What is this obsession with "tall wingers that can defuse bombs"?

Sure, being tall helps but there's so many other things they need in their arsenal.

Give me a Robbo over a Fergo any day.

JAC, Nofoaluma, Katoa aren't what you'd call tall, but I'd like to see how many they'd had scored against them from kicks?

Agree, but you do need at least 1 tall. That keeps oppositions bombing only 1 side, which makes it easier to defend. It also gives our halves a genuine option in attack

I agree funa left wing but Parker might be ousted by Harper who is a much better player. If Des plays walker at left center then Bradley will miss out and harper who is taking sulis spot atm is a right center. Nah mean

I really like Parker, he gives 100% and is a Manly junior, but I agree Harper has the edge

Ok Simon. I've got a fair amount of respect for your opinions, but George Jennings ? How much would he be paying us to let him play ? You lost me here. I think I'd rather Horhay than GJ.

HAHA. Thought he went well for the warriors this year. Was safe under the high ball, pretty strong carries. Not slow. Tafua?? Nah, he is past it now, too much of a liability. I was really hoping Hoppa Jr would own one spot next year, little underwhelmed by his performances so far. I know needs match fitness, but he seems like a long way off. Maybe a really good off season and we can see the best of him, obviously that would be ideal. At least the kid is still young and growing and only just starting his NRL journey so we haven't seen the best of him.

I like Jennings too. I mentioned in another thread he has scored 33 tries in 62 games, he is strong and a quality finisher. Definitely an upgrade on Jorge, Garrick and Hoppa and would be reasonably cheap

Agree, good point. If you were just tall and lacked the rest of the attributes which make a good winger like strong kick returns, speed, finishing tries etc then you wouldn't be considered a specialist winger. Was just stating he is tall and athletic which is a good attribute to have as you can be a target for attacking kicks and hopefully will not be out jumped like Jorge was on so many occasions this year and last. I think a good winger needs a strong kick return to get the side going and over the advantage line and have speed to finish off a try scoring movement or defend a try, especially since manly adopt a sliding defense. Such an important position.

I know Reuben Garrick gets a bad wrap on here, especially for his defence. And I get that, his defence does kinda suck. Occasionally he can be good, that can't be denied and only would be by those who refuse to see it. But yes for the most part his defence shows why he is a winger and not in the middle tackling like Jake.

However.....however.....

I also think that a lot of it stems from our up and in style of defence and its something every single one of those who play wing for us including Garrick, Jorge, Funa, Hopoate, Miski and even Parker at times, suffer from. Up and in has a tendency to leave huge gaps out wide that unfortunately exploits the lack of pace in our outside backs. If we actually used a sliding defence, those gaps could be shut down before they even exist.

I'm not completely sold on the idea of getting rid of Garrick for Saab. I think Reubs could be seen as a lot better if we started to use a sliding instead of up and in defence. And I think people wouldn't be against him so much if we exploited his pace out wide a lot more than we currently do. It worked for the try he scored against the Warriors, but that type of play from us was a rare thing in 2020.

As for his goal kicking ... unfortunately we have struggled on that front since the day Matthew Ridge's contract ended. Other than the one year we had Ben Walker, and occasionally with Killer, we have struggled to find a consistently good kicker for the past 25 years. Reubs isn't the best kicker, even I will acknowledge that. He's nowhere near being up with the best, let along being the best. But as far as first grade kickers at Manly go he's actually the best we've got right now.

If Reubs is at Manly in 2021 I'd still fully expect to see him in the #5 jumper over anyone else we currently have in the squad.

Good point with the defensive structure it needs a complete overhaul.

One part of Garrick’s game that needs work is his kick returns, he gets too vertical with a stop and a jink running style just before the defensive tacklers are close to him, he gets turned and driven a lot, this leads to slower play the balls and the defensive team getting momentum without the ball.

I watched him closely this year and Garrick was disappointing on what he achieved in 2019.

George Jennings? Or that guy at the tigers who cant make 1st grade? George maybe not the other guy.. 33 tries in 62 games is decent but he's a winger. How many he let in? I haven't seen him choosen all season unless im mistaken. Id prefer hoppa Garrick and Saab.

Mate of course! I remember them all. I reckon I’ve watched each ep like 5-10times sone more!. Each character was brilliant in their own way but yes George probs takes it as the best main. Frank also a class act may he RIP. Kramer always a quality moment. So many fav eps. Devola/clown is up there for me. So many great characters,

Argh crap, not George Jennings! Robert Jennings. Can't get a run at tigers as they have Tommy Talau and Nofoaluma and chasing JAC. He is an upgrade on Garrick and Tafua and told to look for new team in 2021

No way Biff. Robert Jennings is an upgrade on Garrick and Tafua. Cannot get a run cause they also have two gun wingers and chasing JAC.
