We cannot afford anyone besides geriatric middles, because of Jake and Tom's contracts that have not paid off. We will be too slow there until 2027.

In all fairness to Jake, I don't blame him. The rules changed against his game immediately after he re-signed, and it's the failure of the club to make our flagship middle a defensive middle... When we have no true attacking middles aside from Bullemor and Paseka.

Anyone blaming DCE today is kidding themselves. He went to headless chook mode because not a single piston was firing anywhere else. Backline players were good, although Faulalo is not a first grader. Remember the people saying we should flog off Garrick to keep Faulalo? Where are they now? Our backline is not our problem, although TT2 would be better.

We need to prioritise Navale, Bullemor and Paseka. Most of the other middles are too slow or past their prime. I do like Taukeiaho but he is not lasting the year.
I agree they didn’t lose today because of DCE it was in the middle of the field where they were dominated.

Problem is there is no middlemen worth bringing into first grade that is in the 30 man squad, the cupboard is bare and a couple of the train and trial players look more likely than a few of the players in the 30 man squad.

TKO played 50 minutes today and that was 20 minutes too much for me.

Could be time for England to be calling and move a couple of the players in the 30 man squad on that don’t look likely and upgrade a couple train and trial players.

No no no no....all we ever talk about is how good a person is on the back of their attack. I would swap 2 fleet footed wingers and centres for people who can read defence and tackle. We must just find a way to stop teams scoring more than 20 every week. They're the teams that wins comps.
We need to break contracts and offload a bunch of forwards if we are ever going to win a comp and we need to do it this year because we currently have a great set of backs. I’m sure we work on defence and are as fit as any club but ageing 100kg forwards don’t and can’t cut it anymore.

Injuries:

Manly winger Jason Saab is in doubt for next week's clash with Cronulla after he limped from the field late in Sunday's loss to Melbourne.

Coach Anthony Seibold is optimistic the injury is not serious but fears
Saab will miss the trip to Perth.

"Saaby's got a high-ankle sprain," Seibold said. "They're telling me it's minor. I don't know whether he'll be available this week, which will be disappointing for us and Saaby because he's had a good start to the season.

You mean like the coach !!! Sorry but Seibold has never displayed a coaching philosophy of defense 1st. We are hideous once again.
Too busy focussing on new age psycho babble which may earn you some brownie points in the corporate world but which mean squat in professional sport, especially rugby league. Those offseason retreats with breakout groups and PowerPoint lists set off warning bells for me. I’m pretty sure the dogs spent the offseason sweating their arses off in defensive drills while our guys had breakout sessions to discuss their top 5 ways to overcome adversity, for presentation to the group.

Clearly todays Game Plan was ineffectual
Need to regroup and ensure the plan next week gets a must needed win
We need a better defensive real time reaction than what was witnessed today
Just seemed that nobody gave a sh&t when they attacked and scores
Easy areas to address, hoping Seibs sees it

Great weather, great crowd and atmosphere at Brookie today - shame about the result. Koula, Haumole, Lehi and (in the 1st half) Burbo our best.

Finally a journo asked a decent question in the presser and we now know Croker and Talau hopefully back in round 7 vs Dragons and Lodge eligible in round 11.
Good to get back Talau, Croker not sure. Simpkin has been great, between Jazz and Croker for the bench spot.

Seibold is obviously no dummy, so this is no cheap shot ‘I know more than a professional coach’ rant, rather, a serious question…has he backed the wrong horse?

I recall a game against Penrith at Brookie in Seibs first year as coach. We had injuries aplenty and were given no chance. We went out and threw caution to wind, shifting the ball from inside our half regularly, and pulling the trigger on low % plays. We jagged a few tries and Penrith looked uncomfortable for a little while, before going on to win well.

In the press conference after the game, Seibs said words to the effect of having to disrupt Penrith and play to our strengths, etc. It seems our game plan moving forward from that day, has been all out attack.

I gather, from other things Seibs has said during press conferences and pre-season feature pieces, is that our strategy is born from a combination of (a) a quicker game means momentum and more points scored and (b) we’ve got attacking weapons.

It’s almost like he has attempted to revolutionise an approach to the game that is very much like Rugby Union; one where the defence is scattered from the fatigue of repeat sets, and Manly are ready to strike.

The trouble is, we’ve still got to have a defensive mindset and do all the fundamentals well. Sadly, we don’t. When Seibs arrived, it should have been about effort, effort, effort, defend, defend, defend, and when the opposition get tired, our speed and simple attacking structures will bear fruit.

I'm feeling more circumspect about the whole thing now, but the simple fact of the matter is we need to be way better than that if we want to make the top 4 this year.
Unfortunately we haven't got much better in us. We can beat easy teams but when a decent time comes along, normal service resumes......

First time we’ve played an actual good team this year and sure enough we got rolled.

Finding it pretty hard to support the team this year with the clown show coming from the captain but I do at least enjoy watching the likes of Haumole, Lehi and Koula who were our best 3 players yesterday. D$E leaving is a start but I think we’ll have to wait another year for Tom & Jake to take pay cuts before we can build a decent roster again.

Interesting reading we can’t play Lodge/Navale because they aren’t on top 30 deals, but Joey Walsh who is still only playing Flegg and apparently 2 years away from being ready is? James and Matterson in there too and I doubt we’ll see them in first grade this year. A lot said about our poor roster management but little things like this add up especially with the injuries we have.

I like how few responses and chatter there is on this post game thread, it's so quiet, I think we are all feeling the same thing and can't be bothered to even talk about it.

What is there to say? We were awful and the end score absolutely flattered us. The Storm pulled our pants down, bent us over and bitch slapped us repeatedly in front of a big home crowd and huge TV audience. End of story. Time to move onto to next week. If anyone has watched the TV show Severed well I wish I had watched that game on the Severed floor ...... maybe next weeks game too.

Ive had time to digest yesterdays game and what really stood out so much is the speed in which the Storm play, their attack and defence are relentless and Manly were totally gassed.

Our pack is bigger in size than theirs and is no where near as athletic or mobile, we really need to address weaknesses we have, we got smashed around the ruck, our defence was quite passive and the fundamental errors such as playing the ball correctly cost us dearly.

The resilience was found wanting twice in the game, giving up 3 tries in 5 minutes twice is not the form of a title challenger.

I feared for the team yesterday. I was worried as to how together they were are the saga that is still going on about our captain. The dysfunction I hoped was gone is back in spades and this festering sore is really hurting the club.

I accept and I am happy for DCE to move on, that is his right and I respect what hes achieved for the club. DCE I think totally knows what he is doing and he and Mestrov or whoever is involved in this saga need to look at the bigger picture and understand that this is now biting the club and it needs to end!!

The positive today was our reserve grade team who had a big win, steered around by Jacob Arthur who does a good job in organizing the team. We need a back up solution for this season.

Hugely disappointing performance, huge reality check for the whole team, getting schooled like that and knowing that the Drizzle put the cue in the rack with 15 to go.

Our best periods were the last 15 minutes of each half, the team did not give up which is a positive and the start of each half was pathetic!!

Lots of work now to do, 6 day turn around travelling to the other side of the planet then backing that up 5 days later on a Thursday night, well done NRL scheduling!
