Reilly ban a personal vendetta, lawyer says
28 Aug 12 @ 12:20am by Jon Geddes
BOB Reilly's barrister says his client has been the victim of a personal vendetta as part of a power-play for control of the Sea Eagles.
Christopher Branson QC said he will release a detailed response to allegations made against Mr Reilly regarding his expenses while on the Manly Leagues Club board in the next few days.
Yesterday Mr Branson was completing a detailed written response following the report compiled by the club auditors.
"These issues in the auditors report go back several years to 2009 and there are quite a lot of transactions in various categories," Mr Branson said.
"It is most regrettable it is now out in the public domain. This unfortunately goes back to the dirty politics behind who wants to get control of the Sea Eagles.
"And that is the context in which this arises.
"It has become a vendetta against Mr Reilly personally, notwithstanding that he has devoted hundreds and hundreds of hours to the business of the leagues club which over many years has had it's own financial problems."
He said Mr Reilly was chairman of the district football club and was deputy chairman of the Sea Eagles.
Mr Branson said every 90 days expenses had to be audited and all Mr Reilly's expenses had previously been signed off without any issues.

Sea Eagles: Club under siege
28 Aug 12 @ 12:25am by Jon Geddes
MANLY Leagues Club chairman David Costello has broken his silence about the dramas surrounding his board, saying "there are still some issues to be explored".
Sea Eagles legend Cliff Lyons and former Labor Senator Kerry Sibraa both resigned their board positions last week.
And it has been revealed that former board member Bob Reilly has been banned from entering the leagues club.
"We have been following a very tight process over the past couple of months and there are still some issues the board will continue to investigate," Mr Costello told the Manly Daily.
He said some months ago the leagues club board had become concerned about the way the club was operating so an internal investigation was undertaken.
"As a result of that the board has unanimously decided to ask our auditors to do a review of all of the information," Mr Costello said.
"As a result of that report to the board, the board unanimously decided to cite Mr Reilly to appear before the board to answer a charge of conduct prejudicial."
Mr Costello said that 48 hours before that hearing was to take place Mr Reilly resigned his membership of the club.
"At that following board meeting the club decided to exclude Mr Reilly from entering the club as a visitor, a guest of a member or an honorary member into the future," Mr Costello said.
Lyons said he had stepped down because he was too busy with his football commitments to devote the time necessary to be a board member.
In a letter to the board, Mr Sibraa wrote: "I believe it is time to step aside and allow someone else to serve on this Board.
"In a report to the Board in July, the chairman put forward a proposal for a review of the club's constitution.
"This is not a board discussion I would wish to be involved in."
