DSM5 - 95 and League was in a great place. SuperLeague weakened the game and gave Super Rugby and AFL the niche they needed to establish themselves. It also took all the focus off the game in the bush and the dollars out of there in order to shore up the 20 clubs. A lot of people shifted from the game and they have never returned. It isn't the only factor of the decline but it is a big one.
Don't suggest that I would agree with Tony Abbott on anything - Mr 'People Skills' is the Liberal version of Mark Latham.
As for the Northern Eagles, I went to one game at Parra Stadium when there were free tickets, just to support Beaver and lost total interest in the game. I did not return until Manly were Manly. The less said about those dark years the better. It was not Manly and I hated it.
From a dominant 20 team comp League all went backwards. You are welcome to your view re what Manly should have done but my moral compass is glad we didn't sell out for 30 pieces of silver.
