NRL players refuse to return to training on May 4 if pay agreement isn't reached

One of my neighbours turned 70 today , she couldn’t have a birthday party but 6 of us ( immediate neighbours ) sat at the corner , middle and opposite corner of her front lawn and sang her happy birthday.

We brought our own coffee’s around and stayed for a quick chat.

The other 6 people are died in the wool AFL fans and boy didn’t they give it to the NRL, the players and me for supporting a sport that had a bunch of drop kicks as their representatives.

It was in reality pretty harsh , and I came away feeling a bit peeved with them for being so outspoken BUT after sitting down for a while and thinking about it I realised the irreparable harm this could have done to the game of these non fans are thinking this way.

I truly think the NRL did the wrong thing by not penalising them much more harshly.
The diehard AFL fans I've spoken to are jealous of the NRLs front foot efforts to get the competition back underway. It was surprising considering they've never expressed anything but contempt for NRL previously. As far as the fines go I think they're about right, a $20,000 fine to someone on $1M is equivalent to $1000 to someone on $50k. I would've liked to see them miss a match, to send a message to other players.

Mate, I'm from Adelaide ... a diehard AFL city. The general feeling here is that the NRL are pushing up a rope trying to get the competition re-started by 28 May. There has been no jealousy, just a lot of laughter about how silly they are trying to get things going so soon.

And that's before anyone has an opinion on the players, not helped by the actions of those earlier this week.

All of us may not have 100% clarity on a range of things, but it's not as though we are staring at a black box of what the coming months could entail.
If the questions, are things like; will I see my family, will I be forced to live in a concentration camp style accommodation, what is the risk to me and my family?
A doctor friend had all these questions but went and worked in the CoVid clinic anyway. And yes, she has moved away from her family to ensure their safety.

Every NRL players needs to be on their guard. The media are out everywhere trying to catch NRL players breaking the virus rules. They are trawling social media and I would guess they have photographers fishing in the right places. Gotcha! is what they want for clicks.

Oh yeah those scumbag journos they love those photos and players ****ing up, honestly I’ve never seen anything like the way Chan 9 & Fox try to devour the very product that need to survive.

Media 101. Create a crisis. The NRL or a club reacts by bringing in a rule. Media tries to catch player breaking the rule. Challenge the game's bosses and sponsors as to how they can support this breaking of rules. Create a crisis. Each of these stages feeds thousands of clicks over months and weeks. All invented.

In this case the NRL has of course to bring in rules for managing the game during the virus. The media will take those rules and try to catch any player who gives even the appearance of breaking any one of those rules and make a crisis. But when that happens this time, it will bring down the NRL season with it and possibly irreparably damage rugby league's reputation and image so bad it can never recover.

The media won't be too concerned with that outcome as they can then start reporting on an expanded AFL, RU and soccer. Looking at the reporters twitter handles and tweets, most are not NRL fans. its just that the RU & soccer media jobs are so few and the AFL media jobs were all already filled.
Conspiracy theory 101 - the media is out to get you!
Look it is well established that journalistic professional standards are at a low ebb. Nevertheless the fact remains that certain restrictions are in place to protect everyone from serious health dangers.
And footy is basically saying let us be exempt from those restrictions, we promise we won't put you (or our players) in any danger.
So if players show signs they can't or won't comply with their 'biosecurity' measures, whatever the dickens those turn out to be, then that is legitimately newsworthy.

Really can not see why there should be too much more of a delay in giving the O K or approval from the relevant government departments to allow the Warriors entry into Australia and which is apparently one of the few remaining impediments for rebooting the R L comp . There have been numerous charter flights from various overseas countries returning mainly Australian citizens from overseas locations over the past few weeks . Admittedly more compassionate grounds for those specific charter flights but still some type of a precedent that should logically give the Warriors entry the same consideration . Just seems to be some superficial public resistance from some political figures to give the impression of not favoring some R L requests and for political sensitivities . Should not take so long to make a call on such a matter , particularly when the proposition has been in the public domain for quite some time now and integral for the comp to restart .

Screw the greedy players. Fair enough, they need to be cautious.
But, my work has suffered a lot. I am lucky, I work fulltime and now only get paid for 4 days. Others are getting 3 days pay. We are doing it because we want the place to survive and come out the other side. This was before the JobKeeper scheme.
The pinhead players must realise that if they screw this up, renegotiated TV agreements going forward will hamper the size of the salary cap. I just hope the NRL increase the base rate for players in an effort to bring the top dogs down a notch.

I agree in terms of if they are dumb enough to “ Tik Tok” ( whatever that actually is) but I do object to grubby journos following them around with cameras.

Not a good definition of a journalist: someone who follows someone around with a camera. The person you describe is a scumbag. Not a journalist. Then again, the 'person' who followed Rugby League's own Three Stooges around was either themselves or a family friend.
Good journalists have been responsible to real illumination and change for the better in our society over the years. They really shouldn't be tarred with the Murdoch Mediocrity Paparazzi Brush.

Hi Budgie ... from memory reports said it was Ado Carr that posted the stuff ...

I should have referenced the photo taken yesterday of Boyd / Bird here in Brisbane , followed by a News Ltd journo for the Courier Mail.
