Manly boss fires back
AUGUST 19, 2018

Manly chair and majority owner Scott Penn has spoken of bitter disappointment and utter frustration at criticism of his family, and chief executive Lyall Gorman, as they deal with the ongoing fallout from coach Trent Barrett’s decision to hand in his resignation.

Penn also ridiculed suggestions he had taken his eye off the ball by spending much of his time overseas, and rejected claims the football club had not been given the financial backing required to be successful.

Barrett has given the Sea Eagles 12-months’ notice under the terms of his contract, a decision that has effectively turned the playing group against club hierarchy. Gorman is expected to meet senior players this week to clarify the situation but Penn, who only returned from the US yesterday morning, insists the argument around Barrett has been clouded by mistruths and inaccuracies.

Barrett has been reluctant to divulge the details of his concerns, citing legal issues, but the rumour mill suggests he has been disappointed with the support from the club.

Penn disputes any suggestion he and his family have not provided the financial backing for the Sea Eagles to be successful and insists they have given Barrett unwavering support.

It is understood club officials sat down with Barrett last November and agreed to all his wishes. The club also re-signed all his coaching staff to extensions two months ago.

The suspicion among club hierarchy is that Barrett resigned because he had another job lined up and was also concerned about the deterioration of his relationship with club legend Bob Fulton.

Penn refused to be critical of the coach, but he did reject some of the accusations that have been made against the owners.

“What is the tangible criticism?” Penn asked The Australian.

“The truth is the truth and … it has nothing to do with management at all. We are the only private owners in the entire NRL paying the full salary cap and funding the juniors.

“No other private club in the league does that. They have a leagues club to finance their juniors or they don’t run their juniors. If anyone is suggesting we are not funding the team that is absolute bull****. It is a disgrace that other people are pushing their own agenda and trying to blame us.

“We are sick of it, absolutely sick of it. Give one example of us not providing that support. There is not one tangible example.”

Penn and his family have ploughed millions into the club over the years and are likely to face another shortfall this year given crowd numbers have been down and results have been poor.

They have been accused of not providing Barrett with a recruitment manager or other support staff. Yet Penn points out they made an offer to recruitment guru Peter O’Sullivan only for him to take up a deal with the New Zealand Warriors.

“We put a formal offer to him and he chose to go to the Warriors,” Penn said. “We have had a number of people we have looked at and we put formal offers into a couple. That is absolute crap. It’s not as if we haven’t been trying.”

In response to claims the club’s facilities were substandard, Penn said: “The facilities are fine — we just spent $500,000 on the gym. We have made four grand finals from those facilities too. They are fantastic. The (NSW) Waratahs would love to be back in there, too. That is a furphy.”

Penn also strongly defended Gorman amid a torrent of criticism.

“It is totally unwarranted,” Penn said. “He couldn’t be working harder. We are super strong and we know what we need to achieve. We have to protect the club and do what is best for the club. We know that eventually the truth will come out and from an ownership and management point of view we have nothing but the club’s best interests of heart. A lot of the suggestions that have been made are just not true.”

Penn said he and his family remain as committed as ever to the club and denied his work overseas had affected their season.

“We are certainly sick of the criticism when all we have done is put our hard-earned into it,” he said. “It is ridiculous. This constant barrage that I am constantly overseas — I am on the phone every day to Lyall. We are literally on the phone every day. We do not rest. We have to fix it — we are totally committed to fixing it.”

Glad to hear the other side of the story, Barett is using every excuse to cover his coaching record. Regardless of what u have and don’t have, that does not stop a team performing at high level, he hàs at least 7 to 8 top line players to work around and cannot get the team to win. If these players think he is that great why don’t they show it on the field, unfortunately most of them are young and don’t know a good coach from a bad one. When you continuously let 30 to 40 points in every game there is a serious problem, Barett cannot stay, their has been to much bitching from him to the club for this too work out. When u threaten to leave, there is no return after that threat, Go so we can get the right person to take this club forward and wants to be here. He dies not have the backbone to say it is us against them, LOOK I MIGHT NOT HAVE EVERYTHING U HAVE BUT WE ARE WINNING, Now that would earn respect.

The breakdown in the Barrett - Penn relationship seems blindingly obvious.

What annoys me the most is the constant blame game both Penn ( Zorba) and Barrett appear to have resorted to. Every side blaming the other.

No-one cares ultimately who did what wrong, and when, just fkn fix it, and quickly.

Barrett is shady.
Remember when he signed with manly in 2015 Penrith sidelined him as assistant coach admit talk of him bring players.

Remember those superstars she brought from Penrith
Lewis brown and that reserve grader who took a punt at the club the flog with the two first names Issac John.

Marquee signings those pair of potplants from a potplant coach.

