NSW U20's success and what the NRL side need to do

Pittwater Legend

We brought back Geoff Toovey!
Having a look at the NSW U20's side over the last 5 years reveals a surprising level of success and provides an interesting back story to some of the most promising young players in the game for NSW. In the U20's, I believe NSW and QLD are on a level playing field when it comes to winning because both teams have to draw their players from a wider number of clubs. This is unlike the NRL where you see most of the Queensland side picked from 3 teams (Melbourne, Brisbane and NQ). Because of this, there is more familiarity within the Queensland side and this gives them a winning edge. Meanwhile, NSW have to pick their players from all over the shop and they end up playing as a team of individuals. When you play like this, you are always likely to choke against a side that plays as a team. NSW have been playing as individuals for the most part since 2006.

Now back to the NSW U20's. Despite being on a level playing field with the QLD U20's, these guys have won 5 years in a row. When you look deeper into the results, it gets even better because apart from 2012, they have smashed QLD by 13 + in every other year.

Here are some interesting notes

- Clint Gutherson, Dylan Walker and Jake Trbojevic all played in 2013 to smash QLD, 36-12
- Gutho and Jake returned in 2014 to torment QLD again, 30-8
- Brian Kelly matched Gutho and Jake by appearing twice, in the 2015 and 2016 sides on the wing. In 2015, he scored 4 tries as NSW pummelled QLD, 32-16. There were no tries for Brian in 2016 but he did kick 6 goals as the score line nearly repeated itself in 2016, 36-22

There are other NSW U20 players within the last 5 years who have kicked on as well. You have the likes of Kane Evans, Boyd Cordiner, David Klemmer, Shannon Boyd, Jack Bird, Adam Elliott and Latrell Mitchell.

If NSW want to beat QLD, they have to bond and tap into playing as a team. QLD will keep owning NSW at NRL level if NSW don't take Origin seriously and the players don't become more familiar with each other well before Origin rolls around. A short camp just before the series will do **** all because QLD have become too familiar with winning and know all the tricks to win.

At this point in time, NSW definitely have the cattle to take on QLD but they need to develop a winning mentality. They need to get rid of the older players who have become accustomed to losing (Pearce, Dugan, Hayne and Ferguson) and organise some of the promising younger guys to socialise and train together outside of club football. Play touch footy together or talk footy regularly but they've got to do something. NSW would have a phenomenal backline if Tommy T, Latrell, Gutho, Walker and Bird are all fit and in sync. Get a sensible half to feed these guys and they would carve. Complement them with a set of forwards who are willing to put their bodies on the line for the entire series and you will have a winning side. Injuries aside, building a forward pack for the next few series should become easier because I believe you can bank on Cordiner, Klemmer and Jake doing the job required. Woods goes very well when he is switched on and Frizell is somewhat reliable. Someone needs to motivate Fifita because he runs sideways too much when he is not feeling it. If the likes of Evans and Boyd are fit then they could be in the mix as well. Nathan Brown from the Eels is also having a great season and should definitely be in the mix if his current form remains next season.

Plenty of potential for NSW but I just hope that the next coach realises that the fundamental value of playing as a team trumps any other aspect of winning a match.

Your sensible halfback is already here, Nathan Cleary. This kid is the closest thing we are going to get to Cooper Cronk in game managment. Cleary is also the NRLs best goal kicker, and has one of the best running games out of the NRLs halves. Only 19. We just need to find a running 5/8 to play alongside him. Spine for NSW in the future will be key. You can lock in Cleary as your halfback, Fullback will be between Tedesco and Trbojevic with the added bonus of picking both in the side as Tom could be your Inglis type player and play centre or wing. 5/8 and Hooker have no real standouts at the moment. Dark horse for Hooker could be Koroisau but no one else really there. As for 5/8 you need to find a running 6 who runs the ball and has somewhat of a decent kicking game, down the track if Connor Watson can play some good footy hed be my tip. Moylan would also be option due to his club combo with Cleary. Pack will dominate QLDs for years with the likes of Jake Trbojevic, Klemmer, Cordner and some young guns there. Backline is where I think NSW could really dominate with the young guns coming through. Dark horses down the track would be Addo-Carr, Cotric and Kelly to name a few but the current crop is very solid. As for coach not Fitzgibbon, I think he would be a safe option. Johns and Fittler are the go, both have an idea about bringing young talent into the Rugby League world with their fiji trips, freddy coaches city and under 16s. And both are respected.

