I noticed the other night in the Tri Nations that Matai has "Matai" tattooed across his midriff in big letters, and SBW has "Williams" emblazoned across his shoulders. This trend started with Freestyle MotoX guys as far as I can tell, guys like Brian Deegan and Mike Metzger.

My question is a simple one. Why ?? Are they prone to forgetting their names ?
 
I have seen this type of work around a fair few places, much like the pointless tribal and butterflies people like to sport.

I am tattooed myself but these are just silly IMO, can't imagine there being much meaning behind them.