It doesn't help members for both sides to argue via the media.:shake:

Meeting should be called to explain the clause in Baz's contract that he has activated back in July.

Tangibles Penn referred to would be detailed in there.

The fact that they are still recruiting a Recruiter does not help Baz with current recruitment either. 😕

This will be our off season sadly @:(

He can do whatever, I guess, but I thought he could have done this in a members email. I mean, it'd end up in the press anyway so why not take the opportunity to connect directly with the members, of which many are openly hoping he sells.

Penn could have done a proactive email saying that his family has done the following, yet now it just seems like a whine.

Probably just me, I dunno.

Passionate words from our owner. Wow talk about too little too late, our club is riddled with dysfunction and Mr Penn, you are at the heart of that!!! If you and your family focus on bringing the club together rather than freezing out people who you perceive to be unaligned and starting telling the fans, members etc what your plans for the club are, that would be a good start.

There is not a Manly fan out there who does not appreciate your family investment in our club, we understand how important that is for our survival, what our fans are sick and tired of is how unprofessional and how much we lack true leadership.

We should all have the goal that Manly are up at the top where we belong, Your theme is "Stronger, together" Let us see the evidence of that!!!

So in the article it says Scott got back from the US on Saturday morning. Interesting that a poster on here said a mate of theirs overheard Scott at the game on FRIDAY night talking about the fans and the lack of care he has.

It's an easy fix and that would be to sort the coaching mess out asap and give some clarity over the situation to the members with a video message or even better face to face with members, even if it's only via invite only for members 10+yrs.

One thing is for sure is that they seem to have trouble attracting staff to the club and that in itself is a question that remains unanswered but the public circus around our club isn't a good look for the club.

But as much as that plea might be passionate, in the article Scott was quoted saying that: “The truth is the truth and … it has nothing to do with management at all. We are the only private owners in the entire NRL paying the full salary cap and funding the juniors.

I think the Salary cap is provided by the NRL $9M+ and another $4M via the NRL grant given to all clubs.... If that is incorrect then please correct me. Just for that line i don't believe the guy.

I though the post referring to Friday night said that it was a director of the board/club, not Penn himself?

Actually, good to hear Penn being fired up. I know I've said this a lot but I believe a most of Baz's issues, (apart from some very ordinary coaching) have been fuelled by Gould. Obviously Baz has confided in him at peak times and Gus has done everything he can to fill Barrett's head on why he can't be successful with our supposedly crap facilities. He works for Channel Nine, the league channel, and has been publicly bagging our club to the core since mid-season. The media, and lemming opposition fans have run with it and stuck the boot in on every occasion.
Now Penn should put his past gripes behind him regarding Hasler and Tooves and let our club move forward in a way that can join the Sea Eagles community back together.
Mr Blue Steel can go to a place where there's more mirrors.😛

In fairness, he also brought Api with him from Penrith. And while Brown and John were flops, even if poo did play a bucket load of first grade when he really didn't deserve to, Api has been good. At least, once he got his dummy half passing sorted he was good and I suspect he will be again from 2019. Fainu has been an adequate fill in during the second half of this year, but his defence and fitness need work, as does his dummy half passing.

With regards to Barrett and the Penn's....like some others I suspect that parasite manager Beavis is behind a lot of the unrest. And he doesn't give a rats arse about Manly, only his cut from his clients. Him and Gould who has his own agendas.

I'm starting to think what tooves said was bang on. These guys do care and they are trying, but they've been given very bad advice. Gorman will fix it, and Barrett doesn't like him because Gorman see's him for the sorry coach that he is.
I think Barrett is just doing what he always does and is looking for excuses as to why he sucks as a coach. The only reason players like dce stick up for Barrett is because he's their mate.

Seems like he has no idea why his Family name has been discredited of late .Hows about the fact you fought tooth and nail to become the sole owners ,but to get there fans had to endure 5 years of constant infighting .Now since you have owned the place out right it has been on a constant slide south.Highest staff turnover in comp ,The cancerous front office,Player infractions ,Mistreatment & Sacking of club legends,Fielding incomplete Sh1T teams at start of seasons,Salary cap rorting...The list goes on.
F O P.

This is the problem that was completely self inflicted when the Leagues Club was made redundant in an effort to get 1 more seat on the Franchise Board 🙄

The financing of the Juniors only began a few years ago when Bozo convinced them to start a rival organisation to the existing Manly Juniors set up.

Basically every Club is in the red apart from the Broncos.

It's well documented and one wonders at how the Owners plan to have the NRL Grants and Membership Fees finance the whole of the Franchise costs

Again, all this was known in 2002 and both the failed GC Titans and Knights models underwrote the risk of single ownership 😎

Wonder who finances the GC Juniors ?