I made a blue. NSW have actually won 6 years in a row. 5 of those years have seen victories of 13+ (2013 to 2017).

NSW have to tap into this success and they also have to overcome Melbourne. This is mostly where QLD's success has stemmed from, because of a few well coached greats as well as stock players who are able to fill in seamlessly. As long as Craig Bellamy keeps getting players from QLD feeder clubs, NSW will be up against a harder challenge

All great input until woods the myth was mentioned. Running half hearted, turning your back and flopping on defenders isn't state of origin material.
Guys, I think it's simple....
We are coached defensively weak and for as long as I can remember we hold, then slide with their attack.
Proof is the amount of times our edge to wingers are turned inside out as we are back peddling.
This gives the attackers time to
fend off defenders or strighten the attack popping inside balls.
Both tries second origin game happened this way.
How do we fix it ??
Simple. ..
Be 2 metres offside all game and take the defence to qld limiting their options.
Put simply MOVE UP. Don't hold.

Gutherson/Cleary could be a nice halves pairing in the future
You could be onto something there, but I think Gutho would have to be playing 5/8 at club level for that to happen and that seems unlikely at the moment with Norman and Moses in the halves

This is nsw origin remember? Best to pick players out of position.
True. I forgot Gutho has played fullback therefore qualifies for any backline position at Origin level.

Our origin backline for next year

Teddy
Turbo
Duges
Hayne
Hoppa
Moylan
Gutho

Probably should pick a bit of a utility back who can cover fullback in case of injury so thinking Cody Walker on bench

Woods was great in games 1 and 2. Woeful in game 3. It was the same story for Josh Jackson. Like I said, when he is switched on, he can make valuable contributions.

That's the danger when you go up to Queensland for a decider. You can lose your mojo and that is exactly what happened with the NSW forward pack.

The ball is in his court but Hastings could potentially became a contender for the halves in years to come. He has also represented NSW U20's in a winning side

I picked up in Pittwater Legends excellent original post that Kelly was/is a goal kicker.
Does anyone know if he is good enough to become a reliable first grade goal kicker?

Best NSW backline would be:

Tedesco
Turbo
Walker
Dugan
Mansour
Moylan (although after last night maybe Sezer)
Cleary

In a couple of years I expect Gutherson and maybe Kelly will find their way in to that backline too.

I think that will be the backline but I think Tom Trbojevic will be fullback as soon as Tedesco plays poorly again, Trbojevic is leading Tedesco in most stats this year except tackle breaks. Tom has a better Passing game and support game compared to Tedesco and also has quicker acceleration to get through gaps and runs lines better. Tom will be one the wing for certain but possibly fullback instead.

Tom has a better passing game ??? Have you not been watching his efforts this season ? Tom has many good aspects to his game and he is a gun, but passing isn't his strong suit. No doubt that will improve with experience.

Tom has 9 try assists and 9 line break assists. I think youve been watching a different player because Tom is one of the best ball playing fullbacks going around and will only get better. I dont think anyone has a better cut out pass barring DCE and Boyd.

Very close for me but put Tom in centre for Dugan and Addo-Carr on the wing for some much needed speed. Holmes and Gagai leave our edges for dead in outright speed

Hoppa? As in Albert? Too late for John and William, and Jamil is a forward. Albert played well in the NSW u/16's and looks to have a promising career if uninterrupted, but I would expect Mansour and Ado Carr to be ahead of the rest at this stage : )

Could Kimmorley be any more biased against Manly in commentry if he tried.
