Pittwater Legend

We brought back Geoff Toovey!
Some people will leave our club and you wouldn’t be too fussed. I can say though that I was instantly disappointed when I found out that the time of each of these 4 guys would be coming to an end at our club.

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

Now a 3 time premiership winner. He’s a savage on the field and I always thought he was something special from the moment he started first grade. I will say though that the referee turning a blind eye on him in the 2013 grand final went some way to help the Rorters win that game against us

King Gutho

Our best local product in the backs along with Tom Turbo during the NRL era. A switched on and super fit player who helps his team get over the line by talking heaps and constantly pushing up in support. Has now played 100+ games and has a winning percentage above 50% which is unlike many other Parra players. His letter this week publicly confirmed that Manly showed him the door after initially extending his contract. He’s doing a fantastic job as a first grade captain

Tooves

You only need to look at the Broncos this year to see what happens when your leaders don’t have the guts and steel during tough circumstances. Tooves took a team with stars a little past their prime to the top 4 in 3 consecutive seasons. Misfortune and injustice meant that he would narrowly miss out on a premiership in 2013 and a minor premiership in 2014. 2015 saw our team with one of the worst injury tolls in living memory and some serious off-field **** going on against Toovey. 2 wins and 6 losses after 8 rounds saw us in the deepest **** I have ever seen. But Tooves and the team hung tough to see us miss out on the finals by just 2 competition points and a lesser p/d. Along the way we pumped premiership contenders in the 2nd half of that season including the Broncos by 30 points

Brian Kelly

An electric player in attack. A few of my favourite attacking moments during the Trent Barrett era heavily featured this gutsy and humble lad. Hank Scorpio and Suli had some fine moments in attack but Kelly still produced more in attack than them over the entire 2019 season despite playing for the wooden spooners. Again this year he is providing more in attack than our centres despite less appearances and also playing in a team that has been stuck in the bottom 4. The Titans are looking on the up and their backline should be able to give him better opportunities to showcase his smarts and skills from next season

Interesting with JWH, Des let him go at the time and kept one ir two players due to loyalty.

JWH was willing to stay on less than what the Rorters offered, the offer he got from the club was a penny pinching offer.

Can’t keep them all but he should have been retained.

No club keeps every player but our club always kept the best
The incomparable Immortal , Randall Turbos, Lyon , Lyons , Strewarts , Hasler , Cleal , Menzies etc etc Toovey never left us as he was a one club great player

King Gutho......you obviously mean Queen Gutho! I’ve never been happier to see a player get shipped off as much as I was with him! Overrated, arrogant, moaning, loudmouth twat. Thank God he’s gone & hopefully never coming back!

Dont remember Gutho being overly opinionated pre-Parra but maybe he was... I'd add Shaun Lane... he wasn't happy so we probably couldnt keep him but gee he was doing some nice edge running for us b4 he left and hes continued that...
Others were Gifty, Spud and Dale Shearer - never enjoyed watching those guys play for other clubs...

Can’t keep everyone.

Gutho would have never stayed so who cares. Really think he would have copped a role at centre playing second fiddle to Tom Turbo?

Koroisau too. Fainu was lengths ahead of him last year. At the time it was the right decision.

More players like Hynes, Ramien, Garner I wish we kept. They are within our salary cap and would be starting / playing significant role in our team today.

On the whole I think Manly do extremely well with retention. The only one I think we really got wrong was JWH. There’s been some that have been interesting but there was a plan around it that usually worked out. However, JWH’s potential was obvious and not sure why we let him go.

The only other one was Orford, then paid overs for Kimmorley, then had to pay overs to get Orford back.

I remember being so excited when we signed kimmorley. I was like 11 years old or something and remember seeing it on the news it was like the best day ever lol... what a lemon he turned out to be for us

Gutho is the heart and soul of Doesn'tmatta and a huge reason they are so far ahead of us on the ladder.
It wasn't his fault that he was forced to leave Manly, and it is only sour grapes that he cops such vitriol on here from certain posters.
If he was still playing for us I'd like to bet we would be a lot higher in the premiership.

Kelly is like suli. Gets no quality ball ever. Always got bull**** last minute balls at the line.
Manly dont need centres and wingers because they dont get used. The need fast backrowers because all of our outside backs do hit ups and tackle but not much more.

Rowdy always says that he should never have left Manly. Can you imagine after we signed Matthew Ridge, having Rowdy and Michael O'Connor as our centres in the early 90s?

And I still wonder if Shaun Lane would have left if he had known Zoolander wasn't staying on as coach.

Zach Nicholls. Showed great promise in the juniors and would have made a pretty fair replacement for Cherry if Cherry had gone to the coast. Would probably be on half of Cherry’s coin which would have freed up more money to spend on centres and wingers. Good team player, good vision, speed and agility, and a good organiser. Not a great kicking game but that could have been developed.

In the blue and gold he is. If he was wearing maroon and white he’d be a fan favorite. But yes I agree, I can’t stand the guy lol

I am always flabbergasted at the ‘He wouldn’t have played anywhere but fullback so stuff him’ logic some espouse.

Once again for the dim witted: Gutherson signed a contract with Manly at the same time as Jake and Tom, c. April 2015, knowing full well that the latter would be first choice fullback.

Gutherson did not want to leave.

He is making great strides elsewhere because Fulton and/or Barrett were concerned about his ACL history. Great decision Bob and Trent. Not.

I agree with all that Frank ...... I followed Gutho through the junior ranks and had him pencilled in as a future Manly star ... I was pissed to see him let go ... Tom Wright also .... Nico Hynes another
Paul Vauntin was another we let go a year or two to soon

There was also the fact that there was a 1st Grade spot for him at Parra and whilst Matai and Killer were towards the end of their career, neither had announced any retirement plans when he left so he was a fill-in centre at the time...
I dont like the way he carries on much but I dont begrudge him for taking his opportunity and yes I reckon our recruitment screwed the pooch on Gutho...
Reckon we would love his 'passion' if he was still in Maroon and white...
