a financial scrapheap, safeguard the game’s long-term viability and guarantee the survival of all 16 clubs.
Independent commission chairman Peter V’landys is hoping to reach an agreement in principal by Friday for the remaining three years of the current contract plus a four-season extension until 2027.

It would be the most lucrative broadcast deal in the history of Australian sport, averaging out at almost $330 million a season – a remarkable outcome given the long-term global financial uncertainty over the COVID-19 crisis.

The contract will be heavily discounted for this season because of the reduction to 20 rounds although the NRL is expecting ratings to increase because fans cannot attend the venues.
After weeks of uncertainty over Channel 9’s position with their free-to-air, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the network has been forced back into negotiations with an improved offer because of a fierce public backlash over their threats to abandon the game.
It is a spectacular backflip after expressing a willingness to walk away from the sport last week.
“It’s not a given that NRL has to be part of our future,” Marks said.
The finer details of the match scheduling for both networks is still being thrashed out.
There would be scope in the new contract to adjust the figures if future expansion into Brisbane and other areas delivers more content.
V’landys was reluctant to comment yesterday because of confidentiality agreements with both Fox Sports boss Patrick Delany and Channel 9 chief executive Hugh Marks.

“Both partners have acted in great faith and I believe we’re very close,” V’landys said.
“Hopefully we’ll have it finalised by next Friday. That’s my aim.
“The loyalty factor has been important because you want to look after your partners who have been with the game for a long time.”
The digital component of the deal and the future of the NRL website is still to be sorted.
Global Media and Sports boss Colin Smith has a long history in local and international broadcast deals. He says this is a great outcome for all parties.
“Peter V’landys has been the saviour of the NRL, no doubt for me,” Smith said.
“In this climate, if you ask what represents a good broadcast deal, I would say anything from $300 million to $350m a year is an excellent result.
“V’landys is a master negotiator, he is a street fighter and he is not afraid to take the bull by the horns. He looks at the outcome and he actually delivers on it.

“Seriously, if Peter can achieve in excess of $300 million, that is fantastic.”
The new TV contract will allow the NRL to establish a seven-year strategic plan, including grassroots development, long-term investments, possible expansion and a stadium policy for Sydney’s nine clubs.
V’landys has vowed to slash $50 million in costs from NRL headquarters and put spending restrictions in place for coaching, sports science and general football expenditure at the clubs.
This will allow the game rebuild from its ‘catastrophic’ financial crisis and ensure money is available from the new television deal to invest $500 million from the new deal over the next seven years.

Nobody is suggesting Buzz was sober when he wrote it ...
Not saying it's wrong, just seems like an odd move from a company that had it's value reduced by 40% two days ago, especially when the NRL seemed to have little leverage.

Maybe they are looking at sport and thinking only idiots are going to attend live matches from here out so ratings will rise, but that's a huge unknown. You wouldn't make a long term deal with this kind of uncertainty hanging over the landscape of the product you're buying...

Foxtel needs the NRL more than the NRL needs it. Without it, it simply can't survive. Probably can't survive in its current form anyway, but still. As for Nine, there's a lovely story in the Telecrap opposite Buzz's piece suggesting their CEO is a) having an affair with his Executive Assistant and b) on the way out. News Corp as its finest. But regardless of their posturing, Nine needs the NRL, too.

Left field won't happen ... but 2 of the 3 largest audience sports on foxtel would have to be Rugby League and horse racing ... and V'Landys runs one and a big part of the other ...

Just say .... RL and Racing set up their own pay network ...

So we are going from an avg 360M per year deal to a 330M dollar deal.

I respect in COVID that the deal is reasonable and a good effort, but its not in anyway better.

7 years is also a long time in an economy and it could be poor by year 7.

I guess salary cap is not going to rise much over the 7 years, unless the NRL can secure additioanl funding or get crowds to increase (whichh wont be the case in teh next 12-18 months).

SUre Vlandys will clean up the over-spend, but the NRL will also need to put a % of that money away to protect themselves.

Almost.

The existing 2020 deal needs to have the 5 missing rounds deducted which is 72M, which makes 2020 only 288M, not 360M... and fair enough so. The ensuing 6 year deal will total 2,012,000.000. Divided by 6 years is 335.3*M.

Not the 360M/year already in place, but not such a bad deal considering the current circumstances and the 4 year extension.

Decent management should produce proper club and grass-roots administration and funding, player retirement and welfare and a healthy bottom line.

Good post buddy.
The Turd is dead...long live the King.

I don't get it? News Ltd are reporting it as the richest deal in Australian sporting history yet it is well below the AFL''s last deal and nearly 200 million less than the last NRL deal which was 1.8 billion over 5yrs. This deal is 1.6billion over 5 years. I am a fan of V'Landys however I don't think losing 125 million over the next 6 years is really all that great. I am worried this deal is being done in haste and really it is not necessary as we have a deal already in place for 2021. Especially considering how many refs and development officers could be paid for with 25 million a year. In saying that though I hope V'Landys is legit and not a News Ltd plant to drive the deal down, because I really think V'Landys can do good things. The 125 million reduction could be the NRL conceding some cash to regain some more scheduling control from the broadcasters.

It’s a lot of money if used wisely. Players just need to realise that very few players are going to earn 1 million dollars a year. anything over $300K a year is a big income. Let them try to earn that outside of the NRL. If players jump ship for more money overseas let them go it. The obscene administration costs are being wound back so the Amounts being discussed won’t affect the clubs much.

PETER V’LANDYS COULD SOON BE LOST TO RUGBY LEAGUE

ARLC chair Peter V’landys could walk away from rugby league if he inks a record TV deal with broadcasters and restarts the competition on May 28.

Talks with Channel Nine and Foxtel are set to secure the game a $2.3 billion, seven-year TV deal and that could mean V’landys is content to leave the game on a high.

“If I can get the game in a good financial position and started again, that will be my reward,” V’landys told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“I owe rugby league because it saved me from getting bashed up when I was a young migrant kid.

“I didn’t want to be ARLC chair. Being CEO is not on the cards. I’ve got no agendas. I don’t need to be chair or chief executive.

“Rugby league saved me as a migrant kid in Wollongong and if I can get the game up and going and in a good financial position, I will have repaid the debt.”

I would say that there are corporations in the big end of town offering monopoly money for him ... hate to see him leave ... but he has earned anything he gets ....
